lol I was scrolling through the list rolling my eyes and then BOOM, 40 year Old Virgin, love it. I need to circle back around to this tomorrow and comment more. The absence of The Dark Knight bothers me. This list is incredibly pretentious, even for me as a film school dropout.

They tried to bring it down to earth with The 40-Year-Old Virgin, but it just sticks out like a sore thumb.

I've seen 3 in full and half of inside out. I obviously don't get out to the movies too much!

I've seen 3. I agree Mad Max: Fury Road is amazing. It felt like they were going for 1 from each category but didn't give action films much thought.
If they were trying to find the best comedy, I don't think 40 year old virgin is the one. I would put Bridesmaids up there.

I've seen 5. I didn't think Boyhood was amazing. The concept was cool but the kid couldn't act as he got older and so it got worse and worse.

I have seen 2. I was expecting more of the everymans list and less of the pretentious. I guess I was looking for like cult classics.
I did really like Inside Out, and I have watched The Hurt Locker Twice and would again. Don't know if there are any others on the list that I will get around to. I am not much of a movie person.

I'm not sure I've ever heard of more than 5 of those. Inside Out is the only one I've seen.

Munich is good but not too 25 great. Boyhood is like The Artist in that it's more gimmick than substance. I wish Inglorious Basterds, the Dark Knight, and Pan's Labyrinth were listed or at least honorable mentions Eternal Sunshine is a masterpiece. Most of the "special effects" are old school camera tricks and not CGI. It's just so beautifully written and well acted. And Inside Out is defintiely the best of the Disney/Pixar films. Here's a recent-ish list of 100 films from the BBC for comparison: www.bbc.com/culture/story/20160819-the-21st-centurys-100-greatest-films

It's beautiful, no doubt, but the violence is intense. I've seen 15 on that list. Huzzah!

I've seen 12. I like lots of the list- eternal sunshine is one of my favorite movies. I would've chosen No Country for Old Men over Munich, though.
I'm a little surprised that no Wes Anderson or Tarantino movies made the list. I loved Royal Tenenbaums, Moonrise Kingdom and Grand Budapest so much.

2. That's... sad The 2 I've seen are the most low brow ones on the list, so inside out and 40yo Virgin

I've seen 10:
There Will Be Blood Spirited Away Inside Out Boyhood The Hurt Locker Inside Llewyn Davis Mad Max: Fury Road Moonlight Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind The 40-Year-Old Virgin
I'm surprised by how many films on this list I've never heard of, but I'm not going to call it overly pretentious without actually having seen the films. Because maybe they are the best ones, you know?
Of the ones I've seen, the only one I'd quibble with is Boyhood. It's an amazing concept and an impressive achievement, but it was not a particularly compelling watch for me beyond the novelty of getting to see the kids' physical transformations as they grew up.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is one of my favorite movies of all time. It's funny, sweet, romantic, heartbreaking, incredibly creative and visually beautiful. I just love it. Charlie Kaufman (the scriptwriter) is a weirdo genius, as long as his scripts are directed by someone else who can rein him in and keep him from disappearing up his own asshole (looking at you, Synecdoche, New York).
Seeing Inside Llewyn Davis on this list made me want to watch the Please Mr. Kennedy song again and turns out it's still hilarious.
MH and I do "Outer. SPACE!" all the time.

The list read as if someone just graduated from film school and wanted to create an article/list that shows how woke he is to cinema.
I've seen 11 on the list and most of them I would not say were even the best in their category, let alone top 25 of all time.
I'm glad I finished reading the eye-roll inducing list, because the random placement of 40 year old Virgin made me legit laugh out loud. I was not expecting them to swerve like that.

2. I've not heard of half of these movies.
I'm ok with that - 95% of the movies that I see are for the sole purpose of entertainment and escape, with the occasional historical film. We should make our own list.

This list is definitely more realistic. I dont agree with everything, but I'm glad a few of the ones I was thinking would be Top 25 on the other list showed up here: Requiem for a Dream The Royal Tenenbaums over the Grand Budapest Hotel for me, but Wes Anderson in general deserves to make any 21st century list. He's created an entire genre all by himself The Dark Knight Pan's Labyrinth Almost Famous - While not top 50 material, I agree with it's placement on the BBC list.

I saw 5 from the first list and 30 from BBC's list.
I don't know if I would necessarily call that list pretentious, because I haven't seen most of the foreign films listed, they may be really good. Film criticism etc. is such a subjective thing though, because not everyone has the same taste in films. If you only like say, action movies like The Avengers, yes, this list will look pretentious and over the top, but if you like quiet indie movies, or foreign ones, this list may be spot on. Also, it's the NYT that put it out, they aren't exactly known for being low brow. It's one of the reason I'm not a fan of "Top of" or "Best of" lists, because it 100% depends on who's creating them.

I've seen 28 from the BBC list. H is really into movies. He's probably seen more than half the list.
4 months, 3 weeks, 2 days is seriously haunting. Very TW-y. I think I purposely blocked it out. And I think Boyhood mostly makes it onto these lists because of the concept, but the actual movie was kinda.....boring.

I haven't seen most of the movies on the list. I will say that I do love Miyazaki films, so Spirited Away makes sense to me. One of my favorite movies is Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, but I always thought it would be too "weird" to be considered a "best" movie anywhere, so that is interesting. I saw Inside Out and didn't particularly like it.

I like the BBC's list. I've seen 43 of those. I did notice that many of the NYT films were also on the BBC list. I think the BBC list probably seems more accessible because it's longer, so it contains more widely-seen films amidst the artsy ones.
I'd forgotten about Mulholland Drive, and I'm surprised no one mentioned it on the NYT list. And I was glad to see Lost in Translation, Only Lovers Left Alive, Amelie, Let the Right One In, Almost Famous, Inception, Memento, No Country for Old Men, and several Wes Anderson films get some love. (Yikes, that list turned out long!)
