What pump do I want this go around? I'm partial to my PISA and that's what I used last time. Since these babies are three years+ apart I get another pump free through insurance. Should I switch it up or stick with the PISA? I was thinking maybe the Freestyle because I liked some of the features like the timer but it doesn't seem that different to me. Opinions?

I've heard that while the portability is nice, the Freestyle doesn't work as well for some moms as the PISA.
I have a PISA and a Spectra S2. The PISA was my work pump and the Spectra was my back-up at home. I also get another pump this pregnancy and I was thinking of getting another PISA. I hear a lot of moms seriously prefer the Spectra over the PISA but I really didn't have any complaints about the PISA. Most of my bottles are Medela and I already have a bunch of spare parts so it makes sense to keep the PISA as my main pump. I'll keep the Spectra as back-up at home again, and my original PISA in case something happens to the new one I bring to work.

Hi poppy!!! I've wondered how you were doing as we haven't seen you in a long time! I hope all is well! I'm glad to see your name pop up π I'm sorry I don't really have any advice, just wanted to say hi! Hopefully someone can chime on the two models your considering. I also used the PISA, but I never responded very well to the pump. I didn't pump very often so that may be why, or maybe it was that particular pump, who knows!

I've heard good things about the Spectra S2 and if my insurance covers it, I'd like to try that one this time.

If you want portable, the Spectra S1 has a built-in battery pack and I have heard the suction is better than the freestyle, which does not work as well as the PISA. I had a PISA last time around and really liked it, and assuming I'm eligible for another pump (might have to wait until DD is 3, which will be a month after birth), I'm getting a Spectra S2 for pumping at work and will use the PISA as my home/backup pump. A lot of people in my BF support group really love the Spectra. Parts are more difficult to get (stores don't really carry them), so that's a consideration. I would not recommend an Ameda Purely Yours over the PISA, I was given one by a friend and used it as my home/backup pump but the controls are not as easy as the medela and the suction is less comfortable.

I'm under a new insurance since my husband switched jobs so I'm guessing I qualify for a new pump even though DD is not even going to be two when this baby will be born. I'm staying home for at least a year so I won't have to pump much, so I'm not sure if I should even get a new pump. I responded horribly to the pump with DD and could only get maybe an ounce or two at a time so I don't think I will pump much unless I absolutely have to. Should I get a new/different pump anyways?

brenna I've pretty much got the same situation going on as you - new insurance, SAH, didn't pump much with DS, didn't respond well when I did. The way I see it, if your insurance covers it you might as well get a new one.

Should I get a new/different pump anyways? if you didn't respond to your first pump, could be worth getting a different one to try out. But there are also people who SAH and don't ever pump and do just fine. That said, a pump can be useful for helping to clear clogs or if baby goes on a nursing strike to prevent clogs/mastitis. I believe most insurance will cover a pump within the first year, so if you decide you want to get one later on, you can just order one at a later date.

I just checked my insurance site and will be contacted with my options on the next few days. If they offer the Spectra maybe I'll try that one to see if I respond any better.

I'm the very worst and haven't posted here in months. I'm totally that person right now coming along to ask a question. My first two BMB's we v v active and I was having a hard time keeping engaged. I mainly hand out in the blinds thread and chase the three-year-old around.

I'm leaning towards another PISA probably for ease of having all the same parts. I'll have two so ideally I could leave my new pump at work in my office and then just take "the insides" home and pull the cooler and bottles out. THAT would be way more convenient. Oh but not really because I still have to clean everything. I feel so rusty you guys. I will probably still have to take the whole bag home huh? I hated being the bag lady every day; lunch box, purse, diaper bag oh right and the baby. Now all that plus a toddler too. Lloyd help me.

Last time around, I had two sets of flanges that I just kept in my desk with my pump and I brought a bottle brush to work and would just wash them at the end of the day in the office kitchenette sink. And they make steam bags if you want to steam your parts, too (I didn't). So the only thing I brought back and forth was an insulated lunch bag with my milk in it.

I have a freestyle from DD and Iβll use it agian with this babe. I didnβt pump a ton (maybe once/day), and it worked fine for my purposes. I have no insurance, I paid out of pocket for my freestyle so Iβm not motivated to try something else.
What I do want to buy this time around is one of those things that suctions on to the other breast during nursing to collect leaking milk. Does anyone have any recess for that?

My sister has used the Hakaa pump, she got it from Amazon, and said it was good for collecting enough for an extra bottle once in a while. One thing to keep in mind, it is a pump, so if you have oversupply it will make the oversupply worse because it's technically suctioning milk out of your breast. There are also Milkies milk collectors which just sit in your bra and catch any extra leakage.

Pumping once a day would be a dream. In the early days it was four times at work. Sometimes once at home if timing or traffic didn't work out. NIGHTMARE.

There is no suction so it won't impact supply at all and even just catching letdown added up to a small bottle every so often. I bought a Haakaa last week to have for this time. I already had a Medela Manual pump but I feel like the Haakaa could be a good replacement since I always had a hard time using my manual one handed. But as Dramaphile mentioned since it uses suction it will act as "demand" on your body and could lead to oversupply if you're not careful. I have concert tickets for a week and a half after my due date. Assuming I don't go really overdue and there are no complications I'm hoping to still go. The Haakaa seems like a good way to collect enough milk for the few hours I'll be gone, then I'll just go back to being careful about its use affecting my supply.

Are the Milkies awkward? I guess you can go to the bathroom to dump them into a bottle. I don't remember having that much leaking where I thought milk was being wasted but I could be conveniently forgetting that glamorous detail.

I think most people use them while nursing the other side since you would get the most leakage that way. They would def make your boobs look weird or at least extra busty) if you walked around the office with them on and probably wouldn't collect enough to be worth it unless you leak like a faucet and are changing breast pads every hour or two.

Ohhhh that's how I was picturing people using them. Like after they were done pumping. I don't remember the other boob leaking. I think I blocked so much of this out.

I don't remember having that much leaking where I thought milk was being wasted but I could be conveniently forgetting that glamorous detail. It's pretty big. Whenever I nursed I would get a letdown from both sides at once so I used it to collect that. I didn't wear it around all day in my bra - that would have been uncomfortable and obvious something was in there. Standard leakage I just let a nursing pad catch it.

Mine never leaked while nursing the other side, so they wouldn't do much for me. Some people get a letdown when they nurse the other side and leak a bunch. I only ever leaked when I was suuuper engorged like when my baby slept through the night for the first time and I woke up soaked.

I never leaked, I never even had to wear breast pads, but that was probably because my supply sucked π hopefully this time my supply will be a little better.

I had oversupply issues and Millie's were great to catch that letdown from the other side. My son's pee called me Bessie once because I had so much milk. I had leaked through breastpads hearing ds1 cry during shots. π

I nursed right before we left for the appointment, DS sat quietly in his carrier the whole time (so no crying to trigger a let down), and I still soaked the front of the gown.

Funny enough, leaking seems to have little to do with supply. Some people with low supply still leak (so milk catchers are especially useful to them). I had oversupply when DD was a baby and was basically a cow, I would get 10 oz in my first pump session of the day and ended up donating milk because my freezer ran out of space, but almost never leaked.

I never leaked and I was always stressed about my supply (for more reasons than lack of leaking!). But I ended up nursing DS to 22-23 months, so my supply had to have been fine. I wish that I hadn't been so constantly worried about it and I'm hoping to be able to trust my body more this time around.

My insurance covers the Spectra s9+ the Medela PISA and other ones that I'm not interested in. Had anyone used the Spectra 9+? While researching it looks like there are many versions of the Spectra and I'm not sure if this version is better or worse than the Medela I already have.
Edit: I can also get the Spectra 2 but would have to pay 30 bucks because it comes with a little bag. I can't get just the pump by itself for free though π
