meggriffin - That seems like a lot of monitoring for only being high at the 1 hour mark. I always thought you had to be high at 2 of the 3 hours to need additional monitoring.

I thought so too, I have a regular OB appointment next Tuesday and I am going to ask more questions. I might push to do ever other week instead of weekly.

meggriffin that does seem like a lot of monitoring, but I suppose it's always best to be careful and thorough. I hope your OB can answer your questions and that the blood draws end up not being too bad.

I passed my 1 hr glucose screen from yesterday and whatever all other blood tests they ran came back normal as well. Yay!

chriskoo I think you’re the only one on our bmb so far with GD like me. May I ask, do the frequency of your appointments change? How often are you going in to see your OB?

I would push back on that without further confirmation. I would really struggle with working and going to the lab twice a week. Like you would have less intervention if you just assumed you have GD and went about your life under that assumption.. .

mirabelle so far the frequency of my appointments hasn’t changed. I’ll be almost 30 weeks at my next appointment and after that one I’ll be going every two weeks, which I think is pretty normal. My OB did throw in an extra ultrasound at that next appointment, and may do another closer to the end. Other than that she just looks at my sugars each time I go (I test 4x/day). If they get too high I might have to start meds but I’m hoping not. Only other change is that now I’ll be induced at 39 weeks, per my OB’s policy for GD patients.

meggriffin I agree that’s a lot of lab work! Seems easier just to diagnose GD, start the diet and test your sugars yourself at home. I thought so too, I am surprised they are keeping such a close eye on failing just the first hour. Why even do hours two and three if this is the route we are going to take.

Seriously, I have had so many people tell me to just follow a diabetic diet and refuse to go over week. Of course I would want to get checked again at some point to be sure.

How often are you going in to see your OB? mirabelle I’m sorry you’re joining the club. I was diagnosed around 20 or 21 weeks and am 29 weeks tomorrow. It’s definitely frustrating, but easy once you get the hang of it. And as a bonus, I haven’t gained any weight! My OB appointments have stayed the same, but I have regular growth scans/BPP scheduled trough the rest of pregnancy. My fasting numbers were high so I was sent to MFM to meet with the nurse, but now I just email her my numbers. There are some good Facebook groups with lots of ideas and answers to questions too.

mirabelle - Please try not to feel ashamed. There's nothing a mom can do to prevent GD if she's going to get it. It's an unfortunate side effect of some pregnancies and nothing to be ashamed of.

I hear you, I am not officially diagnosed but might as well be. It’s been two days and I am of course surrounded by people so I have to keep explaining my food choices. The hardest part is not being able to just grab for whatever, whenever. And I’m with you on being embarrassed. Yes, anyone can get GD but there are risk factors. And being overweight didn’t help my case so I tend not to tell a lot of people either. It’s a short period of time- we can do it!!

Had my first appointment today where I got my monitor and all I could think when I was getting my supplies and my healthier groceries is how the hell is a low income person supposed to manage and pay for something like this?
I was going crazy. Then there’s the extra appointments that this lady has to squeeze me in for (her words). I’ll be fine, I just noticed how expensive protein is in a lot of forms that I don’t normally consume. I am not low income I just was sticker shocked by many things in regards to time demands and the quality of food.
I think I’m miffed about the way she commented on another patient not calling when she got certain #s and I wanted to say... you know what lady, if I had more than one kid to manage right now, I probably would have a hard time calling you too.

I had my regular ob appointment and was told they are diagnosing me as glucose intolerant. I got the test strips and kit today to do it at home. I told them I just couldnt make it into the hospital and extra two times a week.
Still haven't seen the nutritionist so I have no idea if I am eating the right way or not. I just cut out most carbs and have been heavy on the protein.

meggriffin I’m sorry you’re dealing with this but I’m happy you have some clarity and don’t have to go to the lab twice a week. The nutritionist will help, but I find that mostly cutting our simple carbs (potatoes, rice, sugar, white bread, etc), but keeping complex carbs (fruit, whole grains) has been helpful in keeping everything stable. Good luck!

The nutritionist will help, but I find that mostly cutting our simple carbs (potatoes, rice, sugar, white bread, etc), but keeping complex carbs (fruit, whole grains) has been helpful in keeping everything stable. Good luck! Do you have problems with your fasting sugars at all? I was told they need to be under 90 but I have been eating like a champ the last couple of days great numbers during the day- however I wake up with my sugars around 91-99 and I was told they should be under 90. Today two hours after breakfast my blood sugar was at 85. I don’t know what I am doing wrong before bed.

Anyway, fasting numbers are the suck because there's not much you can do beyond the snack, what it is, what time you eat it, since it's your hormones controlling it.

meggriffin I can’t really compare numbers because I’m in Canada so my numbers are in metric (fasting goal is 5.3 and less), but I do find that a bedtime snack helps with the numbers. I’m not always under the goal (it’s pretty aggressive) but so far my OB is happy.

Anyway, fasting numbers are the suck because there's not much you can do beyond the snack, what it is, what time you eat it, since it's your hormones controlling it. So when you snack are you doing 15 carbs or protein for a snack? Are you eating just one item or trying to get a little carb and a little protein together. I apologize I have a lot of questions!
