I got home from 5 hours at the pool to find my 90 lb dog covered in itchy red bumps. They are all over his belly, all over his face (guess he scratched one on his nose, swelling and bleeding,) between his toes, and really bad around his lower belly/ween area.
I gave 100 mg of Benadryl in case it was hives. We have literally changed nothing, and he hasn't been away from he house in 2 weeks.
No signs of fleas, ticks, mange, or other parasites. On a limited ingredient diet bc history of funky ears that seemed better after eliminating grains. Usually never gets human food, but did snatch some pb&j from a kid yesterday.
Mouth not swollen, could be panting more than usual, but it is also warm in the house. No signs of a medical emergency, but obv itchy and uncomfortable.
Thoughts?

I just read an article about "no see um" biting flies being a pest this time of year. Do they look like this? I can't find the original article I read, but here's one from a vet's office. www.bemidjivethospital.com/blogNot known for diseases, but just itchy. Benedry should help and they should fade after a few days. Can you take a pic and talk to a vet in the morning (assuming he's doing ok and it's not an emergency, of course)

Thanks rugger. I don't think they look like that... more like huge mosquito bites. I can try to upload a pic. The Benadryl doesn't seem like it has helped.

If he ate a PBJ yesterday and has a history of grain reaction, maybe that could have contributed? Seems like a long time between consumption and reaction, but I'm no vet and don't know how fast that reaction happens in dogs.
Sounds like Benadryl was a good first move. I'd just make sure he has lots of water and keep an eye on him.
Poor guy! I hope he improves soon!

Is there xylotil in your peanut butter? I know that's bad for dogs just not sure what the symptoms are.

Sorry, was having trouble with my phone last night so mh ran an update. The bumps have gone down this morning. He still doesn't quite seem his normal self, so will probably go ahead and schedule a checkup this week. Poor guy.

In the meantime I'd give more benedryl and maybe try an oatmeal bath to soothe the skin and wash away anything he may have picked up outside.

Sorry, was traveling for the funeral all day.
Well. The hives have gone down, but he's still bright red under his arms and legs, and still itchy.
We switched him back to the hypoallergenic food and will be calling the vet tomorrow. Still on Benadryl.
Thanks for asking. Any other ideas?

You could use some hydrocortisone cream or spray to help the itching tonight. Put a t shirt on him to keep him from licking it. If this keeps happening, look into apoquel. Several friends with allergy dogs have had amazing success with it.

Hey, speaking of dog things. sak how's Phoebe doing? I didn't call the vet the day I posted because I got busy and forgot 😬. It must have been a fluke or her getting a whiff of an old scent or something though because she's been fine and it hasn't happened again. F decided to poop all over my floor this morning though, so, have no fear, we are still knee deep in good times.

It just causes sleepiness whereas Claritin actually helps the itching. Claritin regular strength NOT decongestant. And I'd rinse him with cool water. Sorry I didn't see this sooner

But doesn't get at the root of the itching And apoquel is also awesome, but extremely expensive. And more for an all-around-allergy-mess dog. Not necessarily a flare up Sorry. Vet tech creeping in. Lol

We've used apoquel for Lucy before we decided that her itchiness was mostly anxiety, possibly some seasonal allergies (she was gnawing chunks of hair off and wound up with some awful sores). Duet has really helped with her anxiety and itchiness. But the apoquel did a pretty awesome job of stopping the itchiness, even if it didn't deal with the problem.
