Has anyone here, or is anyone going to meet with genetic counselors? I just set my appointment for May 1st and am feeling very nervous. They’ll do the blood draw that day and I’ll have results within 7-10 days.
I really have no clue what to expect.

We did this with DD. It was a class we took that went over everything they screened for and why. It was 3 Trisomys if I am remembering correctly.

I would like to but have been unable to get the info from my doctor so far. Going to ask again when I go this week. Do you know if there is any limit (week-wise) to when in pregnancy you need to get it done by or if it can be done anytime? Now that I think about it, maybe that’s a silly question.

All I know is they CAN do the screening as early as 10-13 weeks. An amnio has to wait until 16 weeks. I’m not sure if there’s a time limit on it.

It’s the chance of the false positives/negatives that really freak me out. Like why even do the testing if there’s a shot it could be wrong?
On the other hand, an abnormal scan might prompt me to do further testing, which would yield more definitive results.
Idk. This is hard.

I will be in a couple weeks. I think the appointment is mostly so the counselor can explain what they’re testing for and how to interpret the results (like the results show if you have the same odds as a woman your age of the baby having Downs or the other trisomies or higher odds, not a definitive yes/no). I would rather know so we have more information about our options and being prepared. But I do know people who have gone through a rollercoaster of emotions due to a false positive. It’s a tough call.

I'm confused - you're meeting a geneticist before any screening is done?
We met a genetic counselor last pregnancy when my risk of Tri21 came back extremely high based on NT results. We talked to them and had the CVS the same day.

I think the NT scan is most accurate before 13 weeks maybe? There's definitely a window they give but I'm not sure how high it goes.

We thought about doing this, but it was too expensive. charlotte In my experience with OBs they have always said between 10 and 13 weeks. We had ours at 10w6d.

I will apparently meet with the counselor who will explain all the tests, options, outcomes, etc. and then they draw blood for the screening. The counselor is the one who calls with the results.

Interesting. Here it's the dr/OB who does the first explaining then only if you screen high risk, they move you to genetics for further information and testing.

Thanks jorkzy and notelsie. My OB’s office told me they don’t do NT scans so my only option is a screening called ClariTest. So that’s what I’ll be inquiring about this week.

I declined the screenings offered with my last pregnancy but some issues that came up in 3rd tri raised questions about genetic issues. My son ended up not having genetic abnormalities but the experience changed my mind about declining again this this time.
