We used to have a rectal thermometer that worked well until it didn't and it wasn't available anymore. So we got a forehead one plus a few others and I seriously would have 4 wildly different readings. At some point the forehead one was good enough to give me a estimate and know to give Tylenol.
Now that I have DD2 I feel I should get a rectal thermometer again. Is there one you'd recommend. I swear they're all bad

I like the Kinsa thermometer. I also like its app for tracking temps.
ETA it's not rectal, but unless you have a reason to need super accurate temp, rectal really isn't necessary. In fact, I was taught in nursing school to discourage parents from doing it at home.

We just use the rectal one that came with our baby as part of a "free gift with purchase" our hospital was running.
Honestly, in general, I don't dose based on temperature. Fever + happy baby = nothing. Fever + sad baby = drugged baby.
ETA: rectal is our last resort. DS gets ridiculously high fevers in the 105+ range which means we're calling the advice line, which means they'll ask for rectal.

Get the Vicks speed read. It takes less than 10 seconds. There is nothing worse than a squirming screaming child trying to oust the butt probe. I never trust a forehead or ear. My kids have been burning with fever and those don't show it sometimes. I second this. We just do under the arm, but it's great because it works so fast.

Love the Kinsa. The app is so useful for tracking temps, when you have meds, etc.

I used to use the rectal all the time until he was about 15 months. And then I read that was discouraged so I use the forehead one. I used to get different readings but once you get used to how to do it, it's easy.

Wrong thread, nothing to see here.
But +1 to those damn useless forehead thermometers. What a waste of money.
