I notice that if I like a pic from a celebrity then I'm more likely to get spam requests. Maybe tell them that they shouldn't click the like button. I've had afew friends whose pages were hacked with sex stuff though, so even if your kuds are careful, they could still end up seeing things they don't need to.

Also, make sure they don't use hashtags or location tags - their account will still be private but the individual post will not be. Whenever I tag a location I always get a random request within a few hours.
Following celebs also gets your sn out there for the creepers to try to follow, too.

I know it sounds silly and wtf in the age of social media, but Instagram (and Facebook, I believe - but do the kids even use it anymore??) TOU state that you must be at least 13 years of age to sign up.
Obviously it's the parents' choice whether or not to abide by this, but it's something to think about in terms of whether or not your younger kids are ready for content they might see there, etc.
Obviously even a 13 year old isn't "ready* for porn spammers but it's kind of along the same lines as PG-13 ratings, etc.

I think keeping their accounts set to private is the only way to get around it. I'm not comfortable with kids on IG for this reason and others. Yeah, they are private. So what happens is they get requests to follow from random sex spammers named cutepussyxxx, etc. They just have to deny the request but I don't like them popping up. And I haven't allowed my girls to have accounts yet but all of their friends do so I'm just in shock I guess that 8 year olds with private accounts have to deny sex requests. This is probably the most curmudgeonly I'll ever get, but TOU say you need to be 13 to start an account and that's what I stick with. What do 8yo's need social media for?

You probably shouldn't let your kids have social media that you don't know how to work yourself.

My DD has an Instagram because she really likes taking pictures and I want to give her an outlet for her creativity, but it's private and she's only allowed to follow me, DH, and her dad, and I monitor the shit out of her account. I shut it down briefly when her dad had a crazy stalker ex-girlfriend (because I didn't want the ex g/f trying to get hold of DD to get back at her dad) but other than that we've had no issues.

Following celbs always results in me getting a few random requests. There is no way I would allow my 8 year old to have IG unless I handled 100% of the requests myself. Some of the request have full on pornography as their profile pic.

We haven't had any sex spams yet. Not on mine or hers. Maybe she doesn't like pics. IDK

IG (and other social media) scares me for kids and teens. I watched a 48 hours just today about a girl who got lured to run away after meeting a 30 year old online who convinced her he loved her, etc. A 13 year old was killed by a college kid she met online who she snuck out to see.
Parents can and do talk to their kids about the dangers and how you really don't know who you're talking to but I also know that 14 year old girls don't think rationally especially when it involves getting much-wanted attention. I'm SO glad I didn't have those options at that age.

This stuff scares the crap out of me. My kid is only 6 and not aware of any of this stuff yet thanks to living in Italy (Italians are way behind on social media) but I know it is coming and I do not feel prepared.

I'm another follower of TOU so DS wouldn't have anything before the age required. But from others I've heard IG can be pretty bad.
