So I just got a call from a genetic counselor from my perinatologist's office that the bloodwork I did last week with my anatomy scan came back with an increased risk for down syndrome. It came back with a 1 in 140 risk. Normal for my age is around 1 in 1,000.
She went over our test options and I told her I would call back tomorrow after I talk to Mh...she did reitrate that it could be a false positive and both ultrasounds looked great so I'm kind of holding onto that for right now. I'm really glad I stayed home today so I wasn't at work when I got the call.

Hugs, cp3. I'm sorry you got a result you weren't hoping for. If your ultrasounds look good, I think those are considered more strongly than the blood results, so there's that to consider. 1 in 140 still means that you have a 139 in 140 chance of having a chromosomally normal baby. Let us know how it goes for you, you have my support. <3

I’m so glad you were at home when you got the call cp3. If y’all do decide to do further testing, I hope they get you in really quickly. Please try to limit your googling, great ultrasounds sounds really promising and the range of normal blood work can be insane.

And I text Mh right away and now I feel bad for dropping this on him at work. And his boss and her boss are in town so he has all these meetings and ugh.

Big hugs friend ❤️ Hold on to that good ultrasound result because it is so important and easy to forget in the anxiety. 1in 140 are still really great odds that your baby is typically developing. It’s really hard I know but just keep breathing. We are all here for you.

Hugs cp3. Like everyone else, I would hold on to the ultrasound results. What test did you take? I've heard there have been a decent amount of false positives with some of the tests. I can't remember which though. I know my BFF had a finding similar to yours and then they had her get another blood test and it was completely fine. Try not to panic too much.

She told me what the test was called but I didn't write that down. It was the second part of a screening they had me do when I had my NT ultrasound. She said we can do an amnio or another blood test, the cell free DNA test, which wouldn't say for sure but just give more of an idea if it was a false positive.

cp3, I think that's the test that gave my BFF the false positive. She didn't even do it with her second baby. She had another blood test (not sure if it was cell free) and that told her it was a false positive. She didn't have to do amnio.

When i spiraled on test results one poster somewhere deep in the interwebs said that our ability to screen has surpassed our ability to diagnose. We have SO much information that it can be hard to see the Forest for the trees. If you test people enough, there’s bound to be something to worry about. I’m not knocking the importance of the test, but i wish they were more diagnostic.

Thanks ladies. I know 1 in 140 is a great number that the baby is fine. It was just unexpected since everything else has come back fine so far.
I talked to Mh a little and we are both against the amnio because of the risk to the baby. Finding out won't change anything for us. I'm just on the fence if I want the blood test done. It would help to know if it was a false positive but then if it comes back positive it may just stress me out more.

So many ((hugs)). With DS1, we were told our risk of trisomy was 1 in 42 when average for my age was 1 in 10,000. I know it's so so so hard not to freak out, but the good u/s really do speak volumes.
Keep us updated, will be thinking of you

I think, in this case, I'd want to know as much as I can, even if the risk is that the numbers come back reinforcing the first test's results. For me, the stress would be there either way, so the only thing I'd have to gain is sanity. Whatever you choose, we stand by you and with you.

Rama I agree with everything you say and am leaning more to getting the bloodwork done. And if it does come back positive then we can plan and be more prepared if the baby does have down syndrome when she's born.

Rama I agree with everything you say and am leaning more to getting the bloodwork done. And if it does come back positive then we can plan and be more prepared if the baby does have down syndrome when she's born. I meant to include this in my initial response, but we opted against the CVS/amnio (due to the risks you mentioned) and decided to do a different blood test because we wanted to be prepared. The 2nd blood test came back low risk, so then we just had a few extra u/s to make sure baby was developing correctly.

Blood test and appt with the genetic counselor is scheduled for Friday morning. Mh is slammed at work this week so he's not sure if he can go. It can take over a week to get the results and with next week being a holiday I don't want to put off getting the test.

cp3, I hope that the blood test gives you more information. Fingers crossed that it was a false positive, especially since your ultrasounds didn't have any markers.

I personally like the extra blood test since it's less invasive and could help give a better picture (even if not as accurate). I agree with Rama, even if you know it wouldn't change anything for you for me the knowledge would help me process and plan and be ready for anything that lays ahead. No matter what we are here for you. <3
