I ❤️ Justice Kagan! The thought of her running circles around him verbally and intellectually makes me happy. I’m sure it’s annoying and exhausting for her though.

I've been in meetings and trying to find a place for our holiday party all morning. I caught a little bit of GWB. I never thought I would miss him.

This law is unbelievable. They've been trying to pass this BS since the days of the Bill 60 charter of values which was even more horrendous. There has been lots of talk about what this actually means. Do women need to remove their niqab while waiting in line at the library? While riding a bus? Do bus drivers or librarians need to enforce this law? It's so damaging and has no place in a 'free and democratic society'. They've talked about the goal being cutting back on 'protesters wearing masks' which, no. How many protestors wait in line at the library or in city hall? This will do nothing to make protests 'safer' and will only harm muslim women. I'm so sad and frustrated. It's so clearly a bunch of xenophobic and Islamophobic bullshit, no matter how they try to spin it. No one's going to ask me to take my scarf and sunglasses off in the winter when I get on a bus, so they need to fuck off with the "public safety" argument. Canadians on the whole are totally unidentifiable in February because it is cold AF and we are all bundled up so all you can see is our eyes - MAYBE - if we are not wearing sunglasses. Which we are, because the sun reflecting off of snow and ice is wicked bright. Quebec has a long history of being objectionable when it comes to religion, so none of it is surprising, but it's disappointing that it is finally law. My city is kind of weird in that half of our metro area is in Quebec and half in Ontario, and lots of people live on one side of the border but work on the other. Are women who wear a niqab or burka going to have to remove it to take the bus in Gatineau, but then put it back on when they get to Ottawa? That is how stupid this law is.

Fortunately, the law most likely won't survive a Charter challenge and will be struck down, but in the meantime it has done a lot of damage. I heard an interview yesterday with a woman who was born and raised in Canada who said it makes her feel less welcome and less Canadian, which is heartbreaking. She said it isn't that she doesn't want to be Québécoise - it's that Québéc doesn't want her to be Québécoise. That is not my Canada.

Unsurprisingly Trump said he'd give the white house a 10 on a scale of 1-10 for their Puerto Rico response.

Have we talked about the Quebecois bill to keep people using public services from wearing niqab or burqa? www.cnn.com/2017/10/19/americas/quebec-face-covering-bill/index.htmlThe Quebec premiere actually said this: ...without realizing the irony of saying we are free and democratic, but you aren't allowed to wear the clothes of your choosing, particularly as they relate to your religious beliefs. It's horrid. And if you agree, go fuck up this poll: Ugh, the responses to that poll are awful.

This has happened across Europe to varying degrees, most famously France after uproar that women wanted to wear Burkinis. In the discussion of these measures in Canada, has there been any allusion to that? Are they saying they are just following Europe where things have been effective? (I mean, what would success even look like with such a blatantly racist, useless policy?) www.theguardian.com/world/2017/mar/14/headscarves-and-muslim-veil-ban-debate-timeline

I'm watching the Warner/Klobuchar press conference and my 4 year old recognized Mark Warner. Considering he thinks all letters are "seven" I feel like this is a huge win

General Kelly is making the argument that a POTUS phone call isn't required and isn't really even helpful bc it does nothing to ease the pain of losing a loved one. He said that all presidents, to his knowledge, have written letters and some have made phone calls.
