tjanca22, I'm trying to be the responsible pet owner, and DIL. I just hoped that as another pet owner (I don't think they are necessarily responsible... lol) I just figured she'd know how hard getting one dog into a place last minute during the holidays would be, I have 3! I haven't talked to her, only DH about broaching the topic with her. But I guess your right, it is too early for most people. Dh is planning on not going up for Christmas as they don't have a place for us to sleep and 9+ hours in the car doesn't sound fun with a 1 year old. I'm actually surprised he's not putting up a bigger fight. danib, the problem with letting them visit us (which I would just love) is FIL can no longer travel in a vehicle for longer than 3 hours and we live 4.5 hours away. He has degenerative disc disease thus far nothing (cortisone shots, PT, etc.) has helped so chances are we have to head up or just not go!

ehhh I get it Cheshie6. my H can't just take time off and we have to know know when he's taking time off so that people don't get scheduled. And our kennel suggests scheduling 12 weeks out during the holiday season since it's such a popular travel time. I think this might be one of those every family is different scenarios. I wish I had a family that the traditions were just set and we do xyz and it's a wonderful time. But, it's pulling teeth to get anyone to want to do anything. So we'll be starting our own traditions. If people want to join GREAT, if not then their loss.

I hope Santa brings you a bread machine. 🎅🏻 🍞 🤞🏻 Is that where you make yours? I've thought about getting one many many times but just don't know enough about it to know if it's worth it. I would love to stop buying bread. Really, I would love to cut a majority of my grocery list down from gardening and making at home. Yes. You literally dump ingredients, push a few buttons, and walk away. In 3 or so hours, bread. I occasionally make rolls and stuff in the oven but usually I just go for the loaf. If you want to get fancy you can also make a sourdough starter, where you actually ferment it, but that's kind of next level. I have tried 4 or 5 times and only had one success (it's tricky because if you're not careful it will spoil, but so delicious when it goes right). Oooooo yes! I cannot wait till the kids are old enough to play outside with little supervision while I garden.

sophiegrace, I have a bread maker too. I don't use it very often but it's super easy when I so. Plus it makes the house smell amazing!

*puts bread maker on Christmas list* starbuck I would love to have a sourdough starter. I've heard that people like to name theirs if it does well. That kind of behavior appeals to me. I don't do well keeping that sort of stuff alive though, so I'm not sure if I should attempt it quite yet.

If people want to join GREAT, if not then their loss. You touch on my biggest issue... which is DH is rarely home for Christmas. In a perfect world, he's home every other year but that's not our average. We average about 1 every 3 years because other things got in the way. Changing rotations for babies, new crew members, training, vacations, etc. I always let him volunteer to miss Christmas because his relief had kids and we didn't. DH wasn't even here for Christmas last year. He was only home for a week after L was born and then gone for 5 weeks. I don't know... i guess is goes back to me thinking she's half assing being my kid's grandma. Or it's me still having high expectations and even though I thought this was really low in that respect. ETA: or I’m a psycho type A person who doesn’t know how to relax like this type B family. Talked to SIL2 trying to reassure her that it’s okay to make all plans this holiday season with the caveat that it’s all based on nb nephew and how he’s doing/sleeping/eating and she says “we’re flying by the seat of their pants and I’m okay with that!??”
