I did not know who Karla Homolka was before reading that article. I just did some research on her crimes and I am horrified, especially that she would do that to her own sister.
I would raise hell if that were my kid's school.

Welp. I just finished the Ann Rule book on Bundy. DAMN but he was fucked up. I am also now paranoid anytime I walk anywhere alone because he would snatch women within 40 feet of safety and no one saw a damn thing.

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk I like to listen to true crime podcasts and so if I get home late and H is asleep, I call my mom so that I'm on the phone because I'm so paranoid that someone will snatch me when I'm getting into the house.

Oh absolutely! It's horrific. But I always wonder if there was some DV there causing Rosemary to go along, or was she just as fucked up as Fred to start? I wonder the same thing about Paul and Karla Homolka So late to this. Karla was just as culpable as Paul. The only reason she was charged with manslaughter was that she offered up the video tapes in a plea bargain. The prosecution wasn't willing to risk Paul getting off on a technicality. Truly two sociopaths finding each other. He brought out the worst in her. I spiralled on this way too much as a teen. I was essentially the same age as their victims.

I would raise hell if that were my kid's school. Her kids are in a private Seventh Day Adventist school where they have to pay tuition to attend. I think as long as she continues to pay tuition (and I would imagine donates a ton of money) they won't bar her from being on school grounds or attending events. I feel bad for her kids. They are young, but it won't be long before they find out what their mom did. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

That movie was terrifying. And I knew she got out of prison but had no idea she had children. It's unbelievable that someone who committed such horrific crimes is free and allowed to just live her life now.

What is it, do you think, about Ted Bundy that makes him stand out? In the book, Ann Rule tries to describe it. She says that even on an operating table, about to be put under, an anesthesiologist asked her about him.

I bought it and am excited to read it but am scared to start. I feel like I will be analyzing every creek in my house. It's really interesting and it's not as creepy as you would expect, at least not to start with. The additional chapters as time has passed are really interesting as well. Her daughter wrote an addition in 2012 and she talks about meeting Bundy when she was around 14 and had long dark hair that she parted in the middle. She said all her friends thought he was cute but she found him creepy. He would not look at her. I think he knew his type and was trying to avoid identifying her as such because she was his friend's daughter. Does that show that he was a tiny bit human or that it was just too close for comfort? It does get creepy, no doubt about it. When I think about him crawling in the duct work in that prison and no one the wiser, it makes me feel ill. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk I started the book but abandoned it temporarily for a few others. I was also trying to read it at school, which I realized was probably not the best thing to have in my browser history. I think the fascination factor comes from a couple of things in combination. The brazenness of snatching women from plain sight is unusual and extremely unsettling, as is the sheer number of his victims. I think the biggest thing, though, is the fact that he was someone who you could literally sit next to at your job day after day and think was completely normal and human, while inside he was hiding this vicious monster who mutilated and murdered women. In general, I think people are fascinated that someone could not only commit these acts, but camouflage himself well enough to hide amongst us and fool everyone.

This is not actually what happened. They made the deal with her because she claimed Paul brainwashed her and essentially forced her to watch and participate in the acts. The video tapes were NOT known prior to the deal being offered. Apparently her defense team knew about them, but failed to disclose. When the video tapes were 'found', they showed that Karla was not only a willing participant in the rape and murder of the two teens, she was an aggressor. It was her idea to murder Kristen, because she saw their faces. She egged on Paul and pushed him to torture more. The public was OUTRAGED when the tapes came out. In the US, that would negate her deal, but for some reason, it was still held up in Canada. Most called it 'the Deal with the Devil'. She was sentenced to 13 years and did every day of her sentence - there was too high a risk she would re-offend, so she was not allowed parole 2/3 of the way through her sentence (uncommon to not get it).

They are young, but it won't be long before they find out what their mom did. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk When Karla was released, they placed 9 conditions on her release and if she broke them, she had to return to jail for 2 years. One of these conditions was " no interaction with teens under the age of 16" since, you know, they are her VICTIM POOL. I am not sure if these conditions fell off at the 10 year mark, but if they didn't, she could be looking at jail time. Regardless, I don't care if you are a private or public institution - Karla is a SERIAL KILLER and SEXUAL PREDATOR. Just because she was allowed to make a plea bargain under lies does not make her any less culpable. EVERYONE was horrified when the tapes were revealed and the fact that this school knew about who she was and still allowed her to be around their students not only shows a lack of foresight and oversight, it feels borderline illegal. If Karla was a man, the public would be united in outrage against the school and would be calling for their jobs.

If I were a parent of a student at the school, I would be burning it down. If it's private, and $$$ talks, I would pay whatever it takes to get her ass away from there. What the actual fuck.

You are correct about the tapes. I knew there was more controversy. I should have used Google instead of relying on my memory and a MacLeans article read in 93/94. Which is fitting because this thread had me thinking the other day about how media and dispersal of information has changed.

My HS law teacher told us that the tapes were found behind a light fixture in the ceiling and it was an area that was supposed to have been part of the routine search in the investigation. Do you know if that's true bbgirl?

My HS law teacher told us that the tapes were found behind a light fixture in the ceiling and it was an area that was supposed to have been part of the routine search in the investigation. Do you know if that's true bbgirl ? From my memory, that sounds correct. I know they were 'in' something, some sort of fixture and they absolutely should have been found from the beginning. The tapes are such a weird thing about the trial. The first person to get his hands on the tapes was Bernardo's first defense lawyer, Murray. He decided he wanted to use the tapes while Karla was on the stand, to impeach her and nullify her deal. TBH, I think Paul may have been the one that directed his lawyer towards the tapes, but I don't have evidence of it nor the time to deep dive at the moment. His lawyer sat on the tapes for almost a year. He did end up stepping down as Paul's lawyer, because he realized there were multiple ethical violations regarding his actions early in the case. From what I understand, he was new to criminal proceedings and didn't know/realize that he needed to give the tapes immediately to the police. By the time the police were officially given the tapes, the plea bargain with Karla was official, and for some reason, you crazy Canadians kept the bargain even after she lied to get it. In fact, her trial had been the year before. Had the tapes been handed straight to the police by Murray, Karla probably would have lost her plea deal.

Which is fitting because this thread had me thinking the other day about how media and dispersal of information has changed. I was thinking about this when I read that Bundy book. He was on trial or awaiting trial in several states and was notorious in the northwest. He pulls off a Houdini escape and is all over the news there's He goes to Florida and no one has any idea who he is. He walks around a totally free man. I cannot imagine such a scenario in our society today. Sometimes 24 hour nonstop media coverage can be good. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

So, I'm totally obsessed with MFM. Thanks to all who suggested it! But I'm so paranoid all of a sudden, I should probably take a break from it (I'm not going to). Yesterday I'm out walking with DD2 in the stroller and DD1 on her bike. DD1 is on the side walk and I'm on the street right next to the sidewalk, in a residential neighborhood. There is this white van barreling towards me! He's very close to the sidewalk and I'm like "he's gonna hit us" (didn't say it out loud). So I run onto the sidewalk with the stroller. Then I see the van pass by again in the opposite direction. It's white with NJ plates (super odd because I'm several states away) and it pulls up IN FRONT OF MY HOUSE. I'm 3 houses away and DD1 is struggling to get up the hill on her bike while I'm freaking out. The driver gets out, goes up to the house and I can't see what he's doing. He gets back in and drives away before I get to the house. {Spoiler}He was delivering a fucking Amazon package.

I fail at being on guard. A tree fell in our driveway (from the neighbor's yard). We ordered pizza and the deliver man had to get out and walk through the years because the tree was so big. During nap that day, I kept hearing some weird buzzing, but I was tired from vacation that I didn't even check it out. Apparently the neighbor came over and cut up the tree and cleared our driveway. Nice yes. A little weird because he left giant cut up tree all in my yard and alarming because I was none the wiser that there was a stranger on my property. Fail.
