Just as my colleagues give me a basket of sugary goodies for my birthday, turns out I have gestational diabetes
I have an appointment with the endocrinologist on Monday but that might as well be next year in pregnancy calendar... anyone else in the same boat?
I guess considering I'm already on meds for the thyroid and BP + lovenox injections, a bit more medical intervention won't change much but I had to hold back tears when my OBGYN phoned. Having to go on a diet while pregnant is really unfair.
Also, I'm guessing I can kiss the already sorely missed occasional glass of wine goodbye now?

Oh Waffle, I'm sorry you're dealing with an unexpected diagnosis, but high-five for being practically diagnosis twins (I also have a shitty thyroid and take lovenox!) This is my second go round with the GD GD, so let me know what you need to know. Yes, dieting while pregnant is a fucking bummer and really really irritating. SO much of this is body dependent. My care providers have thankfully been very agnostic about WHAT I eat, provided my sugars are in line, so hopefully yours will be the same. I drank some wine last pregnancy, and I think you can do the same this pregnancy. It's all about how your body processes what you put in. I'm happy to go over some things that work for me, and some things that don't (what I think I need to kiss goodbye, and I'm really pissy about, are french fries). Both this time and last time I've had the most trouble with complex starches like potatoes and rice. Bread is ok in moderation. (I eat GF so not sure if that makes it harder because for me, a lot of them do use potato or rice flour as components.) Sugars I'm actually best with. I can have 3 GF cookies no problem (which still sucks, because I'd like to eat a tray of them, but still, cookies!!). The silver lining for me, at least last time, was I did not gain any weight from when it was diagnosed (but baby gained just fine), so it made it easier after delivery. Have they already given you your testing kit? I keep a spreadsheet in a google doc and I list what I've eaten WITH my sugars, so I can identify over time what works, and what doesn't. Portion sizes for carbs will be key. But hey, you can eat almost all the protein and cheese you like!

I'm sorry you have GD. Did they give you any advice on what to do between now and your appointment?
Also, happy birthday!

Portion sizes for carbs will be key. But hey, you can eat almost all the protein and cheese you like! Diagnosis high five for sure! Thank you so much, you're making me feel a lot better about it all. And yes, I still have cheese... My BFF saw the same doctor and said he was not bothered about her having carbs so long as the numbers were good so that is a huge relief. I hope he has not had a change of heart in the last ten years! I guess I'll get the testing kit and all the info on Monday. In the meantime, I am trying to act like a rational human being and relativise. It's only 11 weeks, right? And the potential of not gaining weight would be pretty great. Still, she better be a brilliant baby, let me tell you! She'll owe me really fancy chocolate for mothers day at a minimum! Seriously though, thank you. I do feel better having some insight into it.

Waffle - it's going to be ok. Ask also at your Monday visit about monitoring - GD does make you high risk (though I'm guessing as my diagnosis twin, you were already high risk) so at least here, that means extra monitoring like biophysical profiles and growth scans. I did end up having a medical induction at 39w1d last pregnancy at least in part likely bc of the GD. I'm scheduled to deliver at 39w5d this time, and may ask to move it up, due to some research that indicates based on a broad meta analysis that week 39 is optimal for delivery for GD patients. I hope your birthday otherwise is pleasant!! (I totally missed the birthday treats portion of your original post.)

officedronette, you're guessing right. My OBGYN already said I would be induced at about 39 weeks and that was before the GD diagnosis. I just hope it won't have to be earlier as I'm supposed to go to this brand new hospital really close to home but it only opens on 10 December... The exact week I am scheduled...

Waffle, well that's not too stressful or anything. Yikes! I'm assuming you'd just deliver at an older hospital if for some reason you didn't make it? I can imagine it would be much nicer in the newer one - I had a hard time choosing practices because I'm equidistant from two excellent hospitals, and one is brand new and is like a palace. The other is literally the country's first hospital. I'd be lying if I said I didn't look enviously at the pictures of the brand new maternity suites...

officedronette, exactly. If before 10 December, I go to the old one (actually where I was born). Otherwise, the brand spanking new one that looks like a 5 star hotel and is only 5 minutes drive away from home.

I got diagnosed with GD this morning too. Ugh. How much of a pain is this going to be? I am so mf'ing tired of being pregnant. I just wish I was able to be home all day and not working at least. Eight more weeks of work sounds so insanely miserable.

tatorhead328, you won't know how much of a pain it will be, until you start testing and seeing how much modification you need to do to get your levels in line. Some days it's really manageable. Other days it really sucks. But I'm also gluten free, so that, plus the GD, plus the pregnancy restrictions can be super weighing on me. I can't eat french fries really, which sucks, but I can eat chocolates/ice cream/cake (in reasonable quantities). Every person is different, and sources of carbs are different - your body will process 20g of potato differently than 20g of grapes or 20g of wheat. Once you start testing, you'll figure out what your general limits are and hopefully it will get easier. And if it doesn't, it's not your fault - the placental hormones are throwing everything out of whack and you might need meds to help control it. Have you gotten your glucometer yet?

I haven't yet, I'm waiting on the nutritional people to call me and set up an appointment. I'm just so disappointed. Being pregnant with twins has been miserable and now I get to add this for the next 8 weeks.

tatorhead328, it's totally normal to feel disappointed and angry and exhausted and irritated and scared. It sucks to have something else to worry about. I needed to take time, especially with my first diagnosis, and even with my second, to mourn that I had this extra "thing" to deal with. And three + weeks in, sometimes it still really sucks! So definitely let yourself feel your feelings. Just know that you hopefully won't feel max miserable for the full 8 weeks.

officedronette, Thank you! I really appreciate it. I know I should just be grateful - I really thought I'd be on bed rest with the twins at this point so this isn't the worst thing ever. And I haven't even wanted to eat that much junk this pregnancy. It's just annoying to add another thing I have to keep up with on top of everything else and feeling crummy. Eight weeks!

tatorhead328, I hear you! It sucks having another thing to worry about. I got my testing kit on Tuesday and I actually feel a bit better now that I've seen my levels stay (just) within range after every meal so far. The nurse told me to test twice a day at alternate times but I decided to do it every time for a couple of days to get a better grip of what works and what doesn't (fasting, and after breakfast, lunch & dinner). Weirdly, my level was lower after having a couple of potatoes and a glass of wine at dinner than after a chicken salad lunch. However, my fasting levels were high both mornings. Fingers crossed your readings make room for at least some treats here and there!
