How much TV/Screen time is your LO getting? I feel like we allow way too much. I avoid the tv on the weekdays but on weekends we pretty much binge watch Sesame Street while we wake up and get the day started. Also, if I'm desperate for some time to make dinner or to get something around the house done, I'll turn it on. I tell myself that at least it's educational?

This is a great topic sheilathetank! I was actually wondering what other parents do in terms of screen time myself. DS is 2.5, and I remember when he was born, DH and I were like - he's not getting any screen time at all until he's 3. Bahahahahaha...that went out the window when DS turned 1 and caught a horrible stomach flu. Bubble Guppies and PJ Masks all day on that one. We still try really hard to limit screen time, but he does get some. During the weekdays, he often will get zero screen time. Maybe once a week or once every other week he gets a 30 minute TV show (Daniel Tiger or MMCH). We've found that DS' behavior is worse if he gets too much screen time (doesn't listen as well, gets more demanding), which is why we really try to limit it. If it didn't affect him so obviously, we might let him have more. On weekends, we will let him watch one movie. It's often either Cars, Moana, or Winnie the Pooh. DS doesn't have the best attention span for movies, so he'll end up only watching the first hour or so. Then we turn it off. DH will also give DS the iPad to play some painting apps on about once a week (in the morning on a weekend when DH is letting me sleep in), but that is only for like 30 min at a time. So I guess total screen time is about 1.5 - 2 hrs a week? 1 movie, maybe one 30 min show, and maybe 30 min on an iPad with a kids app.

Taitai, That's what I aim for and I think the episodes are only about 20 minutes long so you can get a bunch in and it seems like more. I also need to point out that K is not zombified during this time, unless she's really tired if it's close to naptime or bedtime. Usually she'll get up and dance to the songs, or play with her cars for a bit and then run back to the tv for a minute or two. We also will put on Daniel Tiger, Dinosaur Train, or Paw Patrol, but lately it's "Cookie! Elmo!" all day long. On another note, I found a small stuffed cookie monster at our local supermarket on Friday and K's head practically exploded when she saw it. She won't sleep without it. So cute!

I let DD watch about 15-20 minutes of shows in the morning when she gets up so I can have a bit more time waking up. She does actually watch a show- she clicks through shows on the pbs kids or Disney apps to listen to the theme music.

We probably allow more than we should, especially since we started potty training. When I know he needs to poop I'll give him the iPad while he sits on the toilet, just so he'll sit longer. But we usually watch one (maybe 2, depending on the day) show a night while I get dinner ready and then at the end of the evening he's allowed to play with the iPad for a little bit to wind down. He usually plays the games on ABC Mouse, but we had other counting/colors/numbers/shapes apps that he plays also. And one not really educational app where he tries to feed some monsters and he cracks up when they don't like whatever he's trying to feed them.
When he does watch TV he never just sits there and watches it. He's always up playing or dancing or whatnot as well. He usually leaves the room when they're just talking and comes back whenever a song is on.

We do very little television during the week, just because there isn't time. Everyone is up, dressed, breakfast, out of the house and then home, dinner, bath, bed.
Exceptions: *Tuesday nights we watch "So You Think You Can Dance" as a family, but it's too long for BH, so he doesn't watch the whole thing. When he starts acting up, it's bedtime. *Friday nights are "movie nights" and we watch a movie. He's usually pretty good about sitting for those. *Every night before bed we do Cosmic Kids yoga which is 15-20 minutes.
Weekends we're like you - they do television in the morning, and probably would during the day if we were home. I don't count hours on the weekend.
I think the most current school of thought is that the hours don't matter, it's the time/quality of programming. Like you're not supposed to use it as a babysitter (ha!) or in place of outside activity (which, really, do people do that? No one says "I'd rather my kids watch tv than play with something"). I tend not to worry too much about it because they are super active kids who spend a lot more time overall outside of the home than they do in front of the television.

We definitely have been doing too much since I got pregnant! Hopefully if I start to feel better it will go back down. LO usually watches 1-2 shows in the AM, then maybe 1 before or after lunch to stretch to lunch or nap time, and sometimes more in the PM, lately yes bc I just feel so awful. She gets almost no iPad time bc she is not responsible with it so it almost always gets taken away in a few minutes. Except on planes.

billyhorrible, we stick with PBS kids 9 times out of 10 so it's pretty educational. It's helped expand her vocabulary so I consider that a win.

It varies. She will be all about one show, and watch that one show for weeks, with no other mixed in. It was Clifford, which was fine, but it just switched to Word Party, which I absolutely hate. Maybe 3 or 4 evenings throughout the week, she will watch maybe 2 episodes wile I try to get DS down. Maybe every 2nd or 3rd weekend i will hit a limit, and put the TV on for a while, but they almost never sit and watch for more than 15 minutes then. I am sure it all adds up more than I want to admit. And DD does become a zombie while watching at night, which really bothers me.

Le sigh. Mine definitely watches too much. He's very active ... like doesn't stop moving/talking/running you name it so he's totally beat when he gets home from daycare. I'd say he watches an hour a day, he's 2.5. If the weather is nice, he's outside playing and we spend over an hour a day reading together so ehhhhh. He watches educational stuff with the occasional obnoxious drivel.

Probably more than we should, but aside from Moana, I try to keep things somewhat educational.
I used to get uptight about it, but sometimes you have to make dinner and no one else is around. What are you gonna do?
I do try to keep her away from the phones, though. And the iPad. MIL was going to get her one for her second birthday and H and I both shut that down hard and fast. Kid turns into an asshole when we bring that thing out. DNW another one.

My kid wakes up between 4:45 and 5:30 on the regular...no matter what time she goes to bed (which is usually between 7-8). So she (3.5) gets the tablet with headphones until we get up between 6:30-7.
Then Sesame Street or magic school bus goes on while I make breakfast and drink coffee.
Usually that's it for the day, unless we watch a movie in the late afternoon/pre- dinner.
But I've found that if I turn a movie on, they'll play with toys, run around and not veg. 20-30 minute shows will suck them both in.
I'm also picky about content, so Super Why, Math Monsters and Pocoyo in Spanish are mostly what is offered as "shows".

DS (just turned 3) rarely stays still long enough to watch a show, so I honestly have no idea how much he actually watches. He loves Paw Patrol and Team Umizoomi, but he also seems to like a lot of PBS and Sprout shows.

K was teething super hard last night with a slight fever. I broke down and put the tv on since she was velcroed to me. I found a show on Netflix called the Furchester hotel which is a sesame street spin off staring cookie monster and Elmo, two of K's favorite things in the world. I was excited, thinking it would be cute and fun, but boy was it lame. Much disappoint. Even K was bored with it, so back to regular sesame street it is.

He watches educational stuff with the occasional obnoxious drivel. This is pretty much exactly us. We've let DS get in the habit of watching TV in the morning, so he gets one show that he watches while he eats breakfast, and it allows me to run around and get us ready for the day and out the door once it's over. I think it also gives him so "wake-up" time to get going. Then normally in the evenings, especially after day care we normally let him watch one more show, during which I'll clean the kitchen from dinner, and H normally makes our sandwiches for the next day's lunch, or whatever else. On weekends and days at home, sometimes he'll watch a little more, sometimes a little less depending on what we're doing. He doesn't get any tablet or computer time at this point. He also still runs around a ton, we read tons of books, and incorporate plenty of other educational stimuli in there, so I figure if he wants to relax and watch TV for a bit, it's just not on my list of things to be overly concerned about.

No tv in the morning, there's no time trying to rush out. Sometimes I give him my phone so he cooperates so that's like 10 min. After school maybe an hr? Usually a movie, 6:30-7:30. Then DH likes to watch some news and a spanish novela at 8. Weekend we tend to watch a movie in the am (me and dh). And then Leo gets to watch a movie. ATM he's into Cars, Lion King and Boss Baby. He prob watches more tv on the weekend since we're watching stuff but he's not sitting there transfixed...and if it's scary he'll tell us to turn it off... . He really has no shows anymore. Maybe a PBS show about brothers talking about animals and pocoyo if we catch it on the spanish station. In all honesty he gets more screen time when we are out and about. He gets the phone during something like our shopping trip to Ikea where he wanted to run around like the tazmanian devil. And those are usually youtube videos about learning the colors. I have to keep my eye on it cause some crazy shit comes on too. He's 3 months away from turning 3! PS: he watched A LOT of tv on my maternity leave. He stayed home with me for 2 months. that's how I got any sleep in the morning (baby had his days and nights mixed up).

Aim for less than an hour a week. Weekends he gets to watch an episode of Daniel Tiger a day if he asks. He likes the Fisher Price storybook apps on my phone (aka "the puppy game"). On trips he can watch as much as he wants on flights or long drives. I've been trying to use screen time as a bribe for potty training, but no such luck.

She watches a couple of shows in the morning while eating. She actually eats quicker, when we have no tv on she seems to fool around and suddenly no eating happened.
After work she usually watches a couple more of her shows. I think she is super active all day and needs to relax. Although she is usually still making me some tea at the same time from her kitchen and doing gymnastics on the couch. We talk while she watches so it is still interactive to me.
The weather has not been nice about 70% of my days off this summer so we have been inside more, but when nice we walk to the park and errands. I also put on music and do some cooking or baking on Sundays.

If you youtube "learn colors trucks" it's usually one of the first search results. Eta: here's a link to one of them.

Trust me and littlelion on this. There are also like 15 other versions with the same background music and general "plot." I hate the thumb song too, but thankfully it's not popular with DS.

DS1 loves those videos, too grumpycat. And sheilathetank, is the thumb one the same as the finger family song? I hate that one too, but DS1 has been randomly making up his own versions of it. Like, "Blue car, blue car, where are you? Here I am, here I am, how do you do?"
