I dream of compost pickup. There are some companies starting who will pickup like trash/recycling for a minimal cost. They're really into restaurants. It's usually mostly in big cities though. But I have high hopes for the future. Right? I dream of compost pickup, but definitely see restaurants as the beginning. But I can see how it could piggyback for residents on yard waste and I get all excited. Our city allows compost in our yard waste bins. It's an extra charge, but it's nice.

what about compost/ food waste/ recycling in schools? I know because of the healthy food legislation in schools kids are required to take fruit with every meal (usually an apple here) but they are rarely eaten. A club in our school has kids sit by the trash at lunch to have kids put them in a separate bin to compost. They have also done recycling contests in schools where classes compete in having the highest total (lbs) of recycling and lowest amount of trash per class. Kids love competition and will work for a snack or movie in school which is pretty cheap/free.
if you can get the kids involved they tend to bug their parents about it and get them involved too. Finding someone to run the school programs will be the hardest part.

I just saw this today that Crayola recycles old markers. You collect, they send you a prepaid label and send them in. It would be easy for schools to have collection boxes. www.crayola.com/colorcycle.aspx
