Tell me about kindle fires. And the kids version. And the difference between those and iPads.
We have a 3-4 year old iPad. Works fine except like iPhones- every time you want a new app you need and OS upgrade and then there's no room. Annoying. I just deleted unused apps and it didn't help.
Do kindles have the same issue?

Do kindles have the same issue? They don't have the same issue, IME. But I also have hardly any apps on my kindles.

If you get the kids kindle, you need a memory card to avoid filling the memory. But you don't have the same software issues. I have a few issues with the kindle but like it overall for r. He loves it. I will need to write a longer response from my computer to give you more detail.

I'm just reading along as we're in the same position as you stringy. I'm contemplating getting him a kids kindle or his own kindle fire for Christmas. I had read some thread on Parenting and it seems like several people recommended not getting the kids version and getting the regular kindle instead. But I can't remember exactly why. #helpful, I know.

Yea we have an iPad that's just everyone's. I almost never use it. BM uses it sometimes in place of her phone to scroll the internet. And M uses it for car rides or when I remember that it's probably a little better than tv. But then I hadn't updated the apps in a while so this is what I ran into when I did it last night in prep for vacation this weekend.
Update tho. By deleting a bunch of apps we don't use I made room for the new OS and got her some new ones.
I don't like the idea of her needing her own. But her cousin has one so wait for it....i hear MIL asking already.

Ok, here is my input on the kindle...
We have one for R for car trips, etc. but it stays put away until it's needed. I don't let him use it all the time. I recommend the kids version - 2 year no questions asked replacement warranty (damage, etc) plus a year of Free Time.
Pros: The Free Time program gives them access to tons of apps, videos, books, etc. Videos require wi-fi unless you've purchased them. When they are in FreeTime they can't get out without a password. R has found tons of apps that he really likes. You can use the adult profile to authorize viewing of your purchased amazon content (i.e. movies and other kid apps) while in FreeTime.
Cons: Interface/setup is not as intuitive or easy as the iPad. You cannot authorize any downloaded music to be played in FreeTime. You can upload video files to the adult profile but can't play them in FreeTime unless they are amazon content and rated for kids. Amazon does a bit too much censoring for my taste. It obviously doesn't work with your iTunes content.
Overall I like it for a kid. It's pretty rugged and R enjoys it. For the price, I think it's worth it. I would prefer and iPad for myself.

Our house has 4 kindle fires and an iPad (stop judging me!). If I could have afforded 4 new iPads I would have much preferred those to the kindles, but the kindles do the job of kid-entertaining just fine. The Freetime program is nice for younger kids. I especially like that when you buy the "kids kindle" you get the year replacement--no questions asked. We have had to used that for one and it was nice.
