I saw that we will get 95% and I'm very excited that I don't have to drive anywhere and I get to see that much.

Not a single library within 50 miles of me is participating. Grumble grumble.

We are in the 100% zone. They cancelled DD1s school for the day. Traffic is supposed to be a nightmare around here because it's the end of summer tourist season and this crazy event.

91% at my mom's. We could drive 3 hrs to totality, But I think 91% is good enough

I don't have glasses and we are 83%. What do I do??? The libraries around me didn't carry glasses and I really didn't think it through. "Hey girls, yeah there was an awesome eclipse when you were younger, we skipped it bc mama can't plan."

dizzycooks my library ran out but they told me the walmart might have some. I randomly found some at a souvenir shop in Myrtle beach. So maybe check some of your local stores?

I know our local Lowes has them. And you might still be able to get some off of Amazon. Growing up there was a trick that used card stock. Punch a hole in one, leave the other without. Hold the hole over the unholed one and you can see it that way through shadows. Also I glanced at a box design. I think maybe on Pinterest?

"Hey girls, yeah there was an awesome eclipse when you were younger, we skipped it bc mama can't plan." You should be able able to buy them at a Menards or something, I would think? They have them at a lot of stores around here right up near the checkout area. They are $1.99 a pair. 83% isn't actually a lot for an eclipse, though, so maybe they aren't stocking many in your area? I think this eclipse has gotten so much publicity because the path of totality goes right through the whole country, but if you aren't in the 100% area you won't get any darkening of the sky or anything like that. It's crazy to think that even 0.1% of the sun is that bright. I like sjames2015 's idea of making a pinhole projector. It would be a fun project for your girls and you could watch the eclipse that way. tinydancer - I would look up the glasses you bought and make sure they are legit. I heard there are a lot of rip off glasses being sold that are basically dark sunglasses and do not offer enough protection.

I think they recently pulled all their eclipse glasses because they had problems verifying which ones were actually safe?

Lowes and grocery stores have them here.
So for our j16 babies, what is the plan? I'm having a party so assumed she'd be outside with us but now I'm worried she will look at the sun and I can't keep glasses on her all day (I think she will pull off maybe immediately). I'm thinking about having adults take shifts inside with her or putting in her sun hat/ keeping her in shade for small time increments. I saw an idea online taping glasses to paper plate for kids but I think they are too small for this idea.
Basically should I keep her inside the whole time....?

Can you put her in a stroller and put the sun shade down during the actual eclipse?

I am going to have glasses for dd2 because all the r at of us will and she will want some, too, but I'm not worried about her staring at the sun without them. I mean, she goes outside all the time every other day.
I don't think you will be able to see anything different about the sun without with glasses on until it is at 100% covered - and it is safe to look at without glasses at that point. And totality only lasts, what - a minute and a half?
I think keeping her inside the whole time is way overly cautious!

Also - it's not like all the adults and older kids will have eclipse glasses on all day. It's more of a put them on, take a look at the progress of the eclipse, take them off and hang out sort of thing, you know?

Yeah, I definitely need to check mine. They are supposed to be compliant with ISO 12312-2, and I think they will say it if they are. I'm not too worried about my LO, I think we'll have maybe two pairs for three of us and share. I don't think he'll be staring at the sun.

Make sure to physically check the glasses as well. My mom got a bunch and she and another lady pulled out about 20 and all were perfect. But she gave me 4, 1 was perfect 1 was almost perfect and 2 were bad. You can check them by putting them on and looking directly into the headlights of a car or something like it. The 2 that were bad I could see the stop lights and the brake lights.
