I thought it would help to have an entire thread dedicated to our potty training woes.

I'm thinking of getting a potty for Nugget because she is really interested in the toilet and tells us when she pees or poops. And she has dry periods. She's only 20 months, so I'm not going gung ho, but thinking introducing her makes sense. Is there anyone who didn't buy a little potty and instead just used a potty seat for the toilet? I've held her sitting on the edge of the toilet and she wasn't scared (she cried when I took her off) and she sits on top of the closed toilet when we brush teeth at night. I would love to avoid cleaning pee out of a plastic potty if that is a good option. She can't pull her pants down yet, so we're a ways from independent pottying.

I got the prince lionheart weepod that just suctions on top. so much better than cleaning out a little potty. Both my boys were/are fine with it. A is going to turn 2 this week and we are at the same point as you. He knows pee and poop go in the potty and when he poops he tells us. He will do both on the potty, but I still keep him in diapers because he isn't super excited about going all the time.

M always had a hard time with pulling down her pants and climbing the steps to her stool. She can do it better now, which is why we are trying to get rid of her little potties (we've gotten rid of one that we hate - but are taking a little more time getting rid of the second). In the early days when they are using the potty ALL.THE.TIME. it's so much nicer to give them some control with the little potty. But yeah, cleaning it out sucks. Although a diaper sprayer is pretty awesomesauce for cleaning a little potty. But really, you do what they want when it comes to potty training. If they want the little potty (or are freaked out on the big one), you suck it up and do it.

Sit her on the big toilet backwards or get one of the seats with an integrated magnetic child seat. I hated cleaning the removable ring way more than cleaning the little potty.
Teaching them to sit backwards is key for peeing in public too.

Might get a seat and a potty just to have her used to both. @brandiewine I've never heard about backwards sitting! Do you just pick them up and stick them on that way? I assume that's a difficult position to get into by herself without falling in...

But oh, if you're getting a little potty, for the love of all things holy, get one that is reasonable to clean, ie, really basic. We got a hand me down potty that was literally impossible to get completely clean. It was so, so gross. But the cheapy one with no lid anything special? Easy peasy.

Yeah the little plastic potties are annoying, but if you want her to be able to do it herself it's worth it in the beginning when they are learning. Plus remember on the little potty they're sitting at more of a squat, which makes pooping easier than sitting up on the toilet.
My dad built M a step to put in front of the big toilet so he could get up by himself, but it turned out to be too much trouble to move it back and forth so other people could use the toilet, so they went back to the potty until he was tall enough to get himself up onto the toilet.
He's 3 years 4 months now, and he's been potty trained for about a year, but we went through many stages toward independence. Over the last few months he's been completely independent with pants down/up, climb onto toilet, pee/poop and flush, but he still calls me to wipe him. Always me, never dad. *sigh*

We never used a stool for climbing as that caused him to fall more. He has been climbing onto the big seat backwards or onto the integrated child seat we got by himself for close to a year. It's actually much more stable than a removable ring for the big toilet. He did have a really hard time using that independently because it would slip.

When do you teach little boys to pee standing up? J starts kindergarten in a few weeks and my husband and I disagree. I say I don't want him to be the only sitter in the boys room but husband says he doesn't want to clean pee off the floor. Thoughts?

I never taught my 8 year old to pee standing up. He always sits down on a toilet, but he learned on his own to stand at the urinals at school. I congratulate myself daily that he does not pee standing up at home.

Our daycare has a urinal, so they've been working with C. We still do the sitting at home.
And the other day the daycare manager was complimenting C about potty training now. But then she said "Oh yeah, he'll regress once the baby is here."
At least I'll be able to drink then.

We have an insert plus a 14" step stool. She can get on and off easily, but pants down and up is a challenge. I blame the bubble butt.

The bemis next step toilet seat is great. It has a small ring for kiddos that magnetically sticks to the lid so adults can use the toilet without an extra step and kids pull down their own ring. Much easier to clean than a separate ring plus you don't have to find a place to put it when not in use. E used it until just before he turned five and then he started preferring the bigger seat.
I will say that I tried at first not to use a little separate potty, but E had his first success when I finally broke down and got a little one for him. I think he just felt more comfortable on a toilet his own size.

My kid pooped in the potty for the first time last week!
Then proceeded to poop in her undies or pull-up ever since (pull-up on for nap and school).

N just turned three. He will hold his pee and go in the potty when we tell him. If he's naked, he sometimes go to the potty on his own, sometimes not. Poop almost never makes it. He just doesn't have the bodily awareness yet. I was so hoping I'd get a break between the him and next baby, but with three weeks left to go, I'm not hopeful. But at least I'll be able to drink again soon.

LO will go standing up at a urinal or on the rare occasion at home, otherwise he sits. DH and I are completely ok with it not changing for the near future. He is 3.5.

+1 for the integrated kids seat instead of one that you take on and off. Agree they are much easier and stable.

B has pooped in his little potty a few times. He prefers to poop outside, standing up, on the back patio.
Today he pooped on his alphabet mat... it was an impressive poop.

I say I don't want him to be the only sitter in the boys room but husband says he doesn't want to clean pee off the floor. Thoughts? J never really sat down, except for poop. But I let him pee freely in the early days- I have some farm duties, and am pretty liberal about the farm kids pee outside thing. Translated to back yard etc etc. so he came to feel that standing up was pretty normal. I don't think he ever used the little potty except a handful of times, and has always stood. Stand and Deliver! is our motto... the midnight pee is a little wild still, and there is the time he was so tired he peed in a bathroom drawer- but I feel the errant pee is worth the ease of standing.

We had that Bemis seat stony mentioned and it was great, but they don't last forever. At least not with grownups using them lol. We've broken a couple. They will get you through potty training though.
I hate the little pottys because they become so attached to them. I say if you can avoid it then avoid it. I ended up taking L's in the middle of the night and tossed a buck where it had been sitting and told her the potty fairy took it lol.
But then again, it's nice to be able to swoop in with a potty as needed. I can't handle when people plop them in the living room on the carpet in front of the tv on them though. Like at all.
I did have to pull the pull out potty back out for J because at first he would only go outside, so I put it out there so he could poop lol. It worked. But I got rid of it as soon as I could.
I told D I didn't want to clean pee of the floor so I wanted them to sit, but he said that's way less hygienic bc then their penises are all hitting under the seat and stuff. So I gave up on that. But we did get one of those little urinals and it's been great. I love it.

We have a crazy tall ("chair height") toilet in our downstairs bathroom, so I figured that it would be a long time before M would use it sans accoutrement or help. But this morning she did! Oh happy day!
