TW FOR ANIMAL DEATH: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The top contender for Trump's VP Kristi Noem wrote in her book that her one year old puppy was "untrainable" and "useless as a hunting dog", so she took him to a construction site and shot him. Then she went home and shot one of her "disgusting" goats she didn't like. W.T.A.F. She's a psychopath. And I don't say that lightly. (CW) Guardian article

This is a genuine conversation to me too and I didn’t take any snark from what you said (and I’m not being snarky either). {Spoiler}“…doesn’t justify genocide, mass expulsion, destruction of land or other war crimes.”
I completely agree with that. I think this is where “different versions of the same story” comes into play and what makes the Israel-Palestine situation so difficult. On one hand, there is the story that “Ashkenazi Jews immigrated to Israel as part of a plan to establish their own state and kick out the Arabs.” Then there is the story that “Ashkenazi Jews immigrated to Israel to escape antisemitism in Europe and Russia. They purchased the land from absentee Arab landowners, and since Jews would not buy inhabited land, the landowners would often kick the inhabitants (itinerant farmers) out so they could sell the land to Jews.” Same with the Nakba. I’ve read that Jews forcibly kicked thousands of Palestinians off the land, burned down homes, poisoned wells. I’ve also read that most Palestinians left voluntarily (or were asked to leave by the Arab armies so as not to be in the way of the fighting, with the expectation that they would return shortly once the Jews were defeated), and that the Palestinians who didn’t leave were permitted to stay in Israel once the fighting ended. I imagine the truth, as with all things, is somewhere in the middle. I do think Palestinians who left should have been allowed to return once the fighting ended (it would get very complicated at this point but likely some sort of reparations could be made).
“Some Arabs want a two state solution, some want one. The latter doesn’t mean kicking out all of the Jews though. Just like Arabs lives in Israel, why couldn’t Jews live in Palestine?”
In an ideal world this would be possible, but I honestly feel doubtful that the Jews wouldn’t ultimately be kicked out in a one-state solution. My understanding is that one of the original offers from Britain was a one-state solution with Arab rule, as long as the Jews could remain. The Jews accepted this but the Arabs did not (said the Jews would need to be removed), which is how the two state solution came about. Then, once Israel was founded, all the Jews in the surrounding Arab countries were kicked out. Hamas makes it pretty clear it wants the destruction of Israel and death of Jews, and there is a lot of animosity on both sides.
“The only reason most people care or even know about Palestinians right now is because Israeli’s were brutalized on October 7. “
You have a point there. I think that is also something that, in a way, upsets some Jews in the U.S. - that there have been human rights abuses by many other countries (China, Russia, Iran, Qatar, and even the U.S.) yet it feels like the U.N. often looks the other way, and there aren’t huge protests. Qatar is a major sponsor of terrorism and a major donor to a lot of U.S. universities. Colleges aren’t being asked to break associations with Qatar, but are being told to divest from Israel. I understand your point about who should be held to a higher standard, but I also think for a lot of Jewish folks, it feels like “Why do you only care when it is Israel doing it?” (Side-note: I actually think that if there was a worldwide effort to break ties with Qatar who is a major funder of Hamas that would put a lot of pressure to get the hostages released without physical fighting - money talks.)
I’ll admit, it is tough for me, because I try to read and listen to perspectives from all sides, and they are so very different. Prior to this current conflict, I actually was a lot more in what would be considered the “pro-Palestine” camp until I started to read more (and talk to Jewish friends) and realized how complicated the entire situation is. I’m not trying to change anyone’s mind necessarily. Just when things get pointed out on here, I try to present the other perspective as well. I hope we can all agree on here that antisemitism and Islamophobia are wrong.
“People have to truly listen to one another and find common ground. I don’t think most are capable of this at this point and it’s devastating.”
100% agree with this.
Hopefully this made sense. It’s been a long day (and a long week solo parenting while DH is on a work trip so my brain might be fried).

Are we pandemicking again? Because I really don't know if I can. The CDC is once again being really cagey about things, so it's quite likely there are potential issues we're not being informed about. And this virus is currently much more widespread in cattle populations than previously reported, so... Additionally, H5N1 has been found in milk samples but they don't know (or aren't saying yet) if that presents a problem. The *hope* is that pasteurization takes care of the risks of infection, but no one has specific information on whether or not that's actually the case. Can't they, ya know, just pasteurize some milk and then test it? This doesn't seem difficult, but what do I know. I cannot pandemic again. But let's be real, even if a pandemic happens, people won't follow guidelines anymore. Too much freedom treading and whatnot.

I don't know anything about bird flu like symptoms and stuff. But we're fucked in the event of another pandemic.

The horrible dog story has broken me. WTAF. I can’t believe someone would do it in the first place, but then also admit it to the entire world as an anecdote in their book?! There is no rock bottom for these people.

Shooting a puppy instead of surrendering to a shelter is unfathomable to me.
Remember when the worst animal cruelty was mittens and the car strapping incident? Innocent times.

Yesterday there was so many tornados around the Omaha metro area (Elkhorn, Bennington, OMA Airport) and Wahoo and Minden IA (which looks flattened from photos). The sirens began just after 3pm, when there was a tornado spotted in Lincoln, and continued through nearly every school pick up time. There was 30-40 homes gone from the first local touchdown. There were so many all over the meteorologists were having trouble keeping up with the reporting. It is truly amazing there were no casualties. The sirens, phone alerts, schools sheltering, people (for the most part) heeding the warnings and taking shelter was all key with the outcome.
Still no word from our actual mayor, who alwys seems to be missing during and after a crisis.
