JJ Watt (former Texan football player) tweeting/instagramming his journey with the ACOTAR series that his soccer player wife made him read is killing me. Absolutely hilarious but relatable how he went from Team Tamlin to Team Rhys real quick, Aw I didn't know that series has a Rhys! I should tell my Rhys! Is ACOTAR remotely tween/teen appropriate?

Ember in the ashes is pretty teen appropriate. Hunger games.
I havenβt read these but theyβre fantasy and my teens liked them. I hope theyβre appropriate lol Scythe Shadow and Bone The coldest touch Beetle and the hollowbones

The only other book Rhys I know is from marrying winterbourne. Not remotely teen appropriate π

While Iβm spamming the thread, I started butcher and blackbird. Iβm not sure what the heck Iβm reading but Iβm keeping on.
Iβm also reading the 57 bus along with my teen.

I have finished a few over the last couple of weeks.
3 stars: Five Survive by Holly Jackson- I felt like it took so long getting to the point and then rushed. But I was still interested.
Prophet Song by Paul Lynch- This book is so sad and does a great job of exploring the lives of those who live in a place torn apart by war. I don't need a happy ending, but I needed a bit more buttoning up in the end, hence the 3 stars.
The Stranger in Our House by Sarah Denzil- it was good enough but pretty predictable.
4 stars: The Marriage Act by John Marrs. I would say 4.5. This book with stay with me for sure. It took a bit to wrap my head around all of the different story lines but once I did I wanted more from each. It was a very scary picture of what our future could look like with AI and government control.
Everyone on This Train Is a Suspect by Benjamin Stevenson. I started this on audio but the narrator did not sound like the Ernest in my head so I waited the many months for the book. I didn't love it like the first book but I was kept guessing and enjoyed most of it. I didn't find Ernest quite as enjoyable this time around so I am sure that played into my rating.
I am currently finishing up Nightwatching by Tracy Sierra on audio but it is likely getting 2 stars. I'm so over the unreliable narrator trope but I always get sucked in and then have to keep going to find out if the person is crazy or not. So I am hate listening right now. Just an hour to go!

I finally finished Severance by Ling Ma for my book club and overall I found it to be kind of meh. I understand what it was going for and how it was looking at the mindlessness of a lot of our daily tasks/work as millenials in late-stage capitalism, as well as the immigrant experience, through the lens of a world ending virus (which felt prescient for COVID at times) but it honestly fell flat for me. The ending felt abrupt and the main character just...bored me. Anyways, I think it will make for some good conversation with my book club and I think I'll probably be an outlier in not liking it.
I just started The House of Last Resort by Christopher Golden, a haunted house story in Italy, so hopefully it will be good.

I also gave him the 100 book series around that time and I know he liked a few of them, though I'm not sure if he finished the series.

While I as a teen girl would have loved it, lol, as a parent, I wouldn't want my kid reading it before high school, at the earliest. I fully recognize my hypocrisy because I was reading erotica on livejournal when I was like, 13. So.

Thereβs a Rhys in The Ex Hex but itβs mildly spicy romcom so probably not appealing to a tween boy

I just spent the last three days ripping through Powerless. Despite its very hunger games adjacent plot line, I loved it. I'm bummed book two of the trilogy doesn't come out until July.
I'm about a quarter of the way through Just For The Summer and it's ok. Sounds like it picks up based on everyone's comments up thread though.

You are close to the point where it started to pick up for me though and then I read the last 50% in one day.

I follow Sophie Kinsella on Fb and she announced she has brain cancer. Itβs Glioblastoma, which is a pretty devastating diagnosis, but she said sheβs stable right now. Hoping sheβs able to beat this.

Against my better judgement I finished Sheβs Not Sorry. Wow that was not good. Took forever to really get going and then the big twist was super obvious. So many plot holes. Yeah do not recommend.

A family member was actually misdiagnosed with this particular tumor last month, so we had recently been reading the statistics on it and they are grim. Sheβs already made it longer than most people so Iβm hoping that she continues to do well. (Our family member has another type of tumor with a much better prognosis but still, fuck cancer in all of its forms)

I canβt even imagine how traumatic those couple of weeks were for him, heβs only mid-30s.

I finished How to End a Love Story and mostly enjoyed it. I had some issues with it but I thought it was pretty solid for a debut novel. There are some very TW topics in there, just FYI.
Iβm going to read The Gathering by CJ Tudor next.

Expiration Dates by Rebecca Serle came out in March and I adored it. Julia Whelan narrates and it really only could have been her.

Blahhhh Just keep it until you finish it and pay the late fee (if your library still has those). Thatβs what I would do (and have done in the past). The people waiting in line will survive π

I get why doctors try to prepare people for the worst, but it makes things so much more difficult. Reminds me of the non-issue that we were told was a horrible issue during my pregnancy with DD1 and the gut wrenching anxiety it caused us for about two weeks. Just, ugh. I would never wish that kind of sadness and pain on someone. I'm glad it didn't end up being glioblastoma.
