We can get "Jack" cheese here in VT, but it is so lackluster. The main company who makes it here makes it gross. It reminds me of non-fat cheese (but it's not non-fat). Other brands are fine, but pretty much like mozzarella knock offs. MH was blown away when he had Monterey Jack in the Bay Area. Tang, texture, melty, all the good things. I'm sure that it exists tasty in other places too, but all of it is tasty in the Bay Area. I'm a huge fan of the items that a region doesn't even know that they do better than everyone else. Like everyone knows the bread in the Bay Area, but sandwiches are amazing too. Not just for the bread, but because people know how to properly build them and customers just expect great sandwiches. Most random sandwich shops are going to have really good sandwiches. In VT, burgers are amazing. The meat, the way they are cooked, the bun, etc. Any burger you get at a reasonably good place is going to be fantastic. And especially good if they're using local meat. These "surprise" good items are usually not even that exciting to the locals because it's all good everywhere and so easy to get. I didn’t realize tri-tip was apparently a California thing until we moved back here and my East Coast husband wasn’t familiar with it. Everyone else is missing out! Tri-tip is a bottom sirloin butt or triangle roast/steak. Made popular in calif, but the cut of meat exists in the east some places. Often just made into hamburger. but Could be called bottom sirloin, triangle steak santa Maria or Newport steak. I don't usually buy plain Monterey jack, I get pepper jack quite a bit. Haven't been eating much cheddar jack since we Gave that name to the orange and white cat. Lol

So planning is coming along. Highly recommend the Wanderlog app/website for anyone else planning a trip with a full itinerary, as it's been great. So my mom will be with us for the San Diego portion of the trip and I'm wondering what location will be best if we want to go out to dinner just H and I and then walk back to the hotel. Are there locations like that? Or does everyone Uber everywhere? Although looking back through the posts it sounds like maybe Carlsbad is a better fit. brux You stayed in both San Diego and Carlsbad and preferred Carlsbad right? And you did walk to dinner every night?

Also thatgolfb we'll have to go trick or treating in San Diego. Can you recommend a neighborhood?

adelbert unfortunately there aren’t very many walkable places to stay and be able to walk to dinner. I do think the Bahia at mission bay is still a good option for this- there are places on the beach in mission beach and pacific beach that are pretty close by. Cannonball is above Draft on Mission Beach, def walking distance to/from the Bahia. The views are great.

And you did walk to dinner every night? when we stayed in downtown San Diego, we ubered or drove ourselves to dinners. Our hotel was right by the USS Midway museum, for reference. It wasn’t a gorgeous beachy location, more like office buildings downtown kind of place. We spent 3 nights in Carlsbad and walked to dinner every night, but also drove to the next town over (Oceanside) for tacos and beer. Carlsbad was more of a cute vacation town while San Diego is more of a big city with cute neighborhoods. The one downside of Carlsbad is that it’s a bit of a drive into San Diego for the zoo, so that’s why we split the trip up. But I’ve heard good things about the Safari Park outpost of the zoo, which is up by Carlsbad.

Tho now that I’m thinking about it, we usually ubered to dinner and then walked back to the hotel in San Diego too.
From our hotel, we were walkable to the Little Italy neighborhood and went there twice for dinner and brunch.

Maybe staying in La Jolla San Diego would be a good spot?

Maybe staying in La Jolla San Diego would be a good spot? I agree with this. Definitely a lot of walking distance restaurants and cute shops. La Jolla Cove hotel is in a great location right on the water. Brockton Villa restaurant is a few minutes walk, and some of the other restaurants are just a short uphill walk. George’s on the Cove is my favorite, but Duke’s (same Duke’s as in Hawaii) and Cody’s are good, too. And the Cottage is one of my fave brunch places in all of San Diego (albeit not right on the water).

If you are going to be near hearst castle, you can pull over and look at the elephant seals in San Simeon being silly and smelly on the beach

The boys don't care about decorations, they just want candy lol. Is San Diego one of those places where you don't do Halloween on the actual day? I can't mess this part up or my boys will be so sad.

I have never heard of anywhere in CA not doing Halloween on 10/31. I never in my life heard of that until posting here.

I took all of your advice and found something in La Jolla (had to look up how it is pronounced lol). I booked the Pantai Inn which looks like it will be super central for visiting all those great restaurants you recommended thatgolfb! Plus I got my ocean views. I'm really excited to check out the area.

adelbert, you should google best neighborhoods near where you're staying for trick or treating. I know my actual little neighborhood is super quiet and we get only about 20-30 kids. While the neighboring town has a subdivision that is THE SPOT for TOT'ing. HELLA people come from all over, lots of decorations, driveways parties, etc (very American movie Halloween feels).

thatgolfb We are going next week and meeting my trendy CA cousins for drinks and dinner in Carlsbad. I don't know where but probably not overly fancy. What are the cool girls wearing in CA at night this time of year? I'm kind of stumped on packing.

My personal choice would be jeans, blouse, cute jacket, and boots or booties. Actually it depends on when next week because end of week looks to be warmer.
