I don't normally post here but I feel like I am going to lose my damn mind. How are we supposed to raise our kids in this country?? I hate guns. Dude, we got another fucking call today. I'm going to lose my mind. I can't. After last week, and now more babies killed by gun violence in their school, somewhere that should be safe. I feel so broken.

I cornered a state representative from Chattanooga in an airport back in June last year. I laid into him about being a teacher and my kids being grade school children (they were standing right next to me) and how his stance on gun control made me and my children collateral. That fucking asshole looked me in the eyes, looked at my children, and fucking brushed me off and refused to engage. I tried to ask him why he stood against gun control, why he didn't want to protect my children and the children of his constituents. Why should my life be on the line, that's not what I signed up. He rambled on about making schools safer. I countered that I didn't deserve to work in a fortress, my children didn't deserve to go to school in a fortress, so he could continue to have access to military grade weapons. He got pissed and stormed off. This is two hours from that fucker. Nothing will change. But no, it's fine, I'll keep rushing home from work in the middle of the day when I get robocalls that my kids school is under emergency evacuation for possible threats. These spineless politicians can all go get fucked. Good for this lady. We need more of her.

Now I’m reading the shooter was trans which is going to makes the right giddy with how they can spin this now. 🤬 I saw that and my heart just sank. I read that she went to that school, and it's a Christian school, and can just imagine how she was treated or taught while there. (Of course not all Christian schools are bad, but I am afraid that may have played a part. She was likely failed in many ways. And of course what she did is inexcusable. It's just sad all around.)

All I’ve seen confirmed is she is 28 and allegedly a former student. I’ve seen people discussing whether she’s trans on Twitter but also that they’re attributing to the wrong name/person. Are any news sources reporting?
Eta: NVM, did some further searching and saw the police chief mentioned it. Apologies, still catching up.

Yep. Now she’ll be portrayed as an evil transgender woman who murdered Christian kids. They will use her gender identity as a reason this happened, not the fact that guns are way too fucking easy to get.

And they’ll blame the entire transgender community, while at the same time swearing each white guy with a history of domestic violence is a lone wolf and we shouldn’t blame all men for the actions of one. I am so goddamn angry and sick of this bullshit.

Lots of reports are misgendering the perpetrator, they were a trans man not a trans woman.
And yes, I fear that this is only going to serve as an inflection point that spurs on more anti-trans violence.

This is an article that talks about the woman who spoke up during the press conference. She and her family were at the Highland Park parade shooting. Gifted article so anyone can read. This is all so overwhelming. wapo.st/3nsnW3H

cnf I was reading about Nashville when the school popped up on my phone and my heart sank even further. It’s just too much. I realized tonight that for 3rd grade I should request my twins be in classrooms as far apart as possible. How sick.

My DD’s school had a lockdown recently. It ended up being an altercation between two students and no one was hurt. But there wasn’t very much information for a while after the initial text informing parents of the lockdown. It was terrifying. My kid said she had just walked out of one of her classes, so she went back in. But other kids were reporting that teachers were running down the hall, pushing kids into the nearest rooms. No one knew at first what was happening, so they were obviously doing what they had to do. It’s not fair to our kids or our teachers.
School staff are putting their lives on the line every single day and they definitely did not sign up for this. And it really feels like it’s part of the GOP’s plan to push parents to home school, thereby continuing the decline of public schools. It’s terrorism.

It just feels like at this point there is no hope. And I honestly feel if things continue it's a matter of when not if that my children deal with a shooting at their schools.
A few weeks ago my school was placed on lockdown by our police a few minutes before drop off began. It was terrifying and I was trying to make sure my own child was accounted for while making sure my students that were waiting outside were safe.
As a parent it is terrifying. As a teacher it is terrifying. And I am responsible for making sure my class of 5 year olds are safe and doing okay emotionally. While worrying about my own children and hoping their teachers are able to keep them safe.
Even the drills we have our emotionally draining. The questions my 5 year old students ask me after are just heartbreaking. This shouldn't be their reality. Yet those that have the power to make changes don't care about all of these innocent lives being lost daily. I am so angry and sad but all we will hear is "thoughts and prayers". Ugh.

The school I teach in has a good amount of fights. We go into lockdowns like once a month or so, and not for every fight by a long shot. The kids are so desensitized to it, they don't even flinch. They just complain if they get stuck in a class they don't like past the bell, or if it cuts into lunch. It's completely disheartening.

I hate to sound like a complete, uncaring bitch, but I hope the families of the victims of the Nashville shooting are all gun-toting Republicans. If anyone has to know what it feels like, the people who put us all in this position should be the ones. I never want a family to suffer and God, I cannot with the dying of children in schools. But still, their families are someone, and I hope those someone's are ones who made this happen so it can hit them where it hurts. Fuck every pro gun politician.
I just to protect all the babies. It's so unfair.
ETA I know I'm being a complete dick. My apologies. I'm taking a Politics break for a bit. PM if you need me.

Just made the mistake of watching the shooter shoot her way into the school. Went right through the glass door. I actually gasped out loud. There goes the “why was the door unlocked “ theory. 🤬

There goes the “why was the door unlocked “ theory. 🤬 There is no reason in todays society all schools don’t have bullet proof glass in their doors/windows. It’s fucked that they should have to but it’s definitely a security measure that should be in place (because we damn well know the govt isn’t going to put measures in place).

We have to pass levies every two years just to keep roofs from leaking. Also it’s a school not a prison. I understand where you’re coming from but it isn’t the material the school is made of it’s the fucking access to guns and the gun culture

Instead of handing a teacher a roll of duct tape lol A third of the people in my town voted down a proposition a couple weeks ago to renovate schools; replacing windows, fixing roofs and HVAC, basic building upkeep and maintenance. Even though it was ZERO DOLLARS TO TAX PAYERS. ZERO. People don't give two shits about schools.

In the anxiety-ridden land of “what am I doing wrong as a mother”, I’m now being kept up at night because I can’t financially/logistically figure out how I’d be able to homeschool my children even if I wanted to.
I can’t believe it used to be “how do I keep my kid IN school” and now it’s “how do I keep them OUT” 🙄

I can’t believe it used to be “how do I keep my kid IN school” and now it’s “how do I keep them OUT” 🙄 It’s unrealistic for most people to homeschool. And it shouldn’t be a choice we have to make to feel like our kids are safe. I personally wouldn’t want to even if I could financially make it work. The covid lockdown of 2020 proved that we are not a homeschooling family. My kids need to go to school.
