I am feeling really heavy hearted for the LGBTQ+ community in CO right now. What awful news to wake up to. The gay club shootings always hit me in a different way. Not just because I identify as part of that group but also just because I spent so much of my younger 20s at the gay bars/clubs every weekend and it was such a safe space for celebration and being free to be who you were for everyone. I hate that it’s a target now. And on Trans Rememberance Day. This is what the fox news types want. They want to force LGBTQ+ folks back into the shadows. I know, and it makes me so upset. Fuck guns and fuck people with so much hate in their heart.

As a gay person of…middle age… I am sometimes happily envious of this younger generation because of all the visibility and awareness and support to be who you are that has grown since my youth. But then things like this happen and I wonder which is worse- fear of real life or death danger if you go out for an evening vs the silent unspoken rejection of my day. (Obv not to say no one was physically targeted back then or rejected now because of course. But the idea of machine guns in a crowd wasn’t what you worried about. This is just my wonderings)

Hugs stringyI’m afraid to let myself feel the sadness. My kiddo and I focused on joy today. I really do hate it here, but I love them and the people that love us.

I mean I didn't fully accept my sexuality until just a couple years ago, and I'm happy that so many can be comfortable being themselves now in more open ways. But like you said, I was never afraid of dying when I went to a gay bar/club in my 20s. The threats felt much higher at hetero/gross dude clubs back then.

I was also thinking progress is even being able to have a gay bar open on a saturday - we always had a particular night - usually sunday or tuesday or something not helpful.

Ahh yeah, I was fortunate to grow up when the Minneapolis LGBTQ+ scene was pretty large already and so we had several dedicated gay bars/clubs that were open usually Thurs-Sun every week which was nice.
