I know we've talked about the digital divide before and I recall there being some pushback on GD that everyone has internet access because smart phones (eyeroll) but our metro area library consortium did a study and the findings are really interesting. Key findings include: - 380,000 residents in this area lack fast and reliable internet (google tells me there are about 3.6 milltion people who live in the metro - so this is about 10%) - 110,000 residents in the Metropolitan area lack reliable home internet but were able to secure access at the library - Of the survey respondents who have slow, unreliable or no internet at home, o 27% have high school education or GED o 41% have household income of less than $44,000 o 32% make use of the library internet 10% is a lot! I think it’s also challenging for those who rely on library internet because it is tied to the physical access. The 24/7 connectivity just isn’t available for that segment of the population. I know a lot of libraries provide mobile hotspots or Wi-Fi outside of the library after-hours, but that doesn’t help if people don’t have devices or computers to access. I definitely take it for granted. Even something like a simple online check-ins for a child’s appointment would be difficult without reliable internet. We see this in our college students as well. We're rural, so even hotspots don't always provide decent access. During COVID shut downs, the admin added huge wifi boosters to the parking lot, so there is almost nowhere on campus you can't access fast wifi (not limited to students, it's open access to community members too). Of course, that doesn't work in the winter for those who don't have vehicles, but it has stopped some of the gaps.

I know everyone here was pretty suspicious of the kits, but just in case someone was feeling weird about not participating:

I gave my parents an ancestry kit for Christmas. Last December, my aunt received a letter from a man claiming to be the son of another aunt who had recently passed away. There had been suspicions on his part of a name of his birth mom, but since he matched to my mom at 26% he was certain of it. Not everyone in my family is accepting of him, but I got the chance to meet him a few weeks ago. My mom was able to tell him his dad's name too. He went from having only one blood relative that he knew of (his child) to having 3 half sisters, and lots of aunts, uncles and cousins.
My aunt had cancer 3x which the last metastasized and ended up causing her death and apparently his father died from cancer as well. Our other cousin passed away of colon cancer. He is grateful to know this family history.

I think I’ve mentioned before that I found my father on Ancestry. I was very hesitant to submit DNA, but it was really the only I way I would find info and I just needed to know. I have not contacted him or heard from anyone on his side - yet.

We don’t even have reliable cell phone service in our area so great internet is hard to come by for a lot of our area. They took buses to parking lots with wifi boosters on them for kids to do work when Covid hit. When quarantines were still a thing if the kid couldn’t use their chrome book due to lack of internet they were sent home paper packets to complete (but no instruction took place)

I know on 23 and me you can get your DNA results but keep it so you don’t “match” with anyone. I did it that way because my mom didn’t know her dad and I know she has half siblings but I am not currently interested in connecting with them, especially since my mom has passed. I’m not sure if her existence was known to them so I just don’t want to open that can of worms.

I am a firm no on talking to my neighbors because I like to use my space at home to reset...also I live in prime republican territory. But yesterday we were having internet issues and I found out that someone in range of our house has "Fuck Tr.ump" as their wi-fi name. And now I have to find them and become best friends.

As of today I’m free of my Elon connection. Turned in my Tesla model 3 lease 2 months early. It was an ok car and a great intro to electric for us. But I’m so glad I never purchased it because I feel like it was very cheaply made and I’m glad to be done with that company as I felt very nervous with their safety systems. I don’t completely not recommend them but I would only get one if I could have one of the higher priced models because I think those are made better.
I got a new EV not from Tesla and I already love it so much more.

I realized today that with all the campaign texts/emails I've been getting from Martin Sheen, that I was mentally picturing Martin Short when glancing at them.
Who is Canadian. And not Jed Bartlett.

The boys even took it camping and it was totally great on space.

Bannon was sentenced to four months! This does not seem like enough for that garbage human. it's not, but at least that just for contempt. All other manner of sins could still be addressed.

Oh, for sure. I'm 99% sure I have a half sister, but I'm also not prepared to deal with the ramifications of that if it's true. 🫣 I absolutely understand. If you're ever ready to face that (and they're looking too) they would probably appreciate some family medical history, even if you're not looking for a relationship I've been deep in infertility/donor tiktok and that's a frequently talked about issue I pretty much decided if it's true I would wait for her to approach me, and actually not doing one is to protect her and my mother. She would be the product of my late father's infidelity and my mom has been through enough in her life that I wouldn't want her to go through that. So even if she reached out, I would never tell mom and there couldn't be a relationship while she is alive. 😔 I stalk her on SM and there's a strong resemblance.

I really want to ditch our stupid aftermarket rally Subaru. Well I got the RWD (wanted AWD but it was more than I wanted to spend and I don’t need it all that often as you know) and it’s 280 miles on a charge. I think the AWD is about 250. But I think the 2023 will be slightly higher. And if you order one, while you do have to wait, you get what you want and pay MSRP. Plus the 2023s will be made in the US and eligible for the tax credit. You also get 3 years of free charging at Electrify America chargers and there are a bunch in Sacramento (we scoped it out for travel). I bought one off the lot which was basically a canceled order because I needed it before the end of the year and they had one close enough to the specs I was looking for. It’s really hard to find EVs right now. You could also look at the Hyundai Ioniq. That was another top contender for us. The Kia EV6 was too small and the Ford Mach E was fantastic but way too expensive.

Out in the townships (old house, X's house) there is only one cell phone provider that reaches that area. It's verizon. They have a monopoly of the area and we're stuck paying their higher prices if we want cell service. It's frustrating. Verizon was the only wireless provider that had coverage where MH used to work in CA and pre-rona he traveled there occasionally so we've kept it We're getting Metronet fiber installed in our metro area and I'm excited to finally have an alternative to Spectrum. Some of the slightly more rural areas near us don't have high speed internet at all
