This made me laugh. This is our state CDC director. Listen I don't agree with the new PM on much but the first Desi PM being elected ON Diwali was certainly noteworthy

Boring anecdote, but I used to pitch a Twister sequel to my parents where global warming caused an historic outbreak of tornadoes in late fall when they aren't typically expected and a group of scientists team up to study how climate change is shifting deadly storm patterns.

Nebraska had a tornado a few days ago and a big fire. The tornado barely made the news. It is happening. ::This is fine GIF::

I'm at the state library conference 2.5 hours from home in a hotel room with a Jacuzzi, fireplace and waterfront view. And a BED TO MYSELF.

Just climbed in the Jacuzzi with a glass of wine, bar of chocolate, fireplace on and lights dimmed. Feel like I'm seducing myself 🤣

I got to the original Twister conversation late but was thrilled that I've landed in a group of people who enjoy the movie as much as I do. I just wanted to add that whenever we're driving and there is the slightest breeze, if anything blows onto the road I yell, "we have debris!" at my husband. He doesn't find it amusing.

On long drives we often pass a lot of cows. A conversation along this line is not uncommon.

Anyone want to chat IEP vs 504 with me? After a contentious early start to the school year with the admins and a very grumpy eligibility meeting, the neuropsych/educational eval was completed last week and we have our big meeting on Tuesday. We've had a debrief with each of the testers. Her educational testing didn't turn up any red flags, but her neuropsych did, and her executive functioning and alertness* (likely both rooted in ADHD) were quite low, like we were told average was 8-12, and she scored a 3. And the psych believes that the low executive functioning is increasing her anxiety- which we as parents, and DD1 as self score, both indicated was elevated. But given that her teachers say she is absolutely fine in class (which I don't think is true- the psych is a bit skeptical too), it's unclear how the IEP eligibility will go, unless we push hard for it. And regardless we'll be able to redo the 504 with this new info. For example, we were told that for DD1, listening to the teacher AND taking notes at the same time is incredibly difficult. Poor kiddo. But even if the teachers think it's ok, we are definitely seeing the anxiety ramp back up at home- which seems like it is interfering with learning? I am not sure. Talking in circles here. Does sound like anyone else's ADHD kiddo?
*I guess I should technically say her alertness was high, as in distractibility in the classroom is a big issue for her.

byjove, Ionly have a few minutes beforeI need to run to DS’s parent-teacher conference (where we will be talking a lot sbout ADHD and anxiety), but yes. That sounds very familiar. With the deficit in EF and multitasking skills, I’d push for an IEP. She may not be struggling in the classroom right now, but EF requirements really ramp up in late elementary school and middle school as students start juggling multiple teachers with different expectations. She’s obviously an intelligent kid and from what you’ve described, she’s using all of her mental and emotional capital to hold it together and succeed at school, then letting go at home. As homework and extracurriculars ramp up, the lines between school and home blur more, and you may notice the anxiety affecting school performance more directly. Plus, that sort of anxiety isn’t healthy for anyone. There are lots of specific accommodations, along with EF coaching from SpEd Resource Specialists, that could help reduce her anxiety and allow her to transition more easily into middle and high school. Just a thought!

byjove. I’ve been out of the sped stuff for a while but I’d push for IEP. Schools are more accountable for them than a 504 with benchmarks having to be met. And it will be more helpful to track as she gets older.

Just a thought! Thanks! The psych tester did say she thought some of the anxiety was probably a direct result from EF, and DD1 knowing she is a smart/capable kid, but realizing she is struggling much more than her peers with certain tasks.

On a related note, how would you feel if you found out in this eval, that when the pysch evaluator did her classroom evaluation, she observed other students helping DD in class with math (in a positive way), but the math teacher (and her english) says there are no observed issues academically, and they have no concerns as teachers?
Also, we aren't finding out about tests before hand like we should be in the 504 (which I've not pressed about during this process, but now that we have the big meeting absolutely will), and DD had a math test that we only found out about because the evaluator didn't take DD a certain day because of said math test... and then we asked DD about it and she said she did pretty well and she tried her best, but she only got 7/14 correct... Idk. Are the teachers thinking they are helping or trying to reassure us parents that there are no issues?
I have questions!

byjove, I would also push for an IEP. My brother had one and was able to get a note taker and testing accommodations, which sounds like something your DD needs. I'm assuming that the teacher thinks with the extra help from other students, she is doing fine. Plus with more than just DD to focus on, she's likely not catching some of the assistance she's getting. Schools often fight IEPs because they don't like having to go out of their way, so be prepared for some push back.

Not what I’d hoped for but 🤷🏼♀️ My middle niece is doing online school now because she just couldn't cope in a normal school situation. I myself switched schools in the 7th grade for multiple reasons, but one was that the public school I had been attending was so miserable I wanted to die. I hope you find the best situation for your kid.

Not even Halloween and family (MIL) has asked 3x to DH if we are coming for Tday. We have not gone to either side the last 2 years because of Covid.
Before COVID, she would always invite early but we always went to my side since DH has a close Christmas birthday and MIL likes to throw him a party. So we had a rhythm of my side for the main day and his side for a weekend day. Then opposite for Christmas. His parents are also divorced so we have an added extra day to each so his dad is included somewhere.
I am lucky to have a large and loving family on all sides. We live two hours away between each side and visit every other month.
I feel mean about it but I just don't want to make decisions about how to visit for holidays again. It has just been nice being home plus we haven't stayed overnight in anyone's house the last two years. We just do day trip visits.
Tldr: How are you managing family and holidays this year? Maybe I need a sunshine perspective as I am grumpy about it.

orangebird2020 our family dynamics are a little more complicated, but MH also had a b-day close to Xmas We used to live farther away and would fly in for 2 weeks for Xmas, drive around and see everyone (most of our family lived in about a 2 hr radius of Chicago, some in WI some in IN), and it was terrible. MH is also an only child. We always did Tday alone and it was great and low-key. Drinking, online shopping, etc. For a while one of my cousins lived kind of nearby and would come up, super nice The pandemic was a great excuse for us to lay new boundries for holidays. We stay home for Tday and we plan to keep doing that. We tried to go to my parent's once years ago and it was AWFUL with lots of stress and fighting. We also stay home on Xmas day. Our mental health is so much better with the relaxing environment. Last year my parents came right after Xmas and MH's parent's came for his b-day and it was still a lot, we might need to do something different this year. I really don't care to drag all 5 of us up to see them, plus we'd have to get a hotel. ILs don't have room for us and my parents really don't either, plus I've personally drawn a boundry there and don't want to stay with them anymore. Things are also tight with MH working on a PhD out of town and our oldest in college, so hotel rooms aren't really the priority in the budget. Tl;dr I absolutely advocate for what's best for YOUR immediate family. Our parents/ILs are adults, they *should* understand making things less stressful for our kids. And if they don't, it really shouldn't be our issue.

We don't drag our kids around hell and gone on holidays Just Because. We've made clear that anyone who wants to come to us is most welcome. And we go visit at other times. Itself just too hectic to schlep everyone around during peak travel (and terrible weather) season. ETA: if you do schlep, Im not judging. I think you're just nicer than me 😆

Ugh, holidays. 😂 I’m leaning towards trying to convince H to take a vacation instead of seeing family. I just hate all the pressure and family drama and want to completely boycott it.
But, we have a 10 year old. And I do love decorating the house for Christmas. And my sister’s family might fly in to the state for Thanksgiving, so if that happens we’ll probably all meet at my parents and then maybe go see ILs that weekend, since we’ll be more than halfway there already. But I might see if we can at least fly down to the Valley and back. Otherwise it will be so much driving and we’ll all be miserable. Anyway, then maybe we’d have a good excuse to stay home for Christmas.

My MIL is hyper local so we see her a lot. My family is on the opposite coast and we rarely see them. We are flying out for Christmas this year- our first since Covid- and we are all really looking forward to it. But seeing them is usually low drama.
