Oh wow, I’m sorry about the snow.
The first snow here is usually my time to panic order boots, snow pants, etc for the kids.

Oh wow, I’m sorry about the snow. The first snow here is usually my time to panic order boots, snow pants, etc for the kids. So hey, can I ask a random/dumb snow related question? As a Californian now living in New England and facing my first -living in the snow- winter I am feeling pretty clueless about how some of this works. My kindergartener's school has mentioned that if we send snowpants with them they will be allowed to play outside even if there's snow on the ground. Ok great, that I can do. But what about shoes? Are they supposed to wear winter boots all day indoors or do they change shoes or what? Also any recommendations of types or brands would be appreciated. And any other tips. I'm not so worried about my H and I, we have winter coats (from visiting the snow) and boots but making sure my kids are outfitted correctly is stressing me out. If it helps this area reportedly doesn't get a whole lot of snow (6 inches at a time seems to be the usual max) so it's not like we'll be dealing with 4 feet of snow or anything. Even so - help! lol

elle I would send in sneakers or something to change into for footwear. I get snow pants from Target and usually ordered boots from Lands End during sales. Stock up on extra mittens and hats too, they get hard to find sometimes once the holidays are over.

Even so - help! lol Sending winter gear is the bane of my existence. We send shoes and snowpants in the backpack and they wear their snow boots to school. I just roll the snowpants really tight and I can get them to fit with a lunchbox and their shoes. When they were little (preK-1st) and riding the bus, I just had them wear the snowpants to/from school but now that we do drop-off/pick-up and I'm not afraid of them freezing at a bus stop, I don't make them wear them to/from. It's so much stuff and I hate it. I'm not sending snowpants with DD this year (5th grade) as she refused to wear them 98% of the time last year and doesn't really play in the snow anymore.

Even so - help! lol Our kindergarten teacher asked to send in a pair of indoor shoes to keep at school (year round, for rainy days too) and that’s what I’ve always done for daycare too. I like Bogs for boots but I’m going to try Kamiks this year. I figure Canadians must know how to keep warm and they are more reasonably priced. My kid wears a long sleeve shirt, a sweatshirt, and a down coat all winter and he seems fine.

I’m not planning on having him wear snow pants to school but our bus stops at our house. They do play at the playground in the morning but not for very long. We’ll see how that goes I guess.

I found a bunch of Smartwool socks at the consignment store last year and bought all of them. I take keeping feet warm seriously.

elle we got Kamik boots for DS last year (first grade) and he had no trouble getting them on/off He took an extra bag with snow pants and shoes daily. This year I’ll send a pair of school shoes to just keep in his locker. He wears the boots to and from school and at recess Stock up on hats/gloves etc. we lost a bunch last year. Put name on EVERYTHING (that’s how we got DS’ LL bean jacket back 😳)

We like Bogs for snow boots. I buy them second hand off poshmark or local parenting listservs. We have a pair of rain boots at school. And will trek the snow boots back and forth. Label EVERYTHING. And then label it again. for us we have had one snow bib at school and one at home bc they go out almost every single day unless it’s a monsoon or the temps are super low. Agree on the class shoes. DS wears crocs with socks 🤦🏻♀️ So we have two pairs of crocs- one for school and one for regular wear.

I'm sending an extra pair of snow pants to keep at school in her locker. Probably put extra mittens in there too. I send shoes if she wears boots. They play outside pretty much rain, snow, or shine until it's under 20/15 degrees? I forget the exact threshold.
Eta: the policy. Brrr. Schools will keep students inside if the wind chill is expected to be colder than -10 degrees below zero.

I never sent snow pants, my kid would have never worn them anyway and just lived in fleece leggings, also shes not a fan of coats. so thats fun.

We go to a hippie-ish school that spends one day a week in the woods and always does outside recess/lunch for an hour and a daily mile on other days. They have us keep a pair of indoor shoes at school year round. So we send them to school in snow pants and boots when it's cold/wet/snowy as an added layer. We do bogs for boots because they're so well insulated and do well as rain boots, too without overheating for woods mud boots. They've been kayaking this fall, too, so there's another added layer of water to get into. I basically buy gloves in bulk because two kids with ADHD means nothing ever makes it home. So we end up with a bunch of right hand gloves and things at the end of the year. I also buy a case of hot hands for woods days for their pockets. Lands end for coats - these hold up to get passed down pretty reliably, which is a miracle. linkSnowpants it really depends on sales. My kids have torn holes in the knees of like every single pair I've ever purchased. Target ones, Amazon ones, Landsend, LLbean, etc. It doesn't matter. I end up with the Amazon ArticX or whatever because I'm always buying a mid-season replacement for length or holes or whatever it seems. So splurging doesn't seem to matter here. They get basic black ones and that's it. They never survive. The best part of the snow pants is that burrs don't stick to them.

My kids prefer to just clomp around in boots all day rather than changing shoes. Last year, DD was allowed to keep slippers in the classroom and did, because everyone had fun footwear for carpet time.
When they rode the bus I would put them in their snow gear in the morning, but this year, we'll probably just roll up bibs/pants in their backpacks for recess.

Also in MN and woke up to the snow today, and my kid STILL didn't wear a jacket this morning, lol. She did put on a thin pair of gloves though. #progress
For my 7 year old, he'll wear his boots to school and have his shoes in his backpack to change into once he gets there.

LaRo422 that is a lot. Glad you have a great doctor and that the plan you’ve come up with works to manage your pain. Hoping the allergist can get YS in soon and help figure out how to manage his symptoms/reactions.

I got burned by these habits this year bc S1's teachers didn't give him supply lists until mid September and then all the school supplies (and sales) were gone.

I second the Bogs recommendation for boots. They are easy to pull on for even preschool-aged kids. I recommend checking used market and also Nordstrom Rack for them on sale.
We send the kids to school with Costco snow pants because they are cheap and really they’re not outside longer than 20 minute period. I hate cramming it all into an extra bag though.

Even so - help! lol It depends on the school. We would bring sneakers to change into on PE days, but would otherwise wear our boots at school. My kids just wear boots all day if it snows and nobody minds. I buy snow boots (Cat and Jack) and snow pants (Champion) at Target. DS’s snow pants have held up well enough for DD to use them as hand-me-downs - the quality is fine for growing kids. We buy winter coats a size up from Lands End or LL Bean and get at least two years out of them. The winter coats can be a little too warm during the fall and early spring, so my kids also each have a fleece jacket (from Lands End) and a lightweight puffer jacket (from Amazon basics) that we use for layering. We buy lots of the cheap cotton gloves for school and a couple pairs of nice thinsulate snow gloves that stay at home so they don’t get lost.

We like kamik/sorels best for boots. Coats are usually Columbia/lands end or llbean. They ask they don’t wear their boots all day so usually December- April they wear boots in and carry shoes in their backpacks.

Also MN here. We buy Kamik and sorel boots. I’ve had good luck with North Face when they go on sale. I don’t like Bogs because I find the tread wears out after 1 season, then they slip around everywhere. I have 3 kids so we try to get boots that will last and stay warm. On that note, we’ve tried Landsend snow pants, but prefer Columbia because they are warm but lightweight and the most waterproof we’ve found. Gloves from Costco. My kids take snow gear in a separate bag. If they bus, they wear their stuff and change shoes at school, this year I work at DS2’s school, so he’ll wear boots, but carry his snow pants and sneakers. I do invest in warm outdoor gear because I want my kids to play outside for as long as possible. I look for stuff second hand or wait for REI and Fleet Farm sales.

Where did my children learn to take their shoes off at playgrounds? We come, they play for five minutes, the shoes come off, and then it’s just meltdowns until we leave because they don’t want to put their shoes back on. Every time. Until I forget and we do a playground again and I remember why 😂

We usually get the coats that are 3 in 1 so we have a fleece, the outer coat, and they can be zipped together for colder days. They don't send kids outside for recess here if it's below freezing, so we don't usually send snow gear to school. We also get Cat & Jack snowpants and boots unless I can snag cheaper boots at Aldi. Once they slow down growing I invest in "nicer" stuff
We've had good luck getting coats really cheap at Kohls on clearance, with discounts, etc

My beautiful friends - thank you for being my support these last few weeks. Baby O came home this weekend! DS1 is over the moon about his “baby brudder” and keeps petting his head and saying “good boy” and offering the pacifier whenever he cries. It’s really sweet and my heart is so full seeing them together and seeing DH being a new dad again- and this time he is around a lot more than when dS1 was born (he was in his first year of residency then, so crazy hours). PDQ:
