byjove I would just focus on work/life balance and career goals that aren’t available in an academic setting and how you can shape your career to fit your needs. I have never worked in academia so I don’t know the ins and outs but I am sure there are negatives that do not exist in the corporate world and vice versa, it’s all about finding the balance of things you like & loathe? A personal example: I have my JD and practiced for a hot minute. There was a lot about practicing I didn’t like -getting protection from the court for vacations in addition to my firm; having depositions scheduled well after work hours because that was the only time the despondent was available, working nights/weekends into perpetuity. H and I were engaged at the time and thinking of starting a family. I just didn’t see how practicing law meshed with what I wanted for my personal life (set hours, family dinners every night, not having to work nights/weekends regularly). H owns his own business so there’s little flexibility there with out directly impacting our income. So I Found a corporate job where I use my degree but allows me the work life balance that I needed and wanted.

Do you guys remember my fury this summer about the Frontline Worker Pay for our state and how libraries as an industry didn't qualify? I applied anyways, because pissed, and today I got an email that my application was approved and I'll get $487.45 deposited into my account within 10 days. My husband got his approval email too, so now we're almost 1k richer for all our hazard work. That’s awesome! We’ve been lucky to receive some random found money in the past month. Apparently, the state of VA owed us money from when we sold our townhouse two years ago from our MCC. It came at just the right time to take a little pressure off our shoulders from having to unexpectedly buy a car in August.

byjove share your favorite part of the job. That is always my favorite question to ask people when they talk about what they do for a living. Sometimes they light up with new energy thinking of things.

are all the grad students studying subject matter relevant to your career or is this more general? If specific what is the field (forgive me for not recalling ATM) Yes, same department I did my grad and undergrad in, but my grad department had a different specialization that is not offered at this school, so I'm a little adjacent, but my diploma says the same. This is science/engineering. byjove, I used to run a nonacad/alt career panel annually in grad school for our WIS group. Speak to your motivations for choosing the nonacademic track and plan to describe the costs and benefits of the career you are pursuing. What is the work/life balance like? The pay? Explain the steps you had to take to get your job - did you do anything differently as a grad student than you would have done if you were academic track like pursue civil service fellowships or alternative internships? What kind of networking will help students who were interested in your career track? Plan to leave time open for questions. People will be curious and want to ask questions about your life decisions! And consider what your sharing boundaries are. Depending on your audience, these conversations have the potential to get quite personal.

byjove I would also consider throwing in some relevant stats and studies if you don’t want to talk about yourself the whole time.

Hey! We’re doing okay. He’s hopefully coming home tomorrow but he has to pass his car seat test, which he failed once already. I’m trying not to get my hopes up so I don’t cry TOO much if it doesn’t happen. Otherwise I’m okay. Working on weaning off the hydrocodone and just finding a schedule of pumping eating sleeping visiting and spending time with DS1 so he doesn’t get upset. Mostly I just want to sleep for days. Lol to me.

Welp I really should know better as a nicu nurse. Plan was to go home today but then the drs couldn’t reduce his umbilical hernia. They got an ultrasound and the surgeons decided he has to go for surgery in an hour bc they can’t figure out if the bowel is stuck in there or if it’s something else. So discharge is obviously cancelled.

addymac hey you, don’t let yourself talk to you that way. Yes you’re a nicu rn but you’re the mom on this one. So feel all the ways you need to as a mom and don’t beat yourself up. You’d tell a patient’s mom that it was ok to hope today was going to be different right? I’m so sorry he needs surgery, I’m praying the surgery is easy and that he heals super quick 💕💕💕

Thank you, everyone. He came out of surgery last night and didn’t have to stay on oxygen 🎉 which was one of my biggest worries. We had to work hard to get his pain under control last night but he’s more comfortable now. Unfortunately he starting throwing up green bile last night so he has a tube going into his belly to get it all out and he can’t eat today. But he did poop so things are moving a bit. Hoping maybe we can start feeds tomorrow. I’m trying to just not have a date in mind to go Home anymore. It all just stinks.

Thanks so much ladies for being my sounding board. I feel like I’m dear diary-ing, so sorry but also thank you.
I wish I believed in something of a higher power. I feel like that would help comfort me more than just science and medicine facts but I just don’t and it blows right now. Blahhhh

I’m so sorry addymac. It’s such a Roller coaster (as you know). The littlest twin was all set to come home and he popped a super low glucose number at the last second and it threes a wrench in everything. I cried a lot that day. I’m glad he came through the surgery okay and have everything crossed for a smooth and speedy recovery and for him to be able to come home asap ❤️
