+1 to a nice front porch. What we have now is tiny and uncovered. We want something covered that we can put a couple chairs on. I'd love a huge wrap around but not sure if it'll work.

I need a kitchen with a big island and a double oven. And I don't know how I would make this work, but I feel like my life wouldn't be complete without Dutch doors in the kitchen

UO: I don't like white kitchens. I am hard on my kitchen, I need colors that hide dirt, etc. Everyone on house hunters seems obsessed with white cabinetry.

Wrap around would be my dream! There's a really cute house with an amazing wrap around porch near my parents' house. I would be tempted to by it if it ever went up for sale just for the porch, even though I have zero desire to live in the town I grew up in and also be that close to my parents.

We had a white kitchen when we lived in the city and I remember cursing them every time I had to clean them (which was often, because white) and swearing up and down I would never get white cabinets. Except now I really want white cabinets. I think they look so nice with dark floors. I'm also in love with navy cabinets.

I also lean more towards trendy vs traditional when it comes to floor plans/layouts and style.

I kept telling H that I don't want white but it seems like wood cabinets are going out of style now so I don't know what we'll end up with. I like the look of white but I'd be kidding myself if I thought I could keep the kitchen looking like a magazine.

jubilantsquirrel I like the navy, too. I really like two-tone, and I like some natural wood. I could deal with some white uppers as like an accent. Like this:

jubilantsquirrel You have awesome house taste. Minus the Dutch doors. I love navy cabinets too!!! We couldn't pull them off and did white. But our floors are dark-ish and our countertops are as well. danib Besides pumping what are you going to do with your free time?! vino Dayum. And to think I was impressed with the $75 I made at our tag sale a few weekends ago. I am trying so hard to convince H to go minamlistic in or house and purge everything we don't use - hard sell - but if I can convince him I will most certainly be trying to make a few bucks at the same time. goldenlove No way to first floor master. I think it's "ok" in huge houses but I feel like it lacks privacy in almost every house I see. Ranches are very popular here (we have a colonial - formerly cape), and pretty standard the ranches have 3 tiny bedrooms cramped on the primary floor with one bathroom. My sisters house is this way and with her two toddlers bedrooms and hers, it just feels so so cramped. We have 3 bedrooms upstairs and 1 on the main floor which we currently use as "an offfice" but outfitted to be a bedroom if we sell. Our bedroom is upstairs to one side of the stairs and the kids rooms are to the other side of the stairs - I feel like we haven't decent privacy this way.

kleigh DH is home for a few days (he has to do a random drug test) so we went out for lunch and had sex in our bed lol (remember we bedshare, so sex usually happens on a blow up mattress).

kleigh This area is mostly colonial but there are ranches in the older neighborhoods. Most ranches are similar to what you're describing and it definitely feels cramped. You get no privacy that way. I like having bedrooms upstairs, away from the main living space. I don't really even like having the "open to great room" second floor because I feel like it's too open that way. One thing I thought was weird at first but have come around on is laundry on the second floor. Makes sense since most laundry is up there anyway.

lol danib to thinking about sex on a blowup mattress. You have to make sure those are filled all the way or you might bounce right off!

I think my ideal kitchen would be a mix of rustic and contemporary. Like exposed beams, some wood and stone elements, but nothing overdesigned. Kind of like this but with shaker cabinets. I am having a hard time finding the perfect pic.

I love that starbuck! I like different uppers and lowers too. I also don't mind when the island is a different color than the rest of the cabinets. It makes it more interesting, I think. I like natural wood, but I'm really picky about it and it needs to be well placed. I'm wanting to re-do our kitchen in the next year. Even though it's open, our kitchen is really small. The cabinets have a darker, almost cherry colored stain on them and the counters are a dark green laminate (so gross) and all that paired with our black appliances just make the kitchen feel like a dungeon. So I'm just obsessed with light kitchens right now.

That oven is what my dreams are made of. OMG I'm drooling at my desk right now.
I also think those floors and the wood beams are perfect.
I don't care for the cabinets, they look like they've been "antiqued" or whatever.
I think my style is more "clean farmhouse". I love a lot of the elements in the farmhouse style, but I don't really care for the distressed look.

We have gotten a lot of comments about our granite countertops. We got a leathered finish so they aren't super shiny. MH really pushed for them and I was hesitant but they are so unique and I really love them. If we had a bigger kitchen I may have done some butcher block but the space was so small I thought it would be too busy.

We don't have an island, or even room for an island, but if we did I would definitely get butcher block countertops for it.

Speaking of house stuff can I get some feedback/opinions?
As you know our house isn't entirely done yet. It's mostly small stuff but there is a couple bigger things outstanding. One of those is the first floor bathroom. It's functional right now but not finished off.
So upstairs we have 3 bedrooms, 1 main/"kids" bathroom with a tub, and an en suite bathroom in our master (one of the three mentioned already) - en suite has shower (no tub).
Downstairs we have one "bedroom" (we use as an office and will continue to for the foreseeable future. However it has a closet so that *IF* we were to sell we could call it another bedroom.
FIL insists we need to make the bathroom on the first floor into a full bathroom with shower stall. Although the bathroom is seriously TINY. You'd pretty much be able to wash your hands in the sink while showering. I want to keep it a powder room bc it's so small and no one is using the room as a bedroom currently. Plumbing is in place for a shower but I only agreed to that with the understanding that it made sense to fit for it in case we sell down the line.
Would you make the 1st floor bathroom a powder room or full bathroom with tiny ass shower. So tiny that the only shower door enclosure that would fit is like those swinging/folding shower door (hard to explain).

Love white kitchens. Totally transforms the room and makes it light and airy. My neighbor has the exact same layout as us but has dark wood cabinets and it felt so cramped. I also love gray cabinets.

We tried to do it here but FIL started a huge fight about it. Love the guy, but are you noticing a theme about what we do with "our house".

Oh, also kleigh, if you can get to Seattle by Saturday I can get you a ticket to the Ed Sheeran concert. You'll have to attend with two 10 year old kids, but I figured it would be worth. The one kids parents are loaded, so the seats are apparently pretty amazing.

I agree with starbuck, kleigh. As long as there is a toilet downstairs I think you're fine. waitwhat, I'm thinking when I do my kitchen reno I want to do grey cabinets. We'll be keeping our black appliances because they're all less than 5 years old, so I'm not sure how nice black appliances would look with white cabinets. We also have medium brown floors. I'm thinking grey cabinets, white or white and grey counter tops and white backsplash with dark grey grout.

Omg this thread just elevated my afternoon. I can talk about this stuff allllll day. We'll be doing our kitchen in the next couple of years and from what my H has spent on cars in the last five years you better believe it's going to be next level. At that time the entire house will get painted because of how open and connected the entire downstairs and second story is and we'll possibly be running stone up the entire two story fireplace. After that will be making the mudroom more functional and then redoing all the bathrooms. If we're staying here for the foreseeable future, and that looks like it'll be the case, this house is going to be my dream house.

kleigh I think the hook up for a possible shower is enough of a bait and hook for a potential buyer. No need to cramp yourselves now for no reason at all.
