For those without recessed or any wired ceiling lighting in living room and bedrooms - what do you have? We have a mishmash of cheap old table and floor lamps that are both ugly and not putting out enough light.
Especially in the living room - help.
I'm not into decorating so....go easy.

Another home question. Our new coach is a little high off the floor - maybe 4-5 inches.
ALL the dogs toys are under there, along with most of the kids socks and slippers. its L shaped so lots of room to hide.
Solutions?

My question would be— how much of a price difference is it to install some wired lighting in the living room ceiling versus replacing your existing lamps/lights with whatever new lamps/lights you decide on?
Maybe the difference is small enough that it would be worth it to install some wired ceiling lighting? If you want that, of course.
I know nothing about this stuff.. maybe that’s an expensive job.

There is an attic that runs the length above it - so I don't imagine its that hard. But I can't just go to lowes/amazon and get it done either. I feel like it would require quotes and schedules and a dude in my house.

So I suppose...if you have it wired in the living room - what do you have? Like what's in style. Its a regular 8-9 foot flat ceiling with zero excitement to it.

We have recessed lighting in our kitchen and dining room which are all 1 big open room with the living room but we didn’t do any there. I don’t really care for it because it seems too sterile. Maybe if you add it, make sure there’s a dimmer switch? We have a table lamp+standing lamp in the living room that we use in the evenings.
No answer for the sectional. We also struggle with this.

We currently have some recessed lighting in our living room but also a ceiling fan with lights.
I think if you ever do decide to go with recessed lighting, warm-light bulbs are the way to go!
The owners of our last rental had about 12 recessed lights in the primary bedroom with bright-white bulbs and I swear I felt like I was laying down on an operating table for surgery under those lights.

When we remodel we are getting recessed lighting.
Our ceiling is low and this is a pretty cheap option.

There's recessed in the kitchen and in the newly redone basement.
We rarely turn on the kitchen ones because the counter and dining table bulbs generally do enough and its super bright even on a dimmer.
The basement it works yes but 100% agree about the bright sterile feeling, even on a dimmer.
FWIW the new ones in the basement you can also change the light color - bright white, outdoor, whatever they are called. But its kind of a pain so i never do it.

We don't have overhead lighting in our living room and I prefer it that way. In the evenings, I like it to feel cozy and warm rather than super bright. We have two IKEA paper lamps on either side of our sectional, one tall floor lamp, and one table lamp on the credenza. It's enough for us. When I watch TV with MH in the evenings we just keep the paper lamps on. They're not very bright and they give a really cozy glow.

I’m team add-more-lamps. In our living room we have a couple, and I’ve been on the lookout for more. I inherited some lamps I don’t love and I’ve been working on replacing them. They’re stupid expensive but I’ve had luck thrifting - table lamps only, really.
My only other recc which I’ve read about and haven’t enacted - yet - is to put a few key lamps on a timer/smart plug so they can provide warmth/light automatically (and turn off automatically). Sometimes just due to laziness I don’t turn on all the lights and find myself existing in darkness unnecessarily.

Our living room has recessed lighting with a dimmer, and also a ceiling fan with a light. We never use the ceiling fan light and use the dimmable lighting always. We have soft white bulbs in there so it is never glaring. I would like a lamp in there to use in the evenings but I don't currently trust the dog herd to not knock it down, so unless I can figure out a way to bolt it to my floor, that idea is on hold. But, the dimmable lights work fine.
Our last house had no ceiling lighting in the upstairs, so we had recessed lighting installed and that was such a game changer. It was part of a large reno project though so I have no idea how much that specific part of it cost, other than the fact I purchased the lights themselves, I feel like they were like $30 each? If you have an attic above it would likely be a very reasonably priced project.
In a nutshell, I'm Team Recess All The Lights Always. I love the look of lamps but find them cumbersome to turn on and off, but I guess having them on a switch would eliminate that.

Extra storage and would block stuff from getting through.
