It's a new month! How was the past month reading wise for you? Did any books blow you away? Any books you hated? Now that it's fall and for some of us it's getting colder do you switch up the style of books you read? Do you like to read horror books?

In September I read 10 books. I realized there were some books from Diana Wynne Jones that I haven't read yet and she's one of my absolute favorite so I really enjoyed getting to read "new" books from her. I still have just a few that I haven't read and it has been a real treat discovering them. She was such an amazing author and able to write so many different types of books, an absolute gem. I do enjoy horror books quite a bit but I like them to really make me scared which doesn't happen to often. The first horror book I remember reading and really enjoying was The Ruins by Scott Smith. It's about a group of friends who end up in a very bad situation in the jungle. It has a mythical aspect (the bad guy is basically a sentient plant) but it works so well at creating a horrible sense of dread as you realize maybe it won't all work out. I also love speculative horror like Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer. I don't totally understand his books but I very much enjoy the journey. More recent favorite horror books of mine have been two by T. Kingfisher "The Hollow Places" and "The Twisted Ones". I definitely like my horror to have a bit of a supernatural twist. Unfortunately I've never enjoyed a Stephen King book, although I sometimes enjoy the movies Nothing But Blackened Teeth by Cassandra Khaw comes out this month and I'm hoping that that's a fun horror book to dive into. - The Homeward Bounders by Diana Wynne Jones ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
- The Last Graduate by Naomi Novik ⭐⭐⭐⭐
- Fire and Hemlock by Diana Wynne Jones ⭐⭐⭐
- The Game by Diana Wynne Jones ⭐⭐⭐⭐
- Hexwood by Diana Wynne Jones ⭐⭐⭐⭐
- This Is Not the Jess Show by Anna Carey ⭐⭐⭐
- Black Maria by Diana Wynne Jones ⭐⭐⭐⭐
- Inhibitor Phase by Alastair Reynolds
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Drink What You Want by John deBary
⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Feral Creatures by Kira Jane Buxton ⭐⭐⭐

September was a good reading month for me. Nothing that blew me away but all solid reads. I would rate them all as four stars.
The Mother In Law by Sally Hepworth The Heart Principle by Helen Hoang The Soulmate Equation by Christina Lauren
I am currently reading The Love Hypothesis and should finish that this weekend. Next up will be The Night She Disappeared by Lisa Jewell. I do like reading suspense this time of the year but can't handle anything too creepy.
I am always impressed by how much everyone here reads!

I read 4 books: Braiding Sweetgrass, Bringing Back the Beaver, Two Old Women, and World of Wonders. I enjoyed all of them but Braiding Sweetgrass was a five star fav.
I’m on track to finish Being, Nothingness, and Fly Fishing today. My stepmom gifted this book to mh so I feel obligated to read it. I don’t fish. I sit and read while my family fishes and then take photos of them with their fish. So a lot of the fishing stuff goes over my head. But the author’s descriptions of places are amazing. His account of the NJ Pine Barrens was oddly magical.

I went on a bit of reading streak and finished 10 books in September. I'm now 1 ahead of where I need to be to hit my reading goal of 52 books this year. It feels good to be back reading again. I don't tend to shift my reading habits by the season but I am open to more fall-themed books if they come up!
The winners this month were This Is How You Win the Time War and To Sleep in a Sea of Stars. I really liked Dear Edward but don't read it if you're planning on getting on a plane any time soon.
- It Ends with Us by Colleen Hoover - 3/5 - To Sleep in a Sea of Stars by Christopher Paolini - 4/5 - The 5am Club by Robin Sharma - 1/5 - The Nature of Fragile Things by Susan Meissner - 3/5 - Dear Edward by Ann Napolitano - 4/5 - Meet me in Paradise by Libby Hubscher - 3/5 - Home before Dark by Riley Sager - 3/5 - This is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone - 5/5 - People we Meet on Vacation by Emily Henry - 4/5 - The Stationery Shop by Marjan Kamali - 3/5

@notarboot I also loved This Is How You Lose The Time War. I've just looked up To Sleep in a Sea of Stars and it looks amazing. Is it a standalone?

Oh I have read Stephen King and some horror books, but I am more into the murder mystery/psychological thrillers.
I do often turn to these types even more as it starts to get colder and darker earlier.

@notarboot I also loved This Is How You Lose The Time War. I've just looked up To Sleep in a Sea of Stars and it looks amazing. Is it a standalone? It's by the same author as Eragon. I was a bit worried it would end with a cliffhanger (a pet peeve of mine even in a series) but it wrapped up. There is room for another book set in the same world/story but as far as I've seen so far it's a standalone.

For any Stephen King fans, what are some of your favourites by him? I've only read Misery and Pet Sematary, but I've always wanted to read more of him.

I read seven books in September, including two re-reads. Better than average for me this year, but I’m still two books behind on my Goodreads annual goal. It’s annoying me way more than it probably should (I usually finish the year 10-15 books ahead).
Favorites of the new reads were The Heart Principle and Beach Read.

My favorites by him are The Stand and The Shining. The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon is short but super creepy. I also enjoyed 11/22/63, which isn’t his usual horror but it’s well written.

I second The Stand. I also really enjoyed Under the Dome. I have started to enjoy his books more since I realized/accepted his endings are generally crap. I can let myself get into the story but have low expectations for the wrap up.

It is probably my favorite Stephen King book (although still wrestling with a particular scene in the sewers).

The President’s Daughter by James Patterson and Bill Clinton
Hocus Pocus & Sequel
Forgotten in Death by JD Robb
They were all really good! I probably won’t get to read again for a few months 😪

September was whatever is slower than slow for me and I basically just read more of the SVH books on my Kindle.
I also started Nothin' But a Good Time The Uncensored History of the '80s Hard Rock Explosion.
I know, I should probably see myself out with all this fluff reading.
But I do plan to re-start The Song of Achilles.
And I'd like to read something creepy with Halloween at the end of the month and am open to suggestions.

I read three in September Long Bright River (was excellent!) Eat a Peach - listened to this, was very good. I like when the authors read their own memoirs for audios. When no one was watching- good- a little OTT at the end; not quite what I was expecting but I really did enjoy it
On deck now: Crying in H Mart What you have heard is true Storyteller

I'm thinking of finally reading House of Leaves this month. I've always wanted to but it's daunting, and I have a huge stack right now, but it would be such a great October book

For spooky / haunted house vibes this month, I liked Home Before Dark by Riley Sager but I am a wimp and had to read it during the day. If you're a big horror fan it might not be as scary for you!

Notarobot, mrsnorris, MelanieCarmichael, thanks for the responses! King's oeuvre is so vast, it's hard to know where to start. I'll take a look at all your suggestions. I think I have an old copy of The Shining on my bookshelf so I'm going to hunt for it and maybe I'll start there.

A lot of us (me included!) read a ton of “fluff.” Reading is reading. 😊 I just read The Sun Down Motel and that was definitely spooky. Also anything by Riley Sager. Home Before Dark, Final Girls, or Lock Every Door are spooky and good.
