We went to the Natural History Museum to see the new Dino exhibit right when opened and while we’re waiting in the security line, DD1 say very loudly “what if the building collapses while we are all inside and die.” I was like lolz, that won’t happen, sorry everyone 😬🥴 kids!

If anyone is looking for a new show, Reservation Dogs on Hulu is so good! I cried at the most recent episode.

We ended up doing yard work involving stone yesterday so now my back is stiff. H took DD1 to return a bunch of random stuff so I had some quiet time while DD2 "napped" (layed in her crib and read books).

Omg. 🤣 How did you like the dinos? Was it crowded? My 8 year old really wants to go sometime this fall. We haven’t been since before the pandemic, but before that we’d visit every 6-8 weeks. We all miss it.

We painted the deck yesterday and today, so my back and knees are achy from all the awkward positions. But it’s basically done! Here’s a pic, for everyone who has put up with my complaining this summer. Next time, I plan to hire someone. 🤣

We all miss it. It was our first time since covid and we were really itching to go, too! My 8 yo is Dino obsessed. The dinos were good- the new Dino dioramas were A+ and our favorite part along with the fish tank in the oceans area. We went when it opened and it did not seem crowded at least- lots of space to maneuver and see everything and there were certain areas where we were the only people. Obviously masks were required. We only stayed about an hour, didn’t want to linger, and didn’t do the whole museum. If cases stay low, thinking of the air and space museum this fall since that is back open and always a fave for us.

Today was the pride parade. It was so great. In order to get into the festival portion you had to have proof of vax or a neg test. The testing line. Was ginormous. a local hospital was also doing vax on site and you could also get your flu shot.

Board give me strength, I'm speaking at the school board meeting tonight and it's probably gonna be a doozy since we had to get an injunction against anti mask zealots last week.

Went to the beach side celebration of life for the local mom who passed away. It was heartbreaking. Her eleven year old seemed like the adult of the family. And i can only imagine how much he has been taking care of his younger brother while dad took care of mom. Very sad.

The daycare child's rite of passage has come to be for my toddler. He has hand, foot, mouth but he doesn't have a fever. So that's something.

DH got it from DS and he had awful blisters on his toes. But HFM did help get rid of the pacifier if that’s something you need to work on.

HFM also helped my oldest drop his pacifier, but he has never taken one. I wish he would. He's also teething and has chewed his poor fingers raw.

So DS is definitely allergic to cats, dogs and dust. For people whose kids have allergies, if you have family members who have pets, do your kids just not sleep over there?
My ILs' house is really bad with decades of pet dander, dust, mildew. They have stacks of things that have been there for years and it's not going to change now. But it's close to us so we mostly do daytrips anyway. For Christmas, we have rented a hotel for one night if we're doing a Xmas Eve and Xmas Day thing.
My mom also has a dog and cat. Her house is kept significantly cleaner overall but DS has still has had issues overnight in the past where he's woken up and needed an inhaler. She is farther away though so any visit requires overnights. Do we just start doing hotel stays anytime we go? Do people dope their kids up with allergy medicine and make do for a couple of nights? He's never had a bad asthma attack, just coughs, but I don't really want to go down that road.

richard, my DD1 and I are both allergic to cats. She generally tolerates being around a cat for a night or two as long as she's taking allergy medication. If it's a longer visit, we get a hotel room or stay with a friend. Conversely, my mother was a smoker. It was a hard line for me that my kids didn't sleep there. It was just...gross...with everything built up over years. That didn't win me any daughter points, but I do think it was the right call.

richard unfortunately my DS has had to stop sleeping at my sister's when we visit bc she has a dog. We can load him up with allergy meds and, bless her, she super super dusts and vacuums and such before we get there, but if he sleeps there his eyes swell up and he gets a rash and cough.

I just heard DS on school telling his class that he once got cut by a fish's fin. This did not happen... He is very adamant that it did, so now I am questioning myself.

richard when DS1 was age 5 to like 13 we had to stop sleepovers. There just wasnt enough allergy meds to make the joy over take the suffering for him. He’s still allergic but since 13 or 14 he outgrew his worst symptom (hives) so we can dose him up enough that as long as he keeps hands away from his face and takes a shower when he gets home he’s good. Of course now he’s a teenager and has no desire to hang at Grandmas for more than a few hours.

If she’s dusting and vacuuming right before you get there, that makes it worse by stirring up the dust and dander. I’m not sure what’s ideal, but probably 1-2 days before is better. But sleeping over may never work for him, but maybe he can be more comfortable visiting for short times.

I’m writing a conservation plan for monarch butterflies in my region, and man, it’s equal parts interesting and depressing (I’m having to delve pretty deep into the current status and threats, risk of extinction, etc).
We really need to stop using pesticides and get serious about climate change. Monarchs could very well go extinct here during my lifetime… 😩
