addymac - I'm so sorry. It's beyond frustrating and no matter what you decide, you feel guilty anyway - either for taking the risk, or for disappointing family. We're in a similar boat with BIL's wedding (everyone seems cool with keeping N home, now I am the question and I honestly don't know what to do). Things were looking so good. It's so heartbreaking.

Man it’s just going to end up acting like the flu isn’t it? We’ll have to stay updated on our shots and hope we don’t get a breakthrough case or that the current vaccine is effective against the current variants. Blah. I do think that since it mutates much more slowly that the flu and is much less contagious than measles due to its larger size, once we can deliver vaccines across the globe, it may end up more rare and controlled than the flu. Maybe we need boosters every 5-10 years to keep up, like measles or whooping cough. But until vaccines are widespread enough that most people have at least partial immunity, we’re going to keep getting new variants because mutation rate correlated with transmission rate. Global distribution of vaccines needs to be a US priority to slow the evolution of variants, but of course that won’t go over well with the America First folks. 😞 Delta scares me a lot. It also brings the COVID endgame a lot closer because it is so much more contagious. Which isn’t a good thing, to be clear. In the race between distributing vaccines and pandemic spread, COVID just picked up a jet pack. Exponential growth of transmission is a bitch. Covid mortality will be much higher overall and we will reach the point where enough people have some immunity from either vaccination or prior infection sooner. The best thing we could do worldwide right now is to try to slow the spread with other mitigations (masks, distancing) while distributing the vaccines as fast as possible, especially to denser areas and areas with poor medical infrastructure. It’s so fucking depressing and maddening to think about it all.

WHAT A MESS. White House in talks with CDC to push for masks again. SCREAMS INTO THE VOID AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH www.washingtonpost.com/politics/biden-masks-delta-covid/2021/07/21/Also this quote During a CNN town hall meeting Wednesday evening, Biden suggested that in the fall, children under age 12 will have to wear masks in school, implying that it was unlikely that a vaccine would be approved for them by then. “The CDC is going to say that what we should do is everyone . . . under the age of 12 should probably be wearing a mask in school,” Biden said. “That’s probably what’s going to happen. This is a mess. The CDC should have never said what they did about school children. I wonder if it will change the protocols for our district. I certainly hope so. I was very careful last ngiht to mention the specific ages that can't be vaccinated.

I learned today that fox is mandating employees get vaccinated or wear masks and has created a vaccine passport for the company.

addymac that stinks. It is crazy how quickly feelings have changed. A few weeks ago, I was OK with taking my girls to a graduation party. Not happening now. And we are heading to the Beach next weekend. We decided no boardwalk, rides, etc. No eating at restaurants. Just going to keep with our own little bubble.

I learned today that fox is mandating employees get vaccinated or wear masks and has created a vaccine passport for the company. Oh I thought this was known. I’ve seen stuff on Twitter for awhile now saying that to be in the studio all those folks had to be vaxxed. So there are memes that show Tucker and all those fools saying “remember, these people are fully vaccinated”. I honestly assume the same is true for a lot of the politicians spreading anti vax stuff.

Something that is running through my head is that back in May I remember the fever pitch over vaccinated people still wearing masks (particularly politicians) and it was like “how do you convince people to get vaccinated if they can’t even ditch their masks” and “there has to be some incentive to getting vaccinated so if you tell people they don’t have to wear masks they will do it”. I MEAN. How about the incentive is the vaccine? What is even the problem with our American mentality that we can’t get the vaccine and also still wear the mask. I hate it. CDC did the no mask if vaccinated thing trying to use it as a carrot to increase vaccination rates. Big huge fail as it backfired in a predictable manner. Now people will be even less likely to mask up again if they say oops, nevermind, still need to wear a mask if you are vaccinated. Everybody needs to wear a mask.

And this quote CDC officials “always say they want to follow the science, but they did not prepare the public early on to say ‘we are looking at multiple factors, including how science fits in with reality and social science, and how it fits with expected and unexpected changes, especially sudden changes, where we have to turn on a dime to try to protect more people,’ ” Lanard said. But, she added, the CDC could gain credibility by directly acknowledging to the public the confusion and mixed messaging. Such a message could be: “We have delta. We are going to take a chance of enraging people who are already understandably enraged by our mask advice. … This is a new phase of the pandemic not being under control, but it’s better than the last phase.” YEAH IT'S A GOD DAMN PROBLEM ALRIGHT. Exactly. Please, follow the science! But psychology and sociology are sciences too!

CDC is sticking to current mask guidance. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is sticking with its guidance for now that only unvaccinated people need to wear masks to be safe, CDC Director Rochelle Walensky told reporters on Thursday. Asked about The Washington Post report that administration officials are rethinking its messaging on masks, Walensky said "we are always looking at the data as the data come in." But she said the CDC guidance hasn't changed and suggested that -- for now -- there's no need. . "Fully vaccinated people are protected from severe illness, and we've always said that communities and individuals to make the decisions that are right for them based on what's going on in their local areas," she said. She later added: "In areas that have high and low amounts of vaccination … if you're unvaccinated, you should absolutely be wearing a mask. If you're vaccinated, you have exceptional levels of protection from that vaccine, and you may choose to add an extra layer of protection by putting on your mask and that's a very individual choice." ... www.msn.com/en-us/travel/news/cdc-director-stands-firm-on-mask-guidance/ar-AAMrqgl?ocid=uxbndlbing

The new internet version of what HIPAA is makes me absolutely insane. My nanny told me yesterday that her friend brought her son with to her gym's childcare to work out earlier this week and noticed that the worker wasn't wearing a mask so she asked the woman if she was fully vaccinated. The woman got annoyed and just said "I'll go get my mask". Then my nanny's friend got a call from the MANAGER of the gym the next morning, telling her she violated the childcare worker's HIPAA rights and can't ask her that question.
I wanted to rage stroke out. I mean aside from how completely unprofessional it was, it is also 100% incorrect.

Ooof. I didn't realize that the CDC was only tracking breakthrough HOSPITALIZATIONS and not cases. Some data on break through vaccinations by vaccine type.
ETA not sure what she means by VAERS is a bust. That people aren't reporting through? The V-safe guy called me to make sure I had.

The first mistake with the unmask if you're vax thing was expecting people to behave in an upright manner. Especially those that are vehemently anti-mask and only wore one under the most extreme situations. Second the messaging from the CDC even within the past 6 months is just bad. If at the beginning or even six months ago they had said, this is what we know today so this is the direction we're going, that may change as new information comes to us or if conditions change. But the knee jerk thats happened is just causing distrust even among those that would be inclined to trust the CDC.

Polio and Smallpox never reached herd immunity. they were vaxed out of existence.
