H is already traveling, he ended up going to the Ozarks yesterday after he picked his truck up, to shadow another guy. He worked up 9 last night. Get that OT! Evie has a psychologist appointment at 3, so I have to leave work early to pull her from school so I can be here with her on the zoom. Then she has her GS bridging ceremony at 6, so it could be a busy afternoon/evening. klong11 how is the hand today?

mwhip my hand is doing better. I can open doors and put my own bra on again! There is still some pain, but not nearly as much as before. I kind of love this drug...too bad the possible side effects are so scary...internal bleeding and shit. Congrats on the bridging! Our troop decided to bridge at the end of summer so they can complete various daisy journeys they've started. How are E's shots going?

klong11, I'm glad you are feeling a little better. I hope you don't have RA. I always worry about it too since my mom has it so anytime my joints are achy I panic. mwhip, good luck with the appointment today. I hope it is a good fit.

Good morning.
I was up an hour before my alarm with M2. He started hacking so much he got sick in the bed. He felt warm, too. It seems he is feeling like he did Tuesday, so hopefully he will just hang out with the TV while I attempt to get some work around the house done.
We are leaving after lunch to meet the ILs. They were coming up Saturday to help out the last few days before the move, but when I told MIL about M2, she offered to come up early so I can go to my last scheduled work day. Bless her. FIL will wait until Saturday or Sunday to come over. Tonight I’m supposed to have dinner with my coworkers, too, so I don’t have to miss that either. I have a busy, long day ahead.

So remember how I was like "I would never" about tackle football? Well, I am eating my words. I don't want to get into a safety debate, so please don't tell me I am crazy. It has become apparent that C is a great football player and it is his passion so I started looking into it more in my town. I have done a lot of research and speaking to the head of pop warner here and other parents and found we have a really great program with good equipment, coaches, medical staff, and a low incidence of injury. There's actually more incidents for flag football in my town since the boys can be ruthless diving for flags or colliding without equipment.
So here is my conundrum. In the fall the plan was for C to start back with karate. It is 2 days a week and requires I leave work a little early those days. He seems excited about it but moreso to show off to two of his friends that started this year. Because of work and because I don't want to tire him out starting the 2nd grade, we can commit to either karate or football, not both.
So help me make a decision as to what to do. -This is the last year C would do tackle in a non competitive environment. Next season is the age group it starts to get competitive. So starting this year would have the advantage of him getting used to it and deciding if he likes it without the harder competition and more risk. It would also help us assess the program better before things get more challenging.
- Football opens us all up to more friends in town. Karate is in another town so there are only a few kids from our town and it doesn't have that same community feel.
- If he doesn't do karate this year, I don't know that he will ever start again unless he ends up disliking football. I don't see that happening. But if we are planning on trying tackle next year, he would have to drop karate then.
- He enjoys karate and I feel like we all got a lot out of it with some of the lessons they teach. He was also pretty good and it being more individual progress removes the frustration of your team not doing well but you doing well.
I feel like every decision I make lately is so hard! I don't need to make this one right away since football doesn't start until August 1st, but I am sick of wrestling with it and also want to give him the option of either if we decide to put football on the table.

nam2013 I have noticed so many family bikes like yours here lately. You must have great leg muscles biking the kids around. I saw a woman on my way back from drop off this morning with 3 kids in her bucket. I don't know how you do it!

wedding, I would let him try football. Keep karate. If next year he decides to stick with football, then he can drop karate. Make sure when that decision is made he understands that it is one or the other.

Make sure when that decision is made he understands that it is one or the other. I think this is where I am. If he chooses to stay only with karate will there be another “team” sport he will play? I am thinking about these things for my own kids and I want them to have activities that incorporate both individual and team needs.

wedding I also think he should stick with football. I like the idea of the team sport. Is there a different karate program he could do that is only 1 X per week so he could do both? I know around here there are like a dozen karate/taekwon do programs in this and the surrounding towns

wedding I would try football. People take breaks from martial arts and come back later all the time. I might see if there is a closer location. At our place you pay month-by-month and classes are 5 nights a week so you can come as often as you want or take breaks for other sports. As far as danger goes the most injuries with youth sports goes to... {Spoiler} cheerleading.

There is still a lot of drama leading up to it, but not having tears is a huge thing. wedding we talked to this same dr 2 weeks ago and Evie really seemed to like her. Hopefully that continues.

mamabear, growing up, I didn't try anything. I wanted to, but I was too freaking shy to even say I wanted to try anything. So, I put Cadence in whatever she says she wants, for at lease a trial. She is so hot and cold though. One day she loves swim and says she wants to move up to actual swim team, the next week she says she doesn't want to swim any more. Same with dance. Right now she is deciding if she wants to try violin again. She had decided against it, but now they are going back to in person in fall and she says she wants to try it again. My concern with that is she also wants to do the nutcracker and I'm worried the schedules might conflict once we get to Nov/Dec. We'll see.

On a related note, does anyone else feel pressure to find their kids "thing" so early on? L does little league, and is starting a more formal soccer in the fall, but there is also fall baseball which would be really beneficial skill wise , but we can't do both. And then I think what about football, or karate, or ninja warrior camp (he loves that show). He also takes swimming (or will again this summer ) and piano lessons once a week, so I dont want to overload him but I want to expose him to as much as possible! Dont even get me started on A and sports, dance. She's in preschool and I already feel like she's gotten less exposure due to the pandemic Yes. And this is one of those weird things I have mom guilt about. I played baseball and basketball every year in elementary and my kids haven't had that exposure to sports. We live in a decent-sized population area, but what is offered is often expensive, at times that are difficult with work/life, and located 20ish minutes away. If your kids can manage it I wouldn't feel the least bit bad about too much. I think there's nothing wrong with not having a particular focus if the kids enjoy a mish-mash. I mostly feel bad they don't get exposed to as much as I would like them to because of what is available here. I wanted to let the girls try piano and just find a high school kid in the area who could teach lessons at our house 1-2 times a week. I suggested MH inquire on NextDoor (he has the app, I dropped it because of all the crazies on it) and he insisted no, that the kids will go to his former piano teacher (about 15 minutes away). As per usual he said he'd take responsibility of getting them there and has never even looked into it. I really wish swimming was an option here because I view it as an essential skill and the kids love it. Our few pools suck, are insanely expensive for lessons, are 20 and 25 minutes away, and don't have much with Rona.

Started the day with bad attitudes. MH was a total dick last night so I didn't lift a finger this morning and decided he could do 100% of getting them ready for school. Cass was a complete turd yesterday at lunch and made sure to eat her dessert and chips, but nothing else. Maddie had issues earlier in the week with lunch so I told them I'm not making it and they can have school lunch (which is usually gross). I stuck with it. Mean mom over here. I reminded them to tell their teachers they need hot lunch. Cass mumbled she's not eating. Fine by me. So instead of wasting time making lunches I was able to complete some tasks I was behind on at work.

Is there a karate after school he can go to? I know a few places around here do it, so that may be a way for you to keep karate around for him.

mamabear I don’t really feel pressure to find their thing now, I just want them to participate in stuff they love and makes them happy. M is just naturally athletic and would truly be good at any sport. The kid is a natural, but we started with baseball and he loves it, so I think we’ve found his thing, but I still want him to try out some other sports before he goes all in on baseball. We may do basketball this fall because he likes to play that at home, too. I really want him to take drum lessons, but it’s not easy to find teachers/studios in the areas we have been in. I have looked. I, too, feel M2 is getting the short end of the stick, but he is just about to turn 4, so I know I’m really not that late. He doesn’t really show too much of an interest in sports yet and it may not be his thing, but I will try to get him in an activity this fall. His new school has karate, soccer, and swim so he’ll be doing at least two of those. He’ll start swim in July and one of the others in August/September.

Different country, different standards perhaps, but I don’t feel pressure to find my kids ‘thing’. But we don’t have the school teams, clubs etc. So if ds at 13 suddenly decides he likes hockey over baseball, we just sign him up at a local team.
I am feeling guilty about ds not playing baseball yet, last year we figured we’ll wait a year because of Covid, but two months ago when the season started i still wasn’t comfortable with him starting. Mainly because, no parents allowed, so I’d have to basically throw him over the fence and let him figure things out on his own...
Eta he does have swimclass every week, but 97% of Dutch kids do that, it’s almost mandatory.

mamabear as far as finding their "thing" I just wanted to add it's ok for kids not to find a "thing." I liked sports but was not athletic and eventually quit playing because I felt like I was letting the team down. I was the "good hustle" kid, aka the one who sucks at everything so the only compliment the coach could come up with was "good hustle." My "thing" eventually became good grades and newspaper when I was in HS because I was a nerd who could write, but obviously that opportunity didn't present itself until I was much older. Some kids are going to gravitate towards one particular thing, some will be a jack-of-all-trades, both are fine.

FFS it's not my day. I'm always in the office Friday, but every 4 weeks when I'm Lead I'm also supposed to be in the office Thursday. I completely forgot today and started out working from home. Cass has had a lot of pain issues with her ankle and I was up late with her. Tuesday night we were up til midnight while she was in the ER. She needs help with all ADLs so that's taking more time. I feel like the frazzled parent of a newborn but instead of being on mat leave I'm working full time.
So my boss texts my team to find out who is supposed to be in office. Super-religious dude doesn't miss a beat to immediately rat me out. I apologize and head down here. My internet was working just fine from home. I'm directly plugged into ethernet at the office and the fucking internet doesn't work. They do things to the buildings on post to weaken your wifi so I don't have a strong enough connection to get on through my phone.
So apparently the important thing is I'm in the fucking office but I won't be able to get anything done today. 😤🤬😤🤬

I saw a woman on my way back from drop off this morning with 3 kids in her bucket. I don't know how you do it! When it’s all three kids on/in there it is hard work, the bike weighs about 140lbs and all three kids combined about 100, so yes it’s heavy! So I have some serious calves and thighs of steel 😂😂😂. Most people over here have electric bikes these days, you still have to peddle, but not as hard. But they’re are about twice as much ($3000+ depending on brand) as a non electric bike 🤷🏼♀️. I still think it’s the best purchase we ever did!

He's athletic and coachable, so want get him in soccer and basketball...I think he's mostly worried he will want to play lax, which competes with baseball season😂. I'm also worried about N not doing anything besides zoom ballet that she dropped out of, but also realizing j is just now really into sports and is 7.5. I'm looking into soccer for her in the fall and pee wee lacrosse in a few years, and maybe field hockey and basketball.

wedding that is tough! If you can swing both for a year maybe try that? Or think about, if he chooses one over the other and then goes back to the one he didnt choose, would he be far behind his peers or easily catch up? Doing both would be too much for him and us. Football is 2 nights a week of practice and a Sunday game. Karate is 2 nights of practice. I feel like either he could end up behind if he skips a year. Although he just skipped over a year of karate because of the pandemic so he would be on a different path than others that went back sooner. guster, He will likely stick with little league for the spring/summer.
