We're shopping for a new car for H.
We want an SUV, I'm leaning towards buying (vs. leasing), and we're leaning towards new vs. used.
Do you have any SUVs that you love? We leased and loved the VW Atlas but I need to learn more about long-term reliability to see if I'd want to own one.

We have a 2020 Subaru Ascent and a 2021 Chevy Tahoe. Love them both.
If driving in snow is a concern of yours is highly suggest a Subaru. Nothing compares when driving in inclement weather.

I leased for a very long time. I've had multiple subarus in that timeframe. I finally purchased my Ascent so I could get out of the lease cycle and I'm happy with my decision!

We recently test drove every 3 row SUV - I'm not lying, every 3 row SUV. I really wanted one, but just didn't love any of them. I will say though that out of them all, the VW Atlas was our top choice. My brother has had a 2019 for 2 years now and it's still great. Unfortunately for us, it didn't give us quite enough space for 3 kids+50lb dog who road trip a ton and we ended up trading in our Honda Odyssey for a 2021 AWD Chrysler Pacifica. I'm in LOVE with it.
ETA: We are a 1 car family, so we really needed something that was for every thinkable situation.

As much as I love my Traverse, I’m disappointed at how well it’s held up. It has just over 70,000 miles on it and twice I’ve had to take it to the mechanic to get parts replaced that should have lasted much longer. The mechanic said that he had seen a lot of Traverses lately. And I’m good about car maintenance so it isn’t user error.

You know I will recommend the Subaru Ascent for life. Honestly, in searching for an SUV for H to fit 3 car seats (which I know isn't a concern for you, but it was the reason for our search), we almost went with another one (instead, we are going with a Volvo XC90 hybrid). ETA: We wanted something with second row captain's chairs as well, which may also not need a need or want for you. But that really limited our options.
Really the only reason we are going with the Volvo is that it is slightly more luxury (something H wanted) with some luxury features that H liked, and they have a hybrid option. It didn't even otherwise have all the features the Ascent had (top tethers in the 3rd row, way more USB ports and cupholders- cupholders are VERY IMPORTANT, OKAY??).

I am a big fan of Toyota/Lexus. I drove my GX for 100k miles over 6.5 years and it was still completely flawless when I traded it in. Not a single rattle.
I’ve only had my new car for 6 months and can already tell it’s not made nearly as well.

I was between a 21 Atlas R-Line and the 21 Honda Pilot special edition. I really loved the Atlas but went for the Pilot because Honda was willing to give me a better deal and I was concerned about the reliability of the Atlas long term. I love my pilot and it is my second one (first was a lease but we bought this time).

I also considered and test drove the MDX but it was considerably smaller and just wouldn’t work for us.

Yeah, we turned the Atlas in because I was also worried about long-term reliability, but I don't know that I have any concrete basis for that. But we both really loved it. I'd be open to getting another one if I'm convinced it won't need costly repairs in the 5-7 year range.

What are your must haves in terms of bells and whistles, mpg, etc? H is a picky beast. And we tend to have champagne taste on a beer budget for cars. We don't care much about MPG (it will be driven less than 5 miles a day). We want some of the more upscale safety and wow features. Apple Car Play is a must.

I would look at Honda/ Acura or Toyota/Lexus knowing that you could drive them forever if you wanted or needed to.
My hondas are so cheap to run and I've heard the same about toyota. I'm hesitant to get anything else because I like to keep my cars forever and I'm a cheap bitch

thatgolfb, my dream has always been a volvo. H thinks they're mom cars and I don't think will entertain it. But I'm plotting an XC40 purchase from their overseas program to get a free European vacation out of the deal.

I’m very pro-Subaru, and someone mentioned recently to me that they’re doing favorable financing right now (I’m sure everyone is, though). What’s important to you in a car? H would rather walk than drive a Subaru but I know they're amazing for the snow, which is a big deal for us. I just can't get him to even consider it.

Just routine maintenance and snow tires so I'm going with it

I just felt the Honda would be more reliable long term. This is despite owning a used Jetta in college and a new Passat after college with no issues. You might be able to negotiate an extended warranty as part of the purchasing process. Tell them your concerns and if it’s a tipping point for the sale they may being willing to make it happen. I know the r-line was in big demand when I was shopping so I didn’t have much/any room for negotiation there.

I never considered Nissan before DH convinced me to test drive. I love it. I have the Rogue Sport SV. Good price point for us with all of the things I wanted: Apple Car Play, heated seats and steering wheel, remote start. Plus it has ProPilot Assist and all of the safety alerts. It's only a year old but we've not had a single issue.

joey you mean like the ones in my 11 legacy that were built into the door all the way at the front so you had to lean over to grab a drink? So annoying.

I have a new Mazda CX9 that I will run into the ground, but I honestly preferred my Jeep Cherokee. I wish I wouldn't have traded it in. So my vote is not Mazda.

I love my Audi Q5, but it is a smaller SUV, so depending on what you need, it may not be right. But it goes very fast and I like that.

I have no experience other than Subaru on newish models and I love my Subaru. But I know many coworkers drive CRVs/pilots and love them. Some of them are 12 plus years old with little to no unexpected maintenance.

We just bought an Acura MDX and love it. We were a Honda family forever and ever, but couldn't pass it up. It does have a Honda engine, which helped sway us.If we didn't want the 3rd row seating, we would have looked at the RDX as well.
