I talked to both my boys (6 and 8) about why I’m keeping them home Wednesday. My six year old said he didn’t mind going to school, lockdown drills aren’t that bad. And I wanted to cry 😭 he shouldn’t think those are normal This just makes me so sad. My oldest will go to kindergarten in Sept and he’s already experienced two “shelter” drills at his goddamn preschool. I appreciate that this is happening but it breaks my heart that he’ll be used to this before he can even read a book. I just keep thinking that even though Columbine happened while I was in middle school, the way in which schools practice for intruders is so different now. I don’t think we ever did those kinds of drills. All I remember is feeling scared at the idea of a tornado when we did tornado drills and hid our heads under coat racks. A tornado drill! It seems so quaint now. Columbine was my Senior year of high school and I was in CO. We were in some form of lock down daily until graduation

Explaining what we were doing and why, delicately, to 5 year olds was really difficult. I was volunteering in my son’s kindergarten class during an active shooter drill last year. I hid with the teacher and 17 five year olds in the supply closet for 20+ minutes. She amazed me. She managed to keep them so quiet and calm the entire time. Teachers deserve all the money.

My hope is the the military presence and the arrests will deter further violence in DC on Wednesday. Not to say we won’t see violence in the future, but hopefully they decide it’s too risky on Wednesday. Getting Parler and other platforms shut down has decentralized their communication, which has to help in the short-term. I also think the arrests are helping. These dunbasses really thought they aren't criminals. dingdingding!

I know I've said I'm unsettled and nervous about Wednesday but that's my general stasis lately, not an indication that anyone else should be worried. I've been operating at a hum of general unease since the 6th but that's a response to past events, not an overwhelming fear about future events. Think of it this way: if you've ever been in a bad car accident, it's really, really hard to get behind the wheel again afterward. The likelihood of you getting into another collision is probably miniscule, but your brain responds through the lens of the past trauma, not a rational assessment of the potential danger. It's understandable to be worried and scared. I am. But there are many reasons to trust in this. Joe and Kamala wouldn't agree to this ceremony if they didn't feel they were protected. First Doug can and has physically tackled anyone trying to fuck with Kamala. Be vigilant but don't be freaked out. this has been my motto for nearly a year now: Be prepared, not paranoid.

We do evacuation drills with the kids once a year where we go to a local place we would escape to if we needed to leave the school. The kids aren’t aware of this, but part of the drill is practicing the different “teams” of teachers and admin. One team with the kids (I have a homeroom so I’m in this group). Another team practices coming in to collect kids as their parents come to get them. The third team can’t really do a real practice, because their job is to tell parents that their kids aren’t there. This is the social worker, school psychologist, etc. Some of the people on this team have kids in the school themselves. I have trouble even thinking about it, I can’t imagine training for it and coming up with the right script to use with parents whose child is missing, injured, or worse.

I've been absent from the news all day but as soon as I told H about the evacuation he had the same thought of well now everyone knows the evacuation plan. And I saw this. I think this must be what all of our crazy friends/family/random people we know have been taking about.

Within the last week, they learned how to make their profiles private and I am only seeing half of the crap they post. Or they held off for a bit?

Also love the specific call out to Sheetz, like their closure is super important. ::rolls eyes so hard::

Why do I know more about opsec just from reading Tom Clancy novels and some comments from military spouses on various forums (mostly, can't talk, won't talk, don't know anything anyway), than all these folks spreading the word of stocking up, etc. Isn't it hard to have a sneak attack when you've openly shared the plans with half the world?
BTW, what is Sheetz? I'm guessing some regional gas station chain?

I could see if you live in a very small town that Sheetz could be the only place you can get groceries without trekking half an hour or more, but without context, all I could think was, "mama needs her hot ham and cheese!!"

I highly recommend reading the replies to that tweet. Good stuff.
Like, it’s obvious the Gab post is a Russian bot - “tea guest” and reference to AK-47s, which the US military would never use. But these dummies will believe it. Lolz.

I don’t know what a Sheetz is and we don’t have one. My god that must mean the end of the world. Or I’ll be fine. It really a toss up.
I should be concerned about ripping that tub out of my master bath.

I am happy for those that can keep it together. I'm not there 🤷♀️ I'm not saying I'm right (in fact, I have an anxiety disorder and people should explicitly not use me as an example). That said. I don't think anyone is going to succeed in an overthrow. I have faith in those in charge of all this. I also believe shit is gonna to be attempted. Just like the assault on the Capitol didn't *work*, but terrible things still happened. I don't think being in that place necessarily means anyone is paranoid or freaking out. It actually seems like a very reasonable expectation to believe we're not quite done with this rollercoaster and prepare ourselves accordingly. Mmmhmm. Even if we don't see it happen on live TV, I think there's going to be a report that comes out in a few years about what was going down behind the scenes that we didn't know about.

We've all put in work and did our parts to make this happen. We DESERVE to feel relief and happiness for a few fricking moments.
