I mean, they kind of have to pass it don’t they? It feels like political suicide to not? If they don’t do you all think it will be easier to flip the Georgia seats?
There will never be a floor vote.
Rand Paul will object to Unanimous consent and Mitch will just ignore it.
The fact that the WH statement after Trump signed the first bill said "the Senate will start the process to vote..." on the $2,000 indicates to me that Mitch didn't promise him a vote anytime soon. So I agree that he'll try to run out the Trump clock.
It'll be interesting to see if the NDAA gets him to the table on the extra money or not. I honestly don't know.
The library just delivered the audiobook of Obama’s book. I just need to find time to sit and listen to it. Best part is that it is narrated by the author himself.
I loved listening to Becoming since Michelle narrated. My H surprised me with Obama’s new book for Christmas and he knew I’d probably listen so I asked why he got a hard copy and he said he knew I wanted a bookshelf and it seemed like a good one to put on it.
Tiffany Haddish narrated her book too, I cannot imagine someone else reading it. I love when the author narrates this book, but I also understand it isn’t everyone’s forte. There are a few book narrators that I will search to see what else they have read.
I just watched a fascinating and so sad documentary on theo von boven, the UN and human rights committee and disappearances in Argentina, uruguay, paraguay and other countries. And fuck, i know about the disappearances vaguely. The 70s-80s was such a time of authoritarian violence (mostly supported by the us) in south america, hut seeing the extent of it and how few people cared. Phew. Gonna watch some bake off now to mellow out.
This made me remember that earlier this summer, my friend found out she was adopted, from Chile, in the early 1980s. Naturally, I googled, and found a few things - including small news stories. She told me she doesn’t want me to share anything I found with her; she is still processing. Anything about the Children of Silence in that?
H got me this for christmas and I didn’t even ask for it. He’s a treasure.
I’m on page 8. The preface alone is stunning. I’ve already teared up a bunch. I’m sure this has been covered here, but I highly recommend. Reading it and knowing that when he wrote it and the preface that he didn’t know Biden was going to win...just every second knowing that his legacy is returning in some form as I read it fills me with so much hope.
I was really unhappy with the Obama administration over some things like the drone strike program (and I'm not nuts--obviously I know he was 99% wonderful and OF COURSE a million times, to the twelfth power, better than He Who Shall Not Be Named) and reading direct words from Obama about the decision making that went into those incredibly tough calls don't erase my frustration but they ....humanize them?
Yes! So much this. I am very eager to get to the parts where he did things I did not appreciate since right now I am just in the “we are having babies! I won the senate!” part.

Oh yes. There were lots of imprisoned women who were kept alive until they have birth and then we're killed. The babies were adopted or really given away.
The documentary included some heartfelt reconnections with grandmother's of those adopted out babies.

It was so devastating to watch the documentary I saw about this years ago. Like it’s imprinted in my brain, i can see the grandma fighting to find their grandbabies. There was an organization created by the grandmas searching for their grandbabies because they knew they existed and were taken from the moms and then the moms were killed. So awful.

Yeah I bawled when the one grandma was reconnected with her now adult grandson.

I’m going to have to look into that too. What is the name of the documentary you watched My understanding was the Children of Silence (in Chile) were babies of unmarried or poor women. They would give birth and then would be told their baby died and then would be sold to {unsuspecting} foreigners. It has been difficult to find information.

It came out in 2019 and is called The Subversives.
NDAA override vote by Senate will happen tomorrow.
I don't know if that's going to happen as Bernie just objected to the NDAA vote after McConnell objected to the $2,000 vote.
Speculation on Twitter is that Mitch is going to pair the $2,000 vote with the Section 230 vote and some "voter fraud" BS. That way Trump gets his vote on the $2K but it makes it harder to pass.

Question for my own self-interest: If they pass then $2000 stimulus checks after Jan 1, would that mean eligibility would be determined with the 2020 taxes?

I think they aren’t ***supposed to be taxed. At least that’s what I thought for the first round.
Loeffler has flipped on the 2k. Standing out there talking about Democrats are playing games and she supports the prez suggestion to help the American people

As I understand it*, eligibility for both WILL be based on 2020 taxes, but for the purposes of getting them out they're based on 2019. Once you file 2020 taxes you'll repay if you're over the limit but got the stimulus, or you'll get more back if you didn't receive/had it reduced based on 2019 taxes. And neither are included as taxable income. *not a tax professional

Ok. So my SO put me down as a dependent for 2019 because I SAH. So I guess my question is, if for he files for 2020 and doesn’t do that again, would I retroactively get the money from the last stimulus and then also this one?
Also, can I just say how fucked it is that adult dependents got nothing. That encompasses a lot of disabled and/or elderly people. And not all of them get disability or SSI to be eligible via that route.

So so fucked. But yeah from my reading (and I could be wrong) you'd then be eligible for both and get it as part of your refund.
And what's amazingly stupid is that they don't even understand what Section 230 actually does.
Yeah I thought section 230 kept large compa irs from being liable for individuals communications- so do they want to repeal it so Trump can sue twitter?
