This thread inspired by This American Life, "Notes on Camp." Did you go to summer camp? Will you send your kids to summer camp? And go.

I did not go to summer camp. It was definitely out of my parents' price range. I lived super close to upper middle class neighborhoods growing up, though, so a lot of my close friends went to camp and I wished I could, too. We will probably send E to camp. DH has very fond memories of his summer camp experience. I was looking at prices last night and WHOA.

I went to day camp and have mostly fond memories. I almost went to sleep away version of it but chickened out. Hello anxious child.
Anytime I swim in a lake it reminds me of camp.

I went. I loved it. I was all in. I worked there for a summer in college and some of the charm wore off, lol.
I'll send my kids if they want to go. I'll probably try to sell it - I do think it did a lot for me in terms of making friends, physical challenges, and conquering homesickness.
My camp felt pretty different than TAL's depiction - but it was definitely its own little world.
I'm also already excited at the prospect of getting rid of my kids for 2-4 weeks. Only 10+ more years!!

Less than 10 years, OR. I saw a few last night that started at age 6.

My girls did a 2 hour dance camp for 4 days. Does that count??
I remember doing basketball camps and band camp (omg this one time, at band camp, Llol *eyeroll*)
Whether we do it depends on whether the kids want to and why, how much it costs, and where we live at the time. Where I live now is mostly day camps. And overnight camps are pricey. But there are some church camps where I grew up that are totally reasonable. As well as sports camps. I think camps like this are great for personal development.

Did not go to summer camp. In middle school we went to a science camp thing for a week as part of the curriculum and I basically didn't eat the whole time because I was so anxious/homesick.

But it is seriously like thousands of dollars guys Yep. 24/7 Room/board/activities/insurance/lifeguards/whatever the heck else, I can't even imagine! From working there, I know that no one is a millionaire from this. Not even the director. I think it's worth it. If we'll be able to swing it; well, I've got ten years to find out (Not sending my kids to overnight at age 6, grumps. Well, probably not). I'm gonna keep using rags instead of paper towels and saving every go-green-penny to do it (If they want). Talk about cult lifestyle - I'm already thinking, well, of course my kids will go to MY camp.

I went to church camp for many summers. It's usually only 1-2 weeks though. Girl Scout camp too.
The other kind of camp wasn't really a thing for anyone I knew growing up.

Where I am on vacation right now is right down the road from a camp that my fourth grade class spent 4 days at and was amazing. I'm so jealous every time we drive by of the kids there and wish I hadn't been such a scardey cat. Of course M is totally following in my anxious footsteps so I'll just save the money for college.

I went as a kid to both day camps and a couple overnight camps when I was older. Both my parents worked FT so they had to do something in the summertime. I have fond memories of nature camps, soccer camps, and music/art camps. I would love for the girls to experience those things as well.

I went to day camp all summer and it was punctuated with overnight camps (2 weeks to a month out of the summer over about 4 years). The girls will definitely do day camp because we both work and will hopefully do overnight camps too. I just looked at the rate for the overnight camp that DH went to as a kid (and my niece goes to now) and it's $410/week. That's super doable for a couple weeks, compared to the insanity that is daycare. I loved my camps as a kid and hope my girls do too.

I went to Girl Scout camp. It was a wilderness camp and I loved it so much. Most programs were 1-2 weeks, but I did counselor in training and a couple years as a counselor (camp name Zippy). It's where I learned to build a fire, primitive camping, canoeing. I became certified as a lifeguard there. I sing camp songs to M every night.
M won't go to my camp bc it was sold a few years after I stopped going, but if she wants to go to camp, I'll definitely make it happen.

I only went to sports related day camps and 1 sleep away basketball camp with my high school team every summer. I don't know if we'll send our kids but if they want to, I'd consider it. Sleep away camps are really popular around here so if we're here long term it'll probably be more likely. Growing up, the only kids I know that did sleep away camps were Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts.

I went to day camps, which I loved. My husband went to overnight camp and he thinks it's great for kids. I haven't looked into the cost but overnight camp is definitely something I'd like our kids to do. I think it's great for socializing and building confidence learning new skills.

I went to a week-long girl scout camp one summer with a friend and I loved it. Crafts + Horses.
I hope my kids will want to go away to camp for a week or two in the summers. I wouldn't feel comfortable sending them until they were older, maybe like 12? Maybe.
My sister has worked at a few kids summer camps in Vermont and Colorado, and she tells stories about the fun things the kids do and I want my kids to experience that.

Well let's just say that the whole let's wait until we are married thing was certainly being ignored by her and many friends. (This was like age 18-20 ish). But yea. I was the worst influence in her life. Not that nice religious boy she met at camp. Lololol. Along with what I assume would be normal drinking by college kids on summer nights off. But still.

Yeah, I kept looking to see if I missed something. For comparison I just poked around to find another Vermont camp. This one looked "fancy" and included horseback riding and cost $1500 for a single "rookie week." Or there was the 7 week $10,000+ option. Cost aside, while I'm a huge fan of summer camp, there's no way that I'm sending them away for 7 weeks. There is more to summer than camp.

Just church camp in grade school and sports camp in high school. Pretty sure we will do a camp for our kids when they are old enough.

I wonder if the fancy camp is the one my sister worked at in VT. I don't know the name but a couple movie star's kids were in attendance. And the sessions were several weeks long.

I went to Girl Scout camp when I was a kid and really enjoyed it. I went to music camp in late middle/ early high school and it changed my life. I went back and worked at one of them during college. A large part of why I'm a music teacher now is because of experiences at music camp.

I never went to summer camp, but worked at a day camp. I wasn't impressed, but I did winter camp with 4-H and absolutely loved it. I always wanted to go to horse camp and wasn't allowed so I will likely try to send my kids if they want do something like that.

I did week- or two week-long overnight camps at Girl Scout summer camp every a kid till I was 12 or so, but never longer than that. One year it was horse camp, which was awesome. I had friends who were camp counselors at Girl Scout camp and would spend the whole summer there, but the camp wasn't really set up for campers to stay the whole summer. I've worked at a few day camps, too, one with Cub Scouts and one at the Zoo. And we did lots of campouts with Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts.
J spent pretty much every summer after a certain age at camp (and also went to boarding school). He went to Jew Camp and Theater Camp, mostly. I don't know if I would send Nugget away for months to camp, but I would definitely like her to do a week or two every summer. There is a Jew camp in our area associated with our synagogue that she'll definitely go to, and I'd like to get her into Girl Scouts (I was a scout until 11th grade).

When I was 10ish I went to Girl Scout camp for a week . My best friend was supposed to go with me. She backed out at the last minute. That week did not go well.
I went to many overnight sports camps when I was older. For me that was much more fun.
