klong11 We have a holiday tomorrow, too. I'm annoyed. We just had a holiday. This one was recently announced. We have tomorrow off, too (teacher planning day, I think?) and Veteran's Day, as well. DH leaves overnight tmrw so it's kind of nice the kids will have one more day with him. I'm sending them Wednesday, regardless, b/c it'll be a good distraction, and I want to keep them in a routine and not give them too much time to dwell, etc.

klong11 We have a holiday tomorrow, too. I'm annoyed. We just had a holiday. This one was recently announced. We were supposed to have one a couple weeks ago, but they changed it. And now they are using it as a day to deep clean the school since they had those 2 covid cases.

klong11 and tgrimes what is the holiday? Besides Election Day, which is a big deal, I guess I've never considered it a holiday since no business close for it. Ignore me...I should have kept reading.

trtlcrzy yeah, I think it's a teacher in-service type day, but they will not be on campus.

They use a lot of our schools as voting places (why can't I think of the actual word?) so that's why I assumed schools are closed.

Just for happy birthday at was $85. Each additional letter after that costs something. I got both kids names & MH’s, minus a few letters since you can reuse them. My total was $156.96. There are places you can rent the signs for 24 hours here and they charge between $100-$150. So I figured I got a good deal since I get to keep them and reuse them!

Kids can't be there for security reasons, even pre-covid. They used to use our elementary schools, I remember that when I was young. But at some point, that changed, I'm not sure why. We now vote in a church, when we do in person, and I remember people complaining about keeping religion out of politics or vice versa. Like, it's just a big open building they volunteered for use. Quit over thinking it.

Does anyone else get anxious whenever you get invited to something? DD was invited to a day out in NYC for a friend’s birthday this weekend. I know she would love it but between Covid and potential fall out from election results, I had to say no. I also did not allow her to go to a 6 hour party at the home of a friend whose parents I never met.

kim22 extremely 😕. Parents of a friend of ds texted me yesterday that they wanted to take ds and his friend to a science museum as a birthday treat got their son. I feel uncomfortable with a play date (which we allow once in a while...) but a very tactile museum in Amsterdam where number are exploding, I had to decline. Which feel crappy, because I know he’d love it.
I can think of a lot of other examples, but this one was te latest.
ETA I know and trust these parents, I just don’t trust all the other people in the museum, public transport etc.

With the exception of cagoldi we’ve turned down any public outing things. Almost all other play dates have either been at our house or with friends we know that have taken Covid seriously.
Im super nervous about driving to Oklahoma for Thanksgiving but it will make my parents happy.

I don’t think we’ve ever had school on election day — either when I was a kid, teaching, or with my own children. Even if they don’t use that particular school for a polling place, it’s always been a conference day for teachers (it usually starts the night before) and asand as I type this my husband is upstairs from 5 to 7 on back to back zoom calls with seniors’ parents.

We haven’t done any outings with other people. I didn’t even go to the beach this year because I didn’t want to try to keep the kids separated from the other families. They play together on the playground at school, but they are masked, and asked to try and keep distance between them (as much as they can). I don’t think I’d feel comfortable with any kind of prolonged play date/outing at this point in time.

kim22 yeah, I probably wouldn't accept an NYC invite right now, mostly b/c of the election fallout. I've seen where businesses are already boarding up there and other cities in fear of more rioting, etc. I haven't kept track of Covid #s up there so I can't say whether I would be worried about that part of the equation. Extended play-date with strangers would also be a no. With that said, our kids have been playing (90% outdoors) with all the neighbor kids, and we've done indoor gatherings with family, as well as museums, airports/planes, etc with masks on. I've eaten at restaurants with family and girlriends. Our local science/history museum here has covered or removed high-touch/hands-on activities. We each received a stylus that we used to push any buttons, etc. necessary as part of the exhibits, then those went in a 'dirty' container on our way out to be sanitized. Masks were required and capacity was limited. It felt safe, but admittedly I am pretty low-key.

I'm so sad for my kids to miss things but I've also had to say no to a lot.

I went into the office today to host our monthly new hire orientation. It’s the first one I’ve done in person since March! Open enrollment also started today so I was totally swamped, hence checking in just now.
After that I went to see C’s halloween parade at his school. They postponed it from Fri to today bc of the weather. But in comparison, they should’ve had it Friday. It was freezing cold and super windy today.
I remember all the public schools would close on election days since some of them were used as polling places. They’d just give the entire county off

My niece (highschool age) is pretty concerned about it. There have already been cases at her school and my brother(her dad) is a teacher there too, so it's all very stressful for them. They've decided to forgo Thanksgiving at my mom's and stick to just the two of them.

Some of the schools are used for that here but I think it’s the ones with community centers or other ways of blocking the general public from the students. My polling location is a church though, it just happens to be the one that S goes to preschool at.
