I almost wish I had started Josie in the twos this past year, and then I wouldn't have that issue. She'll be in the fours this year and will "graduate" from this preschool in June. Is there another preK class at all? Sure. There are lots of options. Also, I guess kindergarten registration is a ways away ( it's in February/March here). A lot could change by then.

@snoop, we don't have you PK here, but I hear good things about it from my friends who have sent their kids through it. I'm probably stressing over nothing. I know academically she'd be fine, and that maturity will come with in time.
I just find it odd that just a few states (mostly on the East Coast, I think) have such a late cut off while the rest of the country stays with the start of the school year.

Honestly, I'd probably just do what the majority does in the area I live in. My 2 best friends from high school were the youngest in the class (didn't turn 18 until July and aug following graduation) and they did just fine. Someone has to be the oldest and someone has to be the youngest.

J will be almost 6, so he will be in his new class for 2 years. Thankfully they will keep taking our money until kids are ready for k (most DC kids leave since public Pre-K is offered, but not necessarily for MD/VA). Almost his whole class is moving up, but I am kind of sad he's not staying in his current class because we adore the teachers. They move one kid up at a time and a mom friend said it's okay, but they miss the old class already. The big kids seem so big, and they play rougher too😥.

klong11, I'd be really upset about inconsistent enforcement of rules too. Our dc told us that only have flexibility in moving classrooms by one month before/after their birthday and it depends on parent request/readiness/available space. So far it looks like it's being fairly enforced for everyone, I'd certainly have a chat with the teacher like you're planning.

I cried a few times at work but I definitely tried not to. It was frowned upon in my industry. Calimocho, it's a rough week, do whatever you need to to survive and don't be hard on yourself.

The good thing about Cadence's preschool/dc is they have the Pre-K, then they have epk, which is the excellerated prek for kids like her with late birthdays. It is just going to suck next June when her friends get to have their graduation and she won't. Ugh. She even asked me why she couldn't just have her birthday now to go to Mrs. B's class with her friends.

The district I taught in had a similar program, but it was between kindergarten and first - The kids called a pre-1st; it was basically advanced kindergarten. I don't know why I didn't think that there would be programs that would be between pre-K and K.

I know we've talked about kindergarten cut offs before, but I think about the decision to send Josie or hold her back at least once a week. We are an December cut off. Me too! I hate that I have a choice and it's not made for me. We are sending O to UPK at the elementary school. If he does well he will go to kindergarten next year. If need be, he can repeat kinder. We have transitional Kindergarten here for kids born in the Fall (Sept 1st cutoff). He'll start Pre-K this October. I need to get over to the school and find out what to do about testing in to the Transitional K program since our closest elementary is now a magnet school. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I don't have the emotional energy to update after the doctor visits today. I needed a biopsy and I was not prepared for that. So I should know more when we get those results in two weeks.
Just so nobody is alarmed, we're definitely not doing a biopsy for anything cancer related.

M will be starting PreK-3 in less than a month. I know he is ready. I am not. Just the fact that he'll be at an elementary school, not a day care, has me all in my feels. 😭

Hugs cagoldi. Sorry for the rough day. csho pimento cheese...shredded cheddar, pimentos, various seasonings, mayo. It makes a spicy spread you can put on just about anything. It's a staple at gatherings down here. I make my own for parties, but for just eating day-to-day we love Palmetto brand (in the refrigerated section). Our grocery store and WalMart in Maine has it, oddly enough, so you might be able to find it where you are. www.pimentocheese.com/mobile/products.html

guster K is full-day here in the public schools, 8:30-3. I went to private school and K only went til 1:30, which I would prefer. 8 hours seems like such a long day for a kindergartener :/ Here in FL there is a 'voluntary pre-kindergarten' program (VPK), offered at some public schools and most private preschools. It's for kids who are 4 as of Sept 1, so B would do that the '18-19 school year if we were going to be here. Some schools offer it 5x/week mornings, and others offer 3 full days/week.

Over here you usually start school the day after you turn four, but attendance isn't mandatory until 5. Most schools have mon/tue/thur 08.30-14.30 and wed/fri 08.30-12.30. Ds is going to a Waldorf type school that starts with 5 mornings, but they advice to not send your kid on Wednesday until 5, because it's a lot for them. Cut off for the first grade is 31/12 (used to be 9/1). I don't like the idea of a 5.5yo in first grade, they have the rest of their life to be serious, education for a 4/5yo should imo be play based and focussing on emotional development too.

I didn't turn 18 until December of my first semester of college. I was happy to be the youngest and get the hell out of high school. People here also redshirt but we aren't planning to unless his teachers think he'll need it. MH had an August bday and was also the youngest.
