I was asking bc I was wondering why this has come up now if you maybe already had braces. I’ve had them and years later I feel like my overbite is back. I’ve entrained braces for like a minute to fix it and feel like I’d rather just live w an overbite than go thru all that again, esp when everything else is straight! (Obv no offense to your new venture.)

(Obv no offense to your new venture.) No offense at all. I have wanted braces for a long, long time. I just decided a few weeks ago that I wanted to pursue it. I wish my parents would have done it when I was a teenager but they didn’t do It so here I am. From what I hear, correcting a problem after you’ve already had braces isn’t as big of an ordeal. You may even be able to do Invisalign or something. General consults at orthodontists are free so it wouldn’t hurt to go see what they have to say.

Military ladies.... Anyone want to tell me about their experience dealing with working/having spouses work for the military/fed govt? Base/branch preferences? MH may pursue a tactical training position. I am not opposed because right now college sports is suffering and this may offer us a chance at stability/security until we get out of this pandemic. I don’t know if I should PDQ this. Feel free to PM me. flamingo inthekitty and maybe yummeecookee? And vino even though you are in a different country

Hi from the car dealership! Hoping to pull the trigger today and hope I don’t go home empty handed since it’s an hour and half drive from home. My sister has the boys and I just need to be home in time to pick N up from school, so let’s hope this doesn’t take too long.

lahdeedah, is it a contract job or would he qualify for federal benefits (i.e. pension)? I can't speak to the spouse thing but as a federal employee I am very happy. I work for a great place and the pension alone makes it so worth it. The other benefits are good as well. DH did a short stint working at the VA and he had a really hard time assimilating to the bureaucracy of a federal agency. Sometimes things take longer and there's more hoops to jump through to get stuff done. I enjoy a process and love rules so it works for me. He didn't so he moved on after a year. My dad was in the Coast Guard and now works for the Dept of Homeland Security. Moving every three years as a kid was really tough. My dad is sitting pretty financially though. He has his CG pension and will also have one from his current job. He also invested wisely in his TSP (Govt 401k). He could retire now at 63 and live a pretty nice life.

lahdeedah , I'm assuming as a civilian position? In general, for active duty positions, Air Force is the best. Better funding and treatment. Followed by Navy, then Army. As a civilian it wouldn't have as strong of an impact and particularly in the sports programs they throw money and support there so they'd probably be treated well with less bureaucracy inherent in the rest of the military. It's the military academies where the teams come from so West Point (NYC) for the Army, Annapolis, Maryland for the Navy, and Colorado Springs for the AF. Football, right? Not sure what pay scale the position would be in, but for GS (General Schedule) federal positions, once past the trial period, it's basically impossible to be fired (for better or worse). So it might allow more stability. ETA: Looking back I think I misunderstood, would this not be in sports? If that's the case, AF or Navy if he can. They move less usually. Location is never a guarantee (don't believe recruiters), but it can be bargained sometimes for the first position. As far as being a federal employee I'm happy with it overall. Yes there's some nonsense, but there is at any job. I like the stability.

lahdeedah from a fed govt employee perspective...it’s hard to argue with a good govt job. The stability is nice (except for the occasional govt shutdown). Yes, there is sometimes more red tape, and bs to deal with...but my experience is that often times jobs (though not always) the pay will be better than outside the govt. for example MH as an LEO makes a lot more $$ than your city and state officers. Also, the benefits are great and like someone else said...a lot more stability.

lahdeedah, well mh took a Fed job as a DoD civilian after the recession in 2008. It was sort of a means to bide time until the economy became more stable. He ended up staying for 8 years! So it was a good move and a positive overall. He was able to get his MBA fully paid for and of course we had our idyllic PCS to Oahu (altho he did not like his work location and preferred his east coast location much better - strictly referring to office space here, w out naming names). Thankfully there is a need for HR in pretty much every business so I didn’t worry about finding work. That was a big plus for our major moves. I will say that it did stunt me a bit professionally as I took a huge pay cut after we left DC. And the job I took in HI, didn’t offer me much growth, so coupled w maternity leave, my job history wasn’t looking too hot when I began my job search in MD. Just things to think about if yh takes any positions that will require moves.

It was okay! Ds had a birthday party straight from school (parents took him with them), so I didn’t have to pick him up. I had almost a full day with dd, which was nice. We had a special lunch (nice rolls), played board games and ate a chaussure au pomme. Dh came home with seriously beautiful flowers. Currently heating the tapas for our dating anniversary dinner.

I think a federal employee because all his contacts talk about how great it is. Good hours- they won’t let you work over 40- great benefits, etc, etc. Thanks for this! The most beneficial thing I thought about was pension. Hopefully he qualifies for it if we do it. ETA: it’s not federal. Contract. womp womp

Yes there's some nonsense, but there is at any job. I like the stability. No not in sports. He would train the soldiers(?) marines?. He has talked to a couple recruiters and has two contacts in these positions that love it and say it’s so much better than sports world for families. Right now they have open positions in VA beach, Coronado , Tacoma, Fayetteville NC. There is apparently a lot of positions opening Oct 1st. I was asking Mh if he gets to pick and he says he thinks he would get to tell them his top 3 choices. Thanks for the tip about not believing the recruiters. We don’t want to be stuck out in the middle of nowhere. Location is our biggest factor I think. As long as we can get close to a decent city, I would be in. I guess that’s not guaranteed.

We would have a good chance of him having to take a pay cut now with sports taking a hit because of COVID. We could curb that loss if we do a government job. Thanks for the input!

I have been lucky to find work at the places we have been so far, but if we get stuck at one of the bases in the middle of nowhere, work for me may be hard to find. I risk that now with the frequent moves of the sports world, but like I said, I’ve been lucky so far.

Morning. I can’t remember if I updated on the orthodontist appts yesterday. He said he doesn’t want to do anything right now for H, just see her back in 9 months. She will definitely have crowding. For me he said I need braces for 2 1/2 years. I have a canine tooth that is still up in the gum so I will need to see an oral surgeon. He said they put a gold chain on it and pull it down gradually. If it won’t come down then they will pull it instead. But, we found out that DH’s insurance only covers orthodontics until 26, super lame. Luckily open enrollment is coming up at my work so I am going to double check on their dental insurance and sign up if they cover ortho for adults. If all else fails we can always do a payment plan. I should have went to bed right away when I got home yesterday, but of course I didn’t. So I am very tired today. I’m glad we don’t have anything going on this afternoon so I can take a nap. Also, sweet baby V is 3 months old today! How is that possible??? She was just born!

Big work news. The partners have decided to phase out the office manager. She will be gone by the end of the year, which is also when we will be moving to the new building. They will be having myself and AR person take over the various aspects of her job. Starting Oct. 1st they will be increasing our hours to 30/wk and in the new year we will be back up to full time. So our office will just be 4 partners, 1 associate, and 3 staff. Crazy. I'm willing to try and see if the atmosphere gets better with such a small group. I'm also ready to start making my normal salary(if not more) again.
