Hello August!
How was everyone's weekend? We celebrated Haley's birthday on Saturday. The grandparents and my sister and nephew came over for cake. We did it all on our patio. I know Haley had fun and she liked ripping the wrapping paper. But I was missing some of our other family members who usually celebrate the kids birthdays with us.

I can’t believe it’s August. We also celebrated M’s birthday last weekend. She got a kick out of her new toys. She got a baby shark (the singing on) and she walks around talk about her ‘shock’. We call it her Jersey accent.
Tomorrow starts online learning for my oldest. She will do school online from home tomorrow and then she will do it at daycare. I want her to work through her technical issues tomorrow. We will see, at 6 years old, I have no clue how this will go.

I can't believe L turns 2 in 2 weeks! And my sister is due with her first in less than 3 weeks! Her due date is the same due date I had with L. Curious to see if L will end up sharing a birthday with his cousin.

Hi! The weather was gorgeous here over the weekend! We did a little hiking looking for fossils, ate at a restaurant for just the second time since March, went to a farmers market, and played at a park with one of DS1's classmates. The classmate's mom was DS1's first grade teacher. It was nice to talk to her about everything going on with the schools and how everyone is struggling with the decision on whether to send their child back or remote learn. At the time on Sunday, we were both leaning towards sending our kids back to school, but now I'm leaning towards remote learning. The decision is so difficult to make! I have a second grader, kindergartner, and preschooler (different school than the other two).

Things are pretty much just status quo here. We are working on getting J ready to start preschool in a couple of weeks. Z is doing good, but would be a lot better if his 2 year molars would just come through already.

DS turns 2 on Thursday. We're not doing much except cake (banana with cream cheese), but I think I will get him a balloon to play with.
We got his hair cut for the first time yesterday, and he looks so grown up, now! Also dentist and 2 yo check up this week - busy week!

The email just came through that we are going 100% virtual for school. I'm already worried about logistics.

Yesterday was my 6 year olds first day of school. She was on a zoom call from 8:15 to about 2:00. It was a little chaotic, but she did okay.
She was going to a different school last year and when the schools closed they had her watch videos and do worksheets and basically we parents were doing the teaching. It didn’t work out well. So that school was going to do the same thing this year while virtual and I knew I had to switch her.
So now she is on zoom all day trying to learn, they do their best to make it like they are in a classroom. We had some rough spots, but hopefully these next couple months will pass quickly and hopefully Arizonans get their stuff together so we can go back in person.

We had some rough spots, but hopefully these next couple months will pass quickly and hopefully Arizonans get their stuff together so we can go back in person. Our district has two options (1) 100% online with a teacher from the district but not necessarily the student's school (2) 100% in-person. My original thought was to send them to school so they'd have a teacher from their own school when classes were inevitably forced 100% online. Our governor has made it clear that she's going to do everything in her power to keep schools open. So now I'm thinking we start virtual and cross our fingers that we can send them back in-person after the first semester (in the middle of cold and flu season, ha!). It's difficult to know what either option is actually going to look like in practice. I hope your adjustment period is short!

How are parents that are essential with out the ability to work from home handling virtual learning for children? Our childcare provider has kids ranging in age from 7 or 8 years old to a few months old. All of the school aged kids are at different schools, in different grades. She said she's hiring help and will be starting preschool curriculum on her own, but I can't realistically expect her to handle virtual learning for all of these kids. I don't know what to do.
I absolutely understand the necessity of going to virtual learning and I'm not angry in the least, but I am so worried. If my family coming from a place privilege is struggling so much with this, how are families that don't have the resources coping? It's just a shitty situation for everyone and there really is no good answer.

Ugh, L was sent home from daycare with a fever, runny nose, and nasal congestion. Did a telehealth visit with his pediatrician and we have an appointment on Friday for him to get tested for COVID. Fingers crossed this is just a normal cold. Taking all the precautions just in case though. 😞

So DD1 can be at home doing remote. If she needs help with something, then it will probably have to wait until I get home.

kam3100 To me, that is a long time for her to be online. Is that a daily thing Yes, Tuesday through Friday. And Monday’s are half days. It’s a long time, but she’s handling it. For her, it’s more beneficial because she needs to be occupied. She does have some issues with focus, but it’s normal. The teacher knows that. The learning center that is keeping and eye and helping knows it too. We went from zero teacher interaction with parent lead learning to this online model and so far the online model is 1000% better (for us).

The learning center (daycare) my daughter is going to has a few helpers and they are helping the kids, even though all of the kids have quite a few different schedules. Today was day 3 for them and they are adjusting. It’s doable, but not ideal.

I know there's a lot of debate over what model of virtual learning is best for parents and students alike. I prefer the structure of more online time with teachers for us. My husband and I will both be working from home so we can't facilitate every learning activity. My kids are scheduled to be online off and on from 9-4. I need my kids online more than just an hour a day to check in with their teacher (some proposals for virtual learning are like this). I am not delusional. I know this is going to be difficult and my kids are going to need supervision throughout the day, but it's more manageable for us the more time they are tuned in to a teacher.

I told DS1 and DD that they'd be getting a chromebook and ipad, respectively, from the school. I was met with blank stares. "A what?" So, yeah, lots to learn here on the technology front. It'll be good for them.

Thanks all! He still had a fever this morning but it seems to have gone away now. Still has a lot of nasal congestion and a runny nose. Been a little more fussy today too.
Doc recommended waiting until Friday since his symptoms just started yesterday. If it’s covid, he said tests are more accurate around day 3 of symptoms.

We are keeping my 6 year old home today to do school because she keeps getting distracted at her daycare. She keeps logging off the computer and walking away and telling the teachers that she is done. (Lol)
She did the wrong school work yesterday.
I really hope Arizona get is crap together because I don’t think she is going to learn much with an online format.
I hope everyone has a happy weekend!

Covid test done! L was a champ and it was so much easier than I thought it would be. L seems to feel back to normal, so I am hopeful it was just a minor cold. Definitely still keeping him home and continuing to monitor, but glad he is feeling better!

L's covid test came back negative! So relieved and so glad his results came back quickly. His daycare sent out an email on Friday notifying parents that over half his class had been sent home sick last week, so I am glad we got him tested for the peace of mind. He is feeling 100% back to normal now.
