I changed my mind and decided I want to take 4 weeks off before the due date. Lol.
With DD I had to do twice weekly NSTs by that point so if anything I will be prepared for that. I really think it will be good for my mental health.

I'm going to take 12 weeks, will work up until my due date, but probably from home for the last week or two. I'll use about 10 days of 2016 vacation, 6 weeks paid, and then a little bit of 2017 vacation...probably end up about 2 weeks unpaid. Fortunately my boss is pretty relaxed about it and will let me stretch it out if I need to.

I met with HR today to talk about my options. Apparently, I can use my STD for 66% of my pay for 5 weeks and supplement with earned time to get to 100% pay then just use earned time for the rest of my leave. Or I can pull from my earned time for 40hrs a week and collect the 66% from STD for 5 weeks at the same time. My gut says option 2 is my best bet because that would be extra cash in the bank to help pay for daycare later, but I have to crunch the numbers.
Also, I confirmed that our time off for holidays/vacations doesn't count against my time. That's still free time off.

So, I did the math, and if I supplement STD with earned time, I can take about another 16 or 17 days off. If I take the STD as cash on top of my earned time, I'll bring home enough extra cash to cover daycare March-June.

I oversaved and underspent on my last maternity leave and had enough money leftover to pay a few months of daycare up front. It was SO nice to not have to worry about that for a while. Then we used a portion of our tax return to pay another big chunk. In paying several months out, it gave us time to save up so we wouldn't feel a pinch at all. The whole first year basically of daycare felt like a breeze since we were able to get ahead in the beginning.

roloma, that's what I'm hoping for! The STD money will basically cover daycare for the remainder of the school year, and then I won't have to pay again until the end of August. If we save our tax refund until then, we'll be in good shape.
