Hi chicken friends!
We put the pullets in with the big chickens yesterday. We’ve been doing it slowly over a few weekends. Their indoor pens are adjacent so they could hear and smell each other. Their outdoor runs have chicken wire between them so they can see each other. And they have spent a weekend or two in the outdoor run together, but going back to their own indoor pens at night.
From here on out, they are consolidated. Last night, we had to catch each chick and individually take them into the indoor adult pen (which we expected.) And this morning, mh had to lure them back out with mealworms.
How long should we expect to have to do this? They also just huddled together on the floor of the indoor pen and didn’t explore really. In the yard they seem to all huddle together under a shade structure and not explore.
They are probably 4 months now. They just need time to adjust right? They will be fine and learn the routine right?

Our chickens left Saturday. Both of my kids cried when I told them the day before but they were fine when they left. My yard feels real weird without them wandering around and I keep looking for them! My duck, Buzz Lightyear, that I suspect has some neurological issues is acting real weird again. She has these episodes that aren't quite seizures but something is definitely off. She stands and stares a lot, and likes to be held. But she eats, drinks, walks and swims so I really don't know.

They did it! Just 2 nights of putting the chicks in at bedtime, and I’ll be darned if those chicks weren’t already inside with the big chickens before bedtime! I’m so proud of my little chickies, all growed up!

Do spring chicks molt that same fall? Or are they not old enough and molt the following fall? I’ve been seeing all these things for helping chickens through their fall molt, but mine aren’t molting. Just curious.

My ducks started laying eggs again! Early this year, they usually take a break from about July-Dec. I don't think the younger ones have started laying yet though, just the older crew. So I might get away with only have to buy eggs once at the store, whew.

Also I don't think I ever updated about my special duck, Buzz Lightyear. She passed away the day after I put up the picture of her & M. My kids found her dead and floating in the pond and it was traumatic AF for poor M, she cried the rest of the day. It was absolutely awful.

The chickens can't wait for their new friend to come live with us in the pig house my husband totally didn't overbuild at all, because he wouldn't take "3 walls and a roof" for an answer. It matches their coop.

milano are you crying right now? I got teary a little bit when I was getting him up to coax him up the ramp but honestly I feel so happy and relieved that he is going to such a great family that there isn't any sadness. He's such a lucky pig and is going to love his new home!

Getting him back out of the van was quite a feat. He did NOT want to go down the ramp, and it had just gotten dark because someone was a little too chatty when we should have been leaving (okay, maybe that was all of us). He stopped to sample the grass several times on the way across the yard, but once he got in the house, he was quite happy to root around in the hay and get settled in. I'm hoping he adjusts okay and isn't too freaked out by all the change.

Do you put the chickens' food and water inside the coop? In the run?

Do you put the chickens' food and water inside the coop? In the run? We have the food and water in the coop. Right now, we also have a second waterer out in the covered part of the run. We will probably eliminate the outside water once the temperature drops to freezing though.

I went to check on Leonard when I let the chickens out. He was snuggled down, snoring. I said good morning and this face looked up at me.

Our “chicks” keep flying over the fence and getting into the back yard. They stay close and seem to want to get back into the chicken yard. So I’m not terribly worried. Except for, oh yeah, Shyla the bird dog. Is there a way to keep them from flying over the fence? Other than a new taller fence which won’t happen any time soon or going with survival of the fittest?
