I just bought an incubator. Because the answer to having too many eggs to hatch a bunch, right? You know then you'll have MORE chickens and MORE eggs, right?

My ducks are all finally in the new coop together tonight! Fingers crossed all goes well. I sat out there and watched them for quite awhile - there was some pecking by the babies (they are slightly bigger than the older ducks) but they settled down pretty quickly. They have been around each other for well over a month now, with fencing in between, so they "know" each other. But this is their first time all mixed.
And actually the one new duck is still isolated in the garage. So hopefully we can get her in there too soon, she seems to be improving so fingers crossed.

I thought I added this last night. They dont usually get that much food lol, J was "helping". We lined the floor with pond liner then set a tarp on top so we can easily pull it out and hose it off for cleaning/dumping the old straw.

Our incubator came yesterday. I gave it some time to make sure it would hold temperature and set 20 quail eggs last night. Should be interesting.
I finally stopped lurking and joined the backyard chicken forum and whoa are they active.

Yesterday morning my grandma noticed a red fox on her property, nosing around the chicken run. Thatβs great, but we built the run with predators in mind, so we were confident nothing was going to get in. DH decided to try to trap the fox anyway. Well, last evening when he went to set the trap we ended up having to do some emergency repairs to the run. My dad was doing some βyard workβ with the tractor and ended up getting the bucket stuck on part of the fence and tore up about a 5 foot section of the buried wire and made a hole in the lower part of the fence above ground as well. Absolutely no one has hardware cloth in stock around here! We luckily had a decent size piece that we repurposed from something else and repaired the run at 9:30 last night. Otherwise, we would have shut the girls in the coop and left them locked up until we were able to fix it. We still need to properly replace the piece of broken fence above ground but, it is secure for now.

We finally got our baby ducks into the pond! All the ducks have been together in the run and coop for the past several days and this morning we let them out. Should be fun herding them all back in later.

We've also moved our little chickens in with the big girls, but they're not convinced yet. It's quite an adventure getting them back in the coop in the evening. They had been going in and out already to eat from the feeder in there, so I thought they'd be okay spending the nights in there. Last night was only the third night and it was easier than the previous day, but well, I hope they figure it out on their own soon.
I'm waiting for some ceiling material to come from Amazon to repurpose the grow out pen into a larger quail hutch. Our eggs are on day 5. I have zero patience and would like them all to hatch right now. But it's still too early to even attempt to candle them, and quail eggs don't candle very well anyway.

Ok, friends, WWYD?
Our HOA language is very "gray area" regarding allowable pets. It's very plausible that chickens could be allowed, so long as they aren't used/bred for commercial purposes and aren't a nuisance to others. Also, any "dog run or pet enclosure" must be approved by the Design Review Committee before being installed. So, looks like we'll need to submit any plans for a chicken coop.
Would you specifically call it a chicken coop, or be a little more "gray" and call it a Small Pet Enclosure?

Depends on how strictly you think theyβll enforce it and if youβre willing to get rid of the chickens if someone complains. If it seems like youβll get away with it based on your experience with the HOA and neighbors, Iβd definitely go with a vague name. Maybe even call it a shed if it doesnβt have an enclosed run or identifiable henhouse attributes. Itβs often easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.

It's definitely going to look like a coop/hutch with a run. BUT, I know that 2 of our 3 direct neighbors are pro-chicken (one also would love some, and the couple behind us said they'd buy eggs from us π). I don't *think* our other next door neighbor would care. The HOA was just converted over to an owner-run BOD. I don't think the DRC has shifted yet. I wish I could make it more shed-like, but S doesn't want our big windows blocked, so it needs to stay smaller

Call it a domestic animal hutch? Or a pet hutch?
Outdoor pet enclosure and run?

Two more quail went off to freezer camp, there was no saving the injured one. She was going crazy alone, but getting picked on whenever I put her back. I took the opportunity to cull another one that had been going nutso. I should have done two more, but didn't really feel like it today. They all seem calm now with the crazies out of the hutch, no panicked hopping around, no pecking. I learned I need to let them rest in the fridge for a few days first this time.
The quail eggs are on day 6. This is the longest 17 days. Almost as long as that last week of pregnancy.

Friends. Last night my big ducks went right in their new coop on command and the baby ducks followed me in all the way from the other end of the pond. Tonight I went to put them away and the big ducks went in when I called them and the babies were already inside the coop waiting for me! I am elated. I actually was like tearing up and clapping. MH thinks I am totally nuts, but this is what I was hoping for! They are all such good little duckies, I love them so fucking much.

milano, I think your ducks and my chickens are on the same schedule. Last night, the littles went into the coop on their own, first. It was much easier to encourage the bigs to go in after them. I'm going to be in for a rude awakening in two months when it comes time to cull these new hatches (assuming they hatch). So far, I've only culled birds that were obviously no longer living their best life.

I just went out to collect eggs and opened the nesting box to find a chicken in it. I closed it right away and apologized. It felt like I'd walked in on another lady in the bathroom.

I know with small animals they have had success pouring sugar on prolapses. Shrinks the tissue back down enough that it can go back in. But hopefully you donβt have to deal with anything like that again. Poor lady.
