ladybrienne two things I find helpful- the majority of the cases are mild (like a cold or flu) and it seems to be very mild in children.

Can someone tell me things to ease my worry kthanks So far there have been no reported deaths of children ages 0-9. The people who are being impacted the most are the elderly. Eta: that sounds harsh and like I don't care about old people being impacted. I absolutely do, I have elderly parents and am worried about them. I just wanted to assuage your fears concerning your children.

I'm not a prepper in any sense of the word, but this is a good reminder for me to re-evaluate the food/water/medicine I have on hand for me and my family. I know I don't have enough to get through two weeks in case of a disruption to the supply chain or a requirement to stay in our homes. Time to start building that up, one shopping trip at a time.

Well. I just found out someone in my larger circle of colleagues has been out and about after visiting a family member diagnosed with COVID-19 (this person had returned from China). So. I retrieve my tinfoil hat.

I retrieve my tinfoil hat. I may have bought a preppers worth of shelf stable groceries tonight, so I'm right there with you. Eta - to not seem too crazy, it is all stuff we'd eat normally, just more of it. Quite a bit more of it. 🙈

Also, this is funny. I have a window open for the Portuguese newspaper I follow and it's a page on the "latest updates" on coronavirus.
In true Portuguese fashion, their up to the minute covering page "signed off" at midnight last night and has not got back on for the morning. 🤣 I know this because it has a timestamp at the top of the page and their last entry was basically see you tomorrow! ,I don't expect them back until 9 am for sure.

I retrieve my tinfoil hat. See this is a problem. We have actual plans for quarantining people with communicable diseases, and it’s managed through the health department. This is being wholly and slowly mismanaged.

Doesn't hurt to have extra nonperishables around the house. Even if supply lines aren't disrupted, it'll get eaten eventually and you never know what other emergency might pop up. Wednesday confession - H and I (with BIL) went to zombie survival camp a few years ago. It's basically post-disaster survival training with a zombie slant; we actually learned a lot of really valuable stuff but I have yet to put any of it in practice (like having a bug-out bag or extra supplies and water). I also learned I'm pretty good with a crossbow

Ok, it's truly scary that Trump is the executive during what's very probably going to be a pandemic (again, that doesn't mean everyone dies!). I am glad to see bipartisan push back to his requests so far (even Republicans saying, more money and you don't understand what's going on, Mr. Trump - from what I've read).
If I had a tinfoil hat, what I would be really concerned about is an intersection of a true pandemic and the general election. Yes, gathering in large groups isn't great when a new disease is going through the population. No, we cannot cancel an election but I'm hoping that all the people vital to the infrastructure of an election are actually healthy - as well as the voters.
That said, wonder what the under/over on cancelling the Olympics is, to be alarmist at this second.

ETA - I think I'm getting nervous about quarantining people on military bases (anyone's base!) Last thing I want to see is the military being widely exposed, but I don't see a way around it.

The only saving grace I see from the press conference tonight is that officials from the CDC and other orgs will be part of it, so hopefully they will do most of the talking. Wishful thinking, I know.

Is there any reason to think a pandemic will affect power supplies? Just wondering how in-depth my panic supplies should be.

Yesterday Kennedy (LA) went after the DHS sec for not being able to say how they would respond or even if we have enough face masks in this country.

Yesterday Kennedy (LA) went after the DHS sec for not being able to say how they would respond or even if we have enough face masks in this country. I'm a smidge worried about a knee-jerk response in the next week or so. My H is on a work trip overseas and I don't need him to be detained because air travel is cut back. I think that's pretty unlikely but I still am a little concerned.

You can definitely do freezer stuff to, we just have a tiny European freezer, so shelf stable is more useful to us. But yeah it'd have to get real bad for power disruptions because that would likely happen if there weren't enough people showing up to work. So again doubtful it will happen even with a pandemic.

Narrator she was not in fact confident, not one single smidge.

I think the thing to remember is that this is going to be a pandemic because it's going to spread like wildfire, precisely because it's most often not severe and people are walking around while asymptomatic. Does that mean that normal life will likely be altered at some point? Most likely because shutting down schools and in person workplaces will help to slow the spread. I don't anticipate it being a pandemic in the way we traditionally think of one, where the population is decimated and normal day to day life completely ceases forever.

The actual death rate doesn’t mean we are all going to die, but: 1. This doesn’t appear to be seasonal so the only way it goes away is if we properly contain (already missed that window).
2. This will be a big disruption to daily life.
3. The last pandemic was before globalization so we really don’t know how to handle this. Watch for how the at risk and marginalized are treated. We thought we had problems with jerks and borders before, I’m not optimistic that this shows humanity’s best side.
