C had been saying things lately like “I’m so ugly” “I hate my hair” “everybody hates me”. Today he told me how he hates his eyebrows because you can hardly see them.
The hair thing is because a friend said he was gross last week because he was super sweaty. The friend got in trouble by the teacher but obviously this stuck and he’s self conscious about sweating. He is a very sweaty kid when he plays hard, which is most of the time.
The everybody hates me comment first started after an argument with a couple of his buddies at school. From what I understand all is good but obviously disagreements happen. He just magnifies that to everyone hating him.
I’m not sure why he thinks he’s ugly. Tonight he told me he is the fattest in his class. Not true and we don’t talk about fat like that.
I am my own worst enemy and don’t want that for him. I told him some of my insecurities and that when I think of something I don’t like I think of two things I do. It’s hard to say it doesn’t matter what people think at this point, since really it does socially at this age.
Have your kids done this? How are you handling it?
It also doesn’t help that he has had this odd cough for 6 weeks that we can’t get rid of and he’s self conscious about that too. The Dr thinks it’s psychogenic since all other treatments failed. We are seeing a social worker next Friday.

H has said some things like that. I can’t remember specifically what she said about wearing glasses but the gist was that she doesn’t like them because her friends don’t have them and she thinks they make her look weird (or something. It was a few months ago). I reassured her that she looks very cute with her glasses on and that yes, some of her friends do wear glasses. I think it’s one of those things you kind of have to just tread lightly and follow their cues.

Cadence's mostly in the "I can't" phase. She won't even try some things because she "can't". She also talks about how good soandso are at different things, followed by how she's not. For that, I just say you won't know how good you are at something if you don't try. And that everyone is good at different things, just like everyone looks different.
She went through a couple weeks of her saying she was "weird" or a "weirdo". I was not a fan of that. Idk if someone at school was calling her that or what, but I would just reply with no, you aren't, and she finally stopped saying it.
