So i will answer the preschool question first. We are plannong to do 1 day preschool starting in February 9 to 12. If he likes it we can do 2 days a week starting in April. As a public school teacher i dont think kids really need preschool before age 4 and we would onlybe doing it because it was recommended to help with speech. Next year he will be inthe 3s class and cam go 2 or 3 days but we will probably do just 2. My concern willbe what to do at 4. He wilk be eligible for public preschool but will be the youngestin his class (cut off sept. 1) so we may wait a year...we will see.

As for the speech eval i couldnt stop crying after dh called me. The lady was a jerk. The first thing she said was i dont really work with kids under 4 because they cant do flash cards. She then said even id he does qualify with the holidays she wouldnt start him until february. She then assessed him and said he does have an expressive delay but not a receptive one. Dh agreed. She said that evens out so he really doesnt need speech. Dh was livid. Before walking out he let her in on the fact that we are both special ed teachers and the 2 dont cancell each other out and if he qualifies in one he qualifies. All of a sudden she had an opening for him at 11 on fridays. Thanks but no thanks. You dont want to work with my kid, you lied, and now you got caught and backtracked. Im still so pissed off.

Oh the reason i cried is everything i read and have learned and freaking tell parents is get early intervention. Here we are desperately trying too and cant. Im so frustrated but there are only 2 places in our county that service toddlers. Infants and toddlers, and the place we went yesterday. I called infants and toddlers last night to reopen our referral. My guess is since they all work with me we will get the help we need this time. He had a 21% delay in september and needed 25% so i think we are there now. He is saying words and repeating us, but he doesnt have what he should by now.

I’m sorry king26 that is so frustrating. I’m glad your DH told that lady off. What BS. I hope you get in and can start services ASAP.

king26 That lady sounds terrible. I hope Infants & Toddlers will work with you. My DS had an expressive delay at that age and we worked with I&T for about 18 months before he was caught up. I don’t blame you for crying- it’s frustrating to want to help your child and have people not be helpful.

T went to preschool at the YMCA Tuesday’s/Thursday’s from 9-12pm. I keep trying to figure out how I can work it so R can go. They swim for a half hour and it’s such an amazing program. I’m thinking about seeing if I can get her in 5 days a week, then maybe I could have her in daycare from 12:30-4:30pm. I figure next time I see the teacher at the Y, I’ll ask if three year olds can go five days. If they can, then I’ll need to see if I can find someone to watch her in the afternoons for like $150 a week. The biggest issue will be taking time off to transport her every day and still have time to take off for school holidays.
We will do pre-k when she is 4 for sure and the summer before I’ll put her in the YMCA camp June through August, because it is cheaper than daycare per week and they swim.

king26 what a bitch! That woman sounds horrible, I know speech therapists who do early intervention with kids as young as 18 months so she sucks. Just out of curiosity, why do you think preschool isn't needed before 4? I am freaking out about this since our kids are in in home daycare and I didn't want them to fall behind.

As a teacher I dont think preschool is needed before 4. I would say about half of our children come into preschool without any schooling prior to preschool. We have found that at the end of the year those that came in with schooling and those that dont are at similiar places. However, kids that dont go to school until kindergarten tend to be behind their peers. Preschool isnt mandatort in our state so starting in kindergarten is perfectly acceptable but we find those that go to preschool have a better foundation. Like i said though, often those that come into preschool at 4 withno experience have caught up to those with schooling by the end of preschool.

So yesterday was an absolute cluster. I ended up taking them both to walk in hours since the coughs were amping up and M just getting off the antibiotics. She had a horrible night and her breathing seemed off so I was panicked. They could only get oxygen readings of like 94 when we got there, she was belly breathing and neck retracting but seemed in fine spirits. No temp. So they did a neb treatment and steroid and got it back to 97. They listened and said while she didn't hear crackling, noticed some decreased lung function so diagnosed as reoccured pneumonia, ugh. We were sent home with instructions for neb every 4 hours around the clock and a new antibiotic. D1 checked out fine. We were also told if the breathing stuff started prior to the 4 hour mark after the neb, go to the ER. So of course it started 3 hours later at home and she looked so pale that i panicked. I called the office and they said go to the ER. We get there and of course she is looking better and better! Triage nurse says her lungs sound relatively clear and oxygen readings up to 97, HUH? So we see the ER dr who says "what do you mean diagnosed with pneumonia after only coughing 2 days and no fever"? I'm explaining how she looked terrible this morning and just coming off pneumonia recently. So she says she wouldn't give her the antibiotic, does not think its that and is likely just a bronchial type of virus. She says they can do a chest Xray to confirm but we don't have to. I didn't feel right leaving there without getting the Xray and just taking her off the meds. So you know where this is heading right? Chest xray is negative for pneumonia and shows some inflammation in the airways which could be caused by virus. WTF?! So we leave there with instructions to not take the antibiotics and continue neb as needed.
We saw a NP yesterday who i have always liked at her pedi's office instead of her regular dr but I'm annoyed she misdiagnosed but also realize my kid looked much different that morning. I know I have to call the office and update them but I hate confrontation, lol. I won't be a bitch but they need to know.
One good thing out of all this is at least we had the Xray and I don't have to medicate her for no reason and the NP did set both my kids up with appointments to see a pulmonologist which I have been leaning towards wanting to do for awhile to rule out anything underlying like asthma since they seem to get such horrible cough and respiratory stuff with illness.
Sorry for the novel, woof kids man!

Oh my gosh jt2378 what a day/night. I’m sorry that she’s been so sick. I’m glad you got the CXR, I would have, too. At least it got figured out the official diagnosis now but still ugh. How frightening. My parents are here and N is in heaven with them and with sleeping in our bed full time since they’re sleeping on the futon in his room. My mom said she is astonished at how much energy he has and that he’s basically a tornado of a kid. Yep, mom. She’s like idk how you guys survive. I’m like yep. 😑 lol

So I ended up calling infanrs and toddlets again. The girl said she would get back to me. She called thursday. Her supervisor ( whom ive taught with) reopened Js referraland they decided I know what Im talking about and if i think he is struggling and he was so close 3 months ago they are meeting withme jan. 2nd,will do a parent interview, and we will write the IFSP. i say we because the woman basically told me I can help to write it since thats what I do. Speech services will start second week of january. Thank goodness i kept on it.
