I'm home and my AC is fixed! K has handled the transition sleeping at home again better than I expected. I haven't gotten official word yet, but when I log on to the applicant portal for the graduate library program I applied for, it calls me a student and says I was accepted, so I'm happy about that!
I should hear this week if my enrichment summer program filled for the first week (next week). I'm kind of hoping it didn't. It sounded good in the spring and any extra money is helpful, but I'm not looking forward to going to work during my vacation.

We are at the cabin. I'm trying really hard to change my mindset to do anything other than just sit here. I feel like I'm stuck in quicksand or something. Slowly drowning and powerless to stop it. Usually I can check out when I'm up here but it hasn't happened yet.

DH's super full weeks are almost over. Our babysitter sent me a message on WhatsApp today linking to a NYT article and said it was complicated - could I translate it for her by tomorrow evening and she would babysit for us to pay for the translation? I thought that was a very nice idea on her part and then looked at the article. If I were doing it professionally, I would charge almost $ 400 for it - that's a heck of a lot of babysitting!!! I actually calculated that at her rates, it would be about 30 hours of babysitting. Obviously I'm not going to hold her to that. The other problem is that it would be a full day's work. So I agreed with her that I'll just see how much I can get done by tomorrow night. She's got a big oral exam coming up and part of it is on this article, which focuses on NY city's homelessness problem.

I just got caught up on last week's thread. Haven't read this one yet. We had an insane weekend. Friday we packed up and drive 2.5 hours to a campground. Got everything set up, and just chilled there for awhile. M very quickly got the idea about the fire, she'd stop a few feet away from it and yell "hot" at it, like she was mad. Bedtime was a disaster. We tried to put M to bed on her own and she flipped, so I went and cuddled with her, but she still wouldn't chill, so H and S came to bed, thinking that she might go down if she thought everyone was. We eventually figured out that she didn't like the air mattresses, so we moved hers and let her sleep on the floor pad, but she still didn't sleep well and kept climbing all over H.
We spent Saturday morning at the dinosaur museum and did the interpretive hike. Then we drove around for awhile to let the kids sleep and stopped for lunch. Then we went back into town and went to a farmers market (where M decided to lose her hat), the spray park, and for ice cream. Then we started heading back to the campsite for dinner, and a storm rolled in. So our options were a mad dash to pack up and leave, or spend the evening in a tent with active, grumpy kids. We opted to flee. And got everything jammed into the van about 5 minutes after the storm started. We stopped at Wendy's at the halfway point in our drive at like 9:30 at night, and finally rolled in at about 11:30.
Sunday H let me sleep in and unloaded the van by himself. And then once everyone was awake he gave the kids baths without me too. Then I dropped him off at a party on the North end of the city, took the kids to his parents house (about half an hour south of the city), went home and got ready, and then went to meet him back at the party. He had to work today, so I got up early and went to get the kids, and decided we should hang out with my parents for awhile.
I'm beat. And now I'm off to read the thread.

K has been hitting her head with things when she's frustrated. Her toy phone when it doesn't work, a book she wants us to read to her, etc. There's easier ways, kid.

I'm starting to feel the drinks I had last night. I was ok until about an hour ago and then I started getting a headache. I think I'm going to convince H we should order pizza so I don't have to cook. He'll probably go for it, he's more tired than I am. S is currently wandering around outside looking for friends to play with. I don't think anyone is home though.

Hi! We just got back from a vacation - we were also in the mountains in Colorado. We went up there for a wedding and had such a good time. We went on a few short hikes and - whew - the elevation really got to me the first day. I don't remember that happening when I was younger.
We were the only ones of our friends who brought our baby to the wedding and when I found that out I thought we'd made a big mistake, but (I'm going to brag a little) he was basically perfect. He ran around during the cocktail hour charming people and having fun, and then he fell asleep in the stroller right after dinner and slept from about 8 to midnight. We just parked him in the corner and we got to dance and have tons of fun. He even made a brief (sleeping) appearance at the after party. I was so impressed.
He never quite got on mountain time for his wake ups, though, so we could all use a little more sleep tonight.

Happy 4th (US) ladies!
DD slept better in her pack n play last night but was up super early. 4:15am. She nursed in our bed for awhile so I could doze and we finally got up at 5:15. I might load her up in the stroller and take the dog for a walk. We don't really have plans for today since it is kinda crazy packed up here with all of the people from Phoenix up here escaping the heat. We might just hide out in the cabin.
Question: Do any of you plan to take your little ones to fireworks? I'll admit that DS has never even been (and he's 6!). I hate crowds and they always start so late that when he was younger it wasn't worth it to me to end up with a crap night of sleepq. I'm definitely not taking DD this year either. But I do think H and DS might go check some out at the ski resort tonight. He saw fireworks from our hotel room when we went to Disneyland the first time but that's pretty much it. I think he'll love it.

scorpioscuba - I'm with you on the crowds and starting too late thing for watching fireworks. I would love for the dds to see them - Dd1 is super interested - but we will probably wait a few years. My H and I both hate crowds/camping out waiting for stuff/heat/etc so i hope we can figure out a plan for making it a fun day before we get to that point. I think H is going to take Dd1 to a fireworks stand this morning. Hopefully they will find some kind of little fountain-style one (that doesn't make noise!) and we can light that out in the street for her before bed tonight. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

No on fireworks. We went to the parade in our town this morning and that's enough of that. Our dog is terrified of fireworks (though maybe his old age induced hearing loss will help us this year?) so we always stay home with him. Plus, too late and too hot. They are actually banned in our area, but I'm sure our hillbilly neighbors will shoot them off in the street in front of our house like last year. It woke up K and I'm still salty about it.

Our immediate neighbors don't seem like the crazy fireworks type, but a few houses down I'm not so sure.... I actually really hate firework other than the big municipal display type, I wish they were banned here. Lots are illegal - Roman candles, bottle rockets, fire crackers, etc - but people drive out to the reservations and buy them anyway. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

We take S to the fireworks almost every year. Starting just before he turned 1. He loves them. M hasn't been to them yet, because last year they were on a plane, and this year we were just getting home. The fair has fireworks every night that they're here, so they'll probably see those. I don't mind the crowds at out city displays, because it's usually pretty spread out. Getting there and back can be a pain though, parking is either super expensive or impossible to find for the most part, and trying to get out to go home can take forever. We sometimes get around it by taking public transit.

The summer enrichment course I proposed filled for the first week. That means I have to teach it. I'm trying to get excited about the extra money for not much work. It feels like the beginning of the end of my summer.
We need money. AC repair. Super expensive daycare. Paying down debt. The money will help. The money will help.
Getting there.

Mom fail. M had a vaccine appointment this morning, and I completely forgot. They just called and rescheduled for later this afternoon. I've been doing really well with writing things down, so I'm frustrated with myself. I made the appointment 6 months ago.

Has anyone watched Riverdale on Netflix? I have my WTF face on. I loved the Archie comics when I was younger. This show is a travesty. I get modernizing it, but this is nuts.

Last year we took LO to watch the city fireworks display from the balcony of an office building. He seemed to watch for awhile then fell asleep. Haha. This year our town's fireworks display is put on at the mall? Apparently people sit and watch it from the parking lot? We didn't go. copperboom, it's all about the $$$. I hope it's not too much work. lollipop, I have to put appointments in my calendar as I'm making them, otherwise I would definitely forget. I'm glad they got you in this afternoon.

I'm the neighbor who calls the non emergency line to report neighbors firing off huge fireworks in my street. It's been going on all night. I just happened to be awake and looking out my window as the fire Marshall pulled up and caught them. Sorrynotsorry

We have lived in our house for 13 years. There are always people setting off fireworks, and we have been told that this neighborhood is considered to set off some of the best "home" shows. Of course when we first moved in we didn't have kids or even dogs that were scared. Then we got a dog that was terrified and needed to be held. I became a grouchy firework person then. I think that first year I called the non emergency line a few times. Of course they drove by and that was all. Most years as long as the fireworks didn't leave the ground they were ok. So fountains and such were fine. I've just come to know that it won't change and to just deal with them. This year they got a ton worse. They started a week and half early and at 9pm every single night. Luckily my kids slept through them. Since Saturday they have started around 630pm and have continued well past 1130. Our current dog is ok as long as she can be near us. And the kids did great sleeping through all the fireworks. As far as big firework displays, they shoot some off at the Rodeo and we can see them from my parents front yard. So we watch those every year.

I walked across the street just before midnight and asked if they could stop soon because it was waking up k. I pointed out her window right across from where they were shooting off huge screaming rockets. They said they were almost done. They kept going a few more times and set off one right as the fire Marshall pulled up. See? I told you you should stop.
