Katie Hill was just talking to Anderson. she was look how calm they are walking out of the school, this is what we've done to our kids. Isn't that heartbreaking? I just can't any more.
We have traumatized entire generations of kids.

Sending love to you and yours miawallace I can't believe this is real life anymore. How are we not doing better for our own children yet!? This makes me so sad and angry. Our poor kids. School should be safe. It's supposed to be a safe space for our kids. Fuck everyone who refused to pass gun legislation. Fuck every single one of them. They owe me fucking hazard pay too at this point, as far as I'm concerned. I shouldn't fear sending my kids to school and I shouldn't worry every day that I walk through the door to work that my life is on the line. FUCK. I'M SO ANGRY.

It’s so sad. Also I just heard one of the students, a female, just died. My local anchor had a hard time announcing that.

I'm seeing the shooter is in custody, one student dead, lockdown lifted. And what a tragedy that we all know the drill by now.

I need to stay off the internet today. So far I've seen 'why isnt 'local station in Idaho' broadcasting this live' and 'we need metal detectors in schools and doors that only open for students' and our old favorite. 'guns aren't the problem'
I want to smack everyone.

I don’t get why this is so hard to understand.

'guns aren't the problem' I want to smack everyone. I mean, fuck. Our school doors are locked up tight. We drop our kids off at the door and they have to be buzzed in. But hey, we're the only nation with this issue and maybe (definitely) it's because we have some of the laxist gun laws in the world.

In other news, we're being audited by the state to see if our kids really do deserve free lunch at schools. Because they want to make sure no one is taking advantage. As if we didn't already give them all of our income stuff at the beginning of the year. Can't we just fucking feed kids and not badger their parents? We know we probably won't qualify next year becuase H will hit his 2 years and get a big raise. We just needed to get through the two lean years first.
It's so frustrating. I also got the paper work today and was told it was due tomorrow or they'd stop giving my kid her lunches. Like WTF?

We can fund a 20 year war but oh lets not let those freeloading children have a balanced meal while trying to LEARN.

To be clear, I was in a fairly safe location. But still...YEMEN.

And my response is I'd do whatever it took the keep them safe, regardless of what that means for me, because that's my fucking job now.

And my response is I'd do whatever it took the keep them safe, regardless of what that means for me, because that's my fucking job now. Our resource officer was talking with staff about this, and what we should do if someone comes in their rooms. Basically she told the teacher: you should realize that fighting back instead of running/hiding could lose you some of your students but it is better than losing the entire room. It was not phrased well...and it was just so cold that this is reality. And she wasn't intending to be cold, it was just matter of fact, this is how it is now. I buzz students in every day through doors that are not bulletproof. I always think about what if I buzz someone through who ends up shooting people in the school. A student could just walk in and go to the bathroom and pull a gun out of their backpack. And then I feel like it would be on me, that I didn't notice the signs when I buzzed him in. And I'm mad at that burden being placed on me, because instead of DOING SOMETHING about it, they just put in shitty security measures to put on the appearance of keeping people safe. Or I am highly likely to be one of the first people shot if they start shooting immediately. And I hope that doesn't sound selfish, because i feel like that's a lot of ME talk. It's just one part of what would happen if it happened where I work.

4PrivetDrive It's not selfish, though. It's human. And it's not fair that teachers and school employees are having this burden placed on them.

We do drills at work (in the public library). We're told to run/hide/fight. The person in charge keeps emphasizing how useful a giant book will be when thrown at someone with a gun. Otherwise they have us running around the stacks like we're doing war games like we're paramilitary, until we get to an exit door or door we can lock behind us.
It's a bunch of garbage.

I'm so sorry, miawallace. That's terrifying when it's personal and close. Hugs to everyone. It's truly terrible that we have a nation of traumatized children, parents, teachers, and faculty. And the Senate does...nothing. I yearn for the karma that is due for McConnell and Republicans.

You're not selfish. As much as I would do anything I had to in order to protect my room full of children, at the end of the day I want to go home to my own kids. I don't think that's selfish and I wish the GOP would understand. It's such a rock and a hard place when it doesn't have to be.

The odd thing is that most of these school shootings happen in affluent communities. You’d think these politicians would be more willing to make changes since their kids seem to be the ones more likely to be targets.
My husband and I were talking and he was just saying that his high school - Saugus- had almost zero diversity. It was mostly white. His block had zero brown and black folks in it. He met his first Latino while working. Yeaaah. I don’t know man. I don’t see these issues in poor schools. We have our own issues, of course, but these school shootings are not something seen there. Or am I wrong? Just observations.

It's evolved and covers a lot of school violence including school shootings. It's really opened my eyes to how much this seems to be a suburban school issue. I felt a lot safer when I worked in the inner city. My suburban school feels just less secure, more vulnerable, more something. I can't put my finger on it. But yeah, these shootings are mostly happening in less diverse, suburban area schools.

cnf, 4PrivetDrive, and all other school/library personnel Its not selfish. This is NOT how we are supposed to raise kids. It should never be your job to literally put your life ahead of your students because we as a society value a weapon over common sense. Metal detectors, buzzing in, bulletproof glass/doors, lockdowns, etc. Those are for JAILS. We shouldn't be raising, teaching and expecting children to learn if they are damn near incarcerated. I'm so sorry this has become our reality HUGS
