Can I ask a parenting question? I have an almost 7 year old boy. He’s pretty obsessed with guns and military stuff. MH and I are extreme anti gun. Like MH thinks all guns should be illegal (he knows that’s not practical but that’s how he feels). So we’ve never allowed any toy guns. Of course, my son improvises with other toys and we have some rules around that like not pointing them at pets or people. Anywho, he is begging for a nerf gun for Xmas. Like he’s definitely going to ask Santa for one. I know I’m extra about this but I don’t want to get it for him. I don’t want to play guns, etc. Almost all of his peers have them. I need to just unclench, huh?
What are your general rules around toy guns, nerf guns, etc and what ages are appropriate?
I just feel like I can’t even be rationale about it because of my fears so I need some practical advice.

ALEXANDER SKARSGARD IS IN THIS MOVIE. I HAD NO IDEA. I’m living vicariously through you. He's the good-looking Canadian PM. Lol. Overall this movie is pretty entertaining so far.

Cspan has footage running called House Intel Cmte STAKEOUT yeah they always do that during closed hearings. A bunch of reporters mill around outside the SCIF waiting for someone to come out and tell them something. I've wandered down there before and seen some of my favorite reporters playing Angry Birds.

jaygee,we have a hard and fast no toy guns of any kind rule. The way we explain it is that guns are dangerous, they can hurt and kill people, and that is not something to pretend about or to play at. I'm aware that a lot of people find this extra, but it's how I feel.

Someone actually gifted us one and I threw it out when we moved. I've considered letting him have one for his birthday and using it only for target practice, never at people. I have the excuse of having two littler ones so that helps. I know it is a big thing for that age though.

If that is how you and YH strongly feel, then you shouldn't feel the need to back down just because "other people" are doing it. It is your family and your rules. I'm guessing your son already knows your family's stance. If so, then I'd just tell him that Santa knows the rules of the families he brings toys to, and won't bring something that isn't allowed, or something to that effect.

My 5'9" 14 y.o. has an amazing plague doctor costume he will be wearing as he runs around our neighborhood TOT with his friends. He LOVES this night, and it kills me that people think he should quit because he's over some arbitrary age.
What was "I" doing on Halloween night when I was 14 and "too old for TOT" in my small, midwestern town? I still wanted to run around with my friends, but we were egging each other and teachers' houses instead. Yes, I was a shit.
Let kids be kids, FFS. They have the rest of their damned lives to be adults.

I was done ToT by 12 but my parents would let me stay home alone and hand out the candy while they took my little sister ToT. I thought I was so cool and grown up.

that said Nerf is different somehow, it falls into the same category as a waterblaster which looks more 'gun like' to me. Camille has a nerf bow. Same rules apply, no aiming or shooting at 2 or 4 legged beings.
There is no easy answer, except your house your rules.

jaygee we don't allow any toy guns in our house either. My son is younger, he just turned 4. My h was in the Army before we got married and he very much feels that guns should never be toys. We don't own any guns personally but h still goes to the range with friends and would like to take ds when he's (much) older. So we're drilling gun safety rules into his head now, including that they are never toys, they are dangerous.

jaygee, We have a hard no-toy-guns rule in our house. I have actually returned some Nerf guns that were bought for my kids. We explain it that guns are very serious and they are not toys.

I was just going to say, Nerf makes some bow and arrow type toys that don't look like guns but may give him the satisfaction of a nerf dart flying across the room without you feeling like you have to violate your personal belief jaygee. They also have a Spiderman web blaster and an Iron Man gauntlet that are not particularly gun-like if he's into superheroes (and assuming that is a better option for you). I feel your pain regarding peers. The kids at Kinder have taught my oldest to play superhero and bad guy and I've caught him saying "and then I kill you because you're a bad guy!" and I have to keep explaining why that's not ok and we don't play like that. IDK these parents teaching their kids to play killing each other but it is deeply upsetting.

jaygee I don't know what we'll do about Need guns because it hasn't come up. I don't even allow water guns, though, so I'm very strict plane. Same here. We have gotten a couple water guns as gifts and I call them water squirters and quickly disappear them. 'Guns are never toys' seems like the easiest way to explain to my kids why we don't have any.

We have the same rules that they can't point them at pets or people, and if they don't listen they go away. ETA they know guns are dangerous and are not toys. Their dad is a police officer and my SO hunts, so we have had many discussions on gun safety.

One more step backward.

I grew up next to Chesapeake. It is just suburban sprawl and semi-rural areas. It has always been the asscrack of the "7 cities". But also note Virginia Beach still has signs up last I checked for no cursing in public. That whole cul de sac of Virginia sucks. There is a whole thing going on in my city over a "journalist" refusing to identify to a cop. Cop actually arrested this guy because he said (to another civilian with whom he was arguing) "You're a fucking fool", stating that swearing in public is a municipal violation. Needless to say heads are rolling over here.
