Hi! Busy long weekend here; we had so much fun with my sister and nephew. Perfect mix of activity and relaxing. We took the kids out to a farm that has animals, hayrides, etc on Saturday and it was the cutest. However! Having a little one in the house again has confirmed that we are definitely good with 2 kids, lol. I don’t think C was meant to be a middle child 😂 Now I’m back from the airport and helping B with an assignment (today is a Virtual Learning /teacher planning day, so no school). Will you tell me more about how they structure the virtual leaning? This is only our first assignment, but we were asked for the kids to draw a pic, tell a story on video, or similar of how they can show good citizenship at home (this goes along with their citizenship curriculum in class). Then we upload the drawing or recording to an online platform we utilize called Seesaw. That’s how I see some of his class work with the teacher’s comments (or recordings of him describing a drawing, reciting a poem/rhyme they’ve learned, etc) |

We are reading aloud to B, he has some sight words but is not reading independently. jewels My B really enjoys non-fiction. Titanic, Pompeii, weather/natural disasters like earthquakes (lol, sign us up for mass-scale death and destruction 😬😳), outer space and even history. We have really liked books in these series:   Ohh these are great, thank you! |

C really loves reading books that are all about snakes and spiders. Ew. Have y'all read Kipling's Rikki Tikki Tavi (about the mongoose and cobras)? B loves that one. There are a couple good illustrated versions. I remember watching the cartoon as a kid. |

M can read simple sentences - I like my house. - for example. I still read a lot of books out loud. He’ll try to sound some words out and blindly guesses at others. He’s improving though.
He brings home a variety books from the library. No clear favorites.

J reads Bob level 2 books, but we haven't picked up too many books from the library for him to actually read yet. Need to get on that. He has brought home books from the library but we keep forgetting to read them🤦.
Just getting home and both girls are snoozing. I drove by my dad's house one last time since they settle tomorrow, but didn't pull in since there were cars there and didn't want to stress anyone out with an unannounced visit. I brought back a ton of kids clothes from my mom's house to sort/donate..this will be a project to say the least.

Our K teacher said at open house that learning to read is done in first grade and isn’t a developmentally appropriate milestone in K (not that it’s bad but showing that it is t a good expectation to have at this point). That made me feel better since C isn’t reading yet. We are working on sight words now and working on writing a few lower case letters he still does backwards.
He doesn’t care much for fiction so I’ll have to look into some of these suggestions.

Cadence always brings home nonfiction from the school library. Mostly about puppies and kittens.

He doesn’t care much for fiction so I’ll have to look into some of these suggestions. That sounds right. I think now they focus on letter identification, phonics, sight words, and types of words (noun) . Putting it all together is a bonus. |

They split the 3 K classes by reading level. He goes to the advanced. At his preK they stressed knowing this list of 40 sight words. Some kids don't know the alphabet though so there is a huge range. We are reading the kindergarten- grade 1 books (the number varies by publisher). I read a page, he reads a page. Something has clicked over the past few weeks and he's reading and doing math like a wiz (for a kindergartener).
The is a series of chapter books called acorn series (?). The acorn is good for early reader and the tree for the next level. But good stories

jewels We arent doing any series yet, I dont think it would hold his interest, his attention span is that of Dory from Finding Nemo....he really like the National geographic books, 'big books of Why' and dinosaurs, the 5 Minute stories of Marvel and of course Star Wars. Last week he came home BEGGING for the new 'Dog Man' books (he even grabbed the tea towel to dry the dishes after dinner one night so we could go before bath/bedtime) some of his older friends in OSC have them, they're a comic book type, but he can read them on his own. Apparently it is the creator of the Captain underpants?..I mean , i have no idea. Within the books it teaches them how to draw the characters as well, so he is currently making his own comic book, complete with a story line, captions, pictures and he is using his imagination to think of the next part of the story, which doesnt come naturally to him.

re: reading. B is reading on his own and has been since the beginning of the calendar year, there was a lot of emphasis on it in kinder. There are sight words that he does every day, he reads books he gets from the library, his teacher and at home he reads his comics and does the Pete the Cat books, and ones like it, on his own for a total of about 15-20 minutes per day.
Learning is his wheelhouse, it is how I keep him focused most times and what drives him. He has math books that have simple addition and subtraction and that's what I take to restaurants to keep him entertained. He likes to finish something, the end of a book or get the answer right on a math question.

In school they have been teaching how to put a story together and S comes home fascinated with the details (he was amazed that you have to think up the whole story first!). |

They didn't even work on reading other than some sight words and phonics basics in K. With Cass I still read picture books to her. |

Oh to be a dude and have no guilt nagging at you while sitting on your butt all day. |

The other day he opened an Amazon package and left the Box open on the table, all the packing material, the scissors were laying open- not even closed and all the wrapping from the item itself. He tore into it took out what he wanted and left the mess for me. I was so frustrated. |

Funny you should mention Dogman vino. C came home tonight with one and was raving about it. I’ve actually read most of the Dogman books because that was what the kid I read with wanted to read when I was doing the reading program. C was very impressed I knew so much. I also just signed up for Sports Illustrated Kids for one of his Christmas gifts. Not a book but a good gift idea for other sport loving kids. |
